Where does / did Anscomb run? Was she on Kootenay Bay - Balfour, or was she the 2nd vessel on ShelterBay-GalenaBay ?
I've only been on MV Needles. I want to do the Osprey2000 some day.

I've been on the Balfour-Kootenay Bay run once, and that was in 1995, just before I turned 8. We were leaving Castlegar, and were heading to Winnipeg to see some relatives, and then go camping with my cousins, who lived in Toronto at the time.

The Anscomb looks more like it could be run on the coast, rather than inland.

Yeah the Anscome sort of looks like the old Queen of the Islands! The only runs I have been on inland are the Kootenay Bay to Balfour on the Osprey 2000 and the Needle ferry! But yeah I was thinking that, it looks pretty stormy in that picture of the Galena. Does that ferry even have a little lounge or would you have to sit in your cars with your engine running on a cold windy winter day which in that photo looks like it could be that time of year!

When I had family out in Nelson, me and my Dad went down to the Big Orange Bridge, to see the new Ferry being built. That was the Osprey 2000. I was 12, and only had a fair bit of knowledge about how you built a ship, but couldn't figure out why it was orange....hahaha...I know why now of course though. I have pictures of this on one of my computers, and I have the day off today from work, so I've got some time on my hands today. So I'll be posting the pictures of the Osprey being built, and a video of travelling the Galena when I was about 8.

Haha, cool! Thanx for the info on Inland Ferries! You seem to have a lot of knowledge on the vessels that sail through there... I envy your ability to find these things out, and manage to get a job on these wonderful little boats!
Also Chris, hope your video is a better success then mine (flashback to "Nicola" thread)

I have travelled on the Osprey a few years ago from Kootenay Bay to Balfour. We took the last afternoon sailing before the crew change and they did the run in about 25 mins. I guess they wanted to get off work early that day, lol as it's about a 40 min crossing. I heard someone say on that sailing the crew like to get back sooner. I also took the Needles ferry that same trip and that was a neat little ferry. I have never been on the Galena Bay ferry but would like to do that one sometime.

Also would be interesting to do the Kootenay Bay run again this time on the Balfour the other ship during the summer they have running the route. You could ride those ferries back and forth all day seeing they are free.

Ports of registration are confusing also, and I think the Osprey 2000 is registered in Victoria. A vessel can be registered in a port that it's never even been at; a good example of this are FOC ports or Flag of Convenience ports ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_convenience ), where a ship will be registered at a port of a particular country for tax purposes, this is why you see a lot of vessels registered at, say, Nassau in the Bahamas for example.

how do you apply for a job to work on the osprey? Here's some vacation pics from August 2006: MV Shelter Bay, arriving at Shelter Bay, on the dammed Columbia River. This is the smaller of 2 ferries on this run: - Docking at Shelter Bay, which is the terminal at the Revelstoke end of the run. - The other ship, the MV Galena, docking at Shelter Bay. This as at approx 12:30pm, and 2nd ferry was closely trailing the 1st ferry, so obviously the schedule was out of whack. The MV Galena looks like an oversized navy landing craft. - Here's a scene from the filming of "The Amazing Race - BC Edition". Seriously though, it gives you a closeup of the car deck and the superstructure. (If you're keeping track of the clothes worn by the photo subjects, I can tell you that I practiced the "Tilley style of travel" of taking only a few clothes that were synthetic quick-dry, and doing nightly laundry in the hotel sink. This kept my duffel bag light) - On the other Arrow Lakes ferry route, the MV Needles. Looking back at the east shore, at the town of Fauquier. - All photos hosted by Tiny Pic. www.tinypic.com/ Edited to eliminate double picture posting

I would think you would have to contact Western Pacific Marine www.westernpacificmarine.com/I have wondered that too how you would apply for a job on the Osprey!

I know we don't have any discussion of the Kootenay Lake ferry so we can use this thread for that... In the meantime, here are some photos from this past Thursday while I was driving from Calgary to Nelson. To start, here's a photo of her docking at Kootenay Bay: Here's one of the outside decks... Here's one of the lounges A look at her car deck She even has a little coffee shop And as a bonus I'll throw in the MV Balfour passing us It's a beautiful crossing on a ferry much like the Skeena Queen but better and best of all, it's free!
