Harrop ferry, crossing the west arm of Kootenay Lake, between Balfour and Nelson BC. - morning of July 18, 2012. Stop, and read the self-directed loading instructions. Ok, now that you've read the sign, you may continue... - The ramp is raised, the journey begins. - There's not much to see from the middle of the trip The length of the deck We're already at the other side Heading back to the North side The inviting superstructure - It looks like there is a passenger room inside there. - ahh, the relaxing ambience of the passenger lounge. Not much has likely changed over the years. ------------------------ Post-script: When reading through my copy of "Ships of Steel", the story of Allied Shipbuilders Ltd., I noticed that Allied built a Harrop ferry, in 1961. Page 122 of this book shows a photo of a ferry at Harrop, but it's a much older and smaller ferry than the one that I rode last month. So, is the current Harrop ferry the one that was built by Allied in 1961? I didn't see a builder's-plaque on board. So I consulted my copy of Frank Clapp's booklet. - Mr. Clapp says that a 1-lane steel barge ferry started service in 1947. Then in 1962 (built in 1961) a new 2-lane ferry with longer ramps was put into service. This would be the ship pictured on page 122 of "Ships of Steel" and on page #29 of Mr. Clapp's booklet. - Ok, so the ship that I rode on must have been a newer ship, built sometime in the 1980s, I guess. --------------- And here's a news story from 2011 about the ferry's refit www.nelsonstar.com/news/117359313.html

Glade cable ferry, crossing the Kootenay River, west of Nelson BC and east of Castlegar BC. - Seen in morning on July 18, 2012, when the river was very high because of recent heavy rains. ----------------------------- View from up the road from the ferry landing. Now I am at the ferry landing, and she's headed for my shore. Note the casual signs warning about the shaky cables and the load limits because of the high water. A small and simple ferry. I didn't take advantage of the opportunity for a ride across and back. I should have..... --------------- Departing for the other side. - note the curved route that she takes, swinging out down river a bit and then over to the other side. Likely because of the slack in the cables and the river's current carrying her downstream a bit. - also note the 3 cables (the blue ones are the guiding cables, and the orange is the driver). ================== VIDEO of her leaving the highway side and of the cables being really active in their shaking, in the strong current :

I contacted Western Pacific Marine to ask about the current Harrop ferry, and here's the reply from them (many thanks for this) Ok, that was good to know: the current Harrop ferry is actually the old Nelson ferry, with some Castlegar/Robson service in between. - the current Harrop ferry is older than the previous Harrop ferry.

I love working on the two cable ferries near my place. And the fact that my crossing is where the under water cable ferry was invented makes it vary special to me. Kyle

Some onboard footage of the Harrop Ferry, from July 2012. - this cable ferry is on the west-arm of Kootenay Lake, between Nelson & Balfour, BC.
It services the small area of Harrop which is on the south side of the arm. Highway 3A is on the north-side of the arm.

I dont know if any of you have seen the new webcams they have at the Harrop Ferry but here is the link images.drivebc.ca/bchighwaycam/pub/html/www/569.htmlIt's kinda of cool if you do the replay the day button on there you can see the ferry going back and forth. These webcams are neat though cause you can actually see the ferry in webcams.

I recently did some traveling around the Kootenays while going to/from visiting the lady in Cranbrook. This poses a fairly good opportunity to check out some of BC's larger, and smaller, inland ferries. While in the Nelson area, I paid a visit to both the Harrop and Glade fer-- WAIT A MINUTE, THESE ARE CABLE FERRIES!!?? They aren't going to name it the Harrop Renaissance or the Harrop Adventure? I suppose Kootenay Lake Connector would just cause confusion with the other ferries running on Kootenay Lake.

If you go to the Drive BC webcams for the Harrop Ferry you can see the new ferry is in service now. I think it has been for a for a while now. They have photos on the Osprey 2000 Snack Bar Facebook page of the Harrop Ferry making it's way to Harrop with the Osprey in view.

Harrop II, the new cable ferry located on the west arm of Kootenay Lake east of Nelson, BC. This ferry replaced the earlier vessel Harrop in March of 2019 and is a little larger than its predecessor. I took this photo about a week ago when smoke from forest fires in the region was particularly thick.
