Some time ago a lot of members were wanting the poster 0f the BC ferries fleet review ( All the ships togeather at anchor) Sorry I can't included an image because the pro board pubas have determinded that all images must be downloaded from an external server rather than my own computer. Anyway, those of you who are familiar with the story will recall a lot of interest in those posters. However what most don't know, there were 500 limited edition prints made along with some special re-marked prints (a remarked print is one that has the artists personal drawings in the white border. In this case, I've heard that the artist did highly detailed pencil drawings in the bottom right hand corner in the white space on the print of only one of the ships in the painting, thus there are only 42 remarked prints ever published. Those prints are valuable not to say that remaing prints aren't but the remarks are at least 20 to 50 times more valuable because there are only 42 of them and each one of those is the only one. The original painting he told me was 8 feet by 4 feet painted on 3/4 or 1 inch preped masonite, a special easel was built to hold the weight and size of the canvas. Tom said the geomtric layout took 3 months and the actual painting only a month. Amazing.
So the painting was painted, and 500* limited edition prints were printed and untold posters were created for sale in the ship's gift shops. All went well. Tom was embarassed when asked to sign a poster but said he loved to do so. You see he was a bc ferry deckhand who happed to be a great artist and an astute salesman.
He sold it to the CEO, his secretary and the second in charge. They took the proposition to the board. The board saw the prliminary layout and all approved the cost. Now Here is the mystery of the million dollar painting. Initaily, the contract staided 25k for the painting, 5k for 500 limited edition prints, no mention the remarked prints (the real vauable ones) and an unlimited amount or posters that you've all seen. But there was an election coming up and for some reason the then CEO wanted the painting done sooner. Tom told me the CEO and his second in charge came to his studio to check on the progress and were not impressed. Tom told them he also had a job to work too and he couldn't paint 24/7. They sweeten'd the pot substantially, took him off of work to paint full time. "You are painting the Million Dollor painting" the second in command said as walked out.
Tom told me all of this and more at crew barbaque at least 10 years after the painting was done. He'd wondered why the next in commmand had said he was painting a millon dollar painting.
But, in Canadian Tax law, Catagory C, Capital cost allowance, there allows substaintial deductions for purchasing original art from living Canadian artists. As long as the art pertains to your business and you display it in your place of business, it does not matter the cost. Thus the Million dorrlor painting.
So, if you'd seen the many interves with David Hann you would have seen that painting behind him, in the board room at BC ferries. Now that he is gone and a new group has taken over and the head office has moved from Fort street to their new location and the painting has dissappeared.
This painting is part of the BC culture, it is owned by the people of BC, it should be in the Maritime Musium, where is it? IT IS INDEED A MILLION PAINTING SO WHERE IS IT?
*I have in my possesion most of the low numberd prints plus quite a few of the remarks that I trace down. All are 36x20 signed and numberd. remarks are obvious.
