Hello fellas. I apologize in advance if something like this has already been discussed as i searched the forums for threads like this. Since joining i familiarized myself with the use of marine traffic watching all the vessel traffic in Vancouver and the coast of BC. Marine traffic can track the tugs, ships, ferries (of course), and others but i am not able to track those smaller fishing vessels that are around. I want to be able to track some of my friend's fishing vessels as well as my dad's packer boat that's now out in Bella Coola that are doing the salmon season this summer. Any of you guys know how i can be able to track those fishing vessels? Any tips or help would be appreciated!

It could very well be that the vessels you mentioned are not traceable using AIS. I would suggest you check out siitech.com lite VTS as an alternative to Marine Traffic. It is also AIS-based, but sometimes picks up ships that Marine Traffic does not. Hope this helps.

Yes, Michael (Mileage Photo) is correct in that much of the coast of BC does not yet have coverage on Siitech or Marine Traffic. This would almost certainly be true for the inlets at & around Bella Coola. The coverage is expanding, however. I note that where I live (Kitimat - Douglas Channel) has only just received coverage. I am also uncertain if all smaller commercial vessels such as commercial fish boats are required to have AIS transmitters. If they don't have one (or do, but its not operating) then there is no prospect of being able to track them. Another way to monitor your father's location would be for him to use a Spot Beacon or similar type of device. They are not hugely expensive and do provide some peace of mind for the folks 'back home'.
