Hi team, It's my turn to do Flagship, and I've decided to do a more natural theme. Narrow Passages: When ferries come within close proximity to land. I understand that this is more location-specific, so I am hoping we can get a variety of images. I would encourage you to be creative, and submit images from a location that is less-popular.
To reduce confusion, I have created a list of suggested locations to help you out:
Suggested Locations (British Columbia):
- Active Pass (located between Galiano and Mayne Islands, Routes 1, 5, 9, and Seaspan)
- Northumberland Channel (located between Gabriola Island and Duke Point, Routes 20 and 30)
- Discovery Passage (located between Quadra Island and Campbell River, Route 23, Not In Service ferries)
- Seymour Narrows (north of Discovery Passage, Not In Service ferries)
- Gosse Pass / Colbourne Pass (located near Swartz Bay, Routes 1, 4, 5)
- Navy Passage (located between Mayne and Pender Islands, enroute to Saturna Island, Route 5)
- Anywhere on the Inside Passage/Discovery Coast (except Queen Charlotte Sound) (Route 10)
- Between the two Haida Gwaii Islands (Kwuna territory, near Skidegate, Routes 11 and 26)
- Baynes Sound (between Buckley Bay and Denman Island, Route 21)
- Between Denman and Hornby Islands (Route 22)
- Jervis Inlet (Route 7)
- Between Bowen and Gambier Islands (Route 3)
- Entrance to Snug Cove (Route 8)
- Entrance to Departure Bay (Route 2)
Suggested Locations (Washington):
- Rich Passage
- Entrance to Eagle Harbour (near Winslow terminal)
- Anywhere in San Juan Islands (EXCEPT between Anacortes and Decatur Island; and between Sentinel Island and Sidney)
Entrance to Keystone Harbour
Suggested Locations (Alaska):
- Entrance to Juneau
Wrangell Narrows (Petersburg)
I have revised this to be discretionary. Please do your best to follow the spirit of the theme. Those that do not qualify will be notified. Standard Submission Guidelines Apply. A ferry should be in the foreground of your image. The narrow passage scenery should be obvious and present in the photo (i.e. you can't take a photo from Active Pass, looking out into the Strait of Georgia. Restrictions:- You may submit up to three images.
- Each image should have a height range of 300-340 pixels, and a width range of 1060-1200 pixels (suggested resolution: 1200x340)
- For each image, submit a 'sampler' no wider than 1024 pixels.
Clear as mud? Feel free to send me a PM of questions/complaints/cat videos. Have fun!

What about ferries entering/exiting Snug Cove?

I would think most of the SE Alaska areas would qualify for this Flagship. Wrangell Narrows near Petersburg would definitely qualify. Good theme choice

Good choice, I have quite a few good pictures that fit this category. Would photos of a ferry entering Keystone Harbor, particularly the one below, be eligible? Steilacoom II by compdude787, on Flickr

Good choice, I have quite a few good pictures that fit this category. Would photos of a ferry entering Keystone Harbor, particularly the one below, be eligible? Sounds good. You're in, as long as the ferry is shown entering/exiting the harbour, and not in the berth. What about ferries entering/exiting Snug Cove? Same as above. I would think most of the SE Alaska areas would qualify for this Flagship. Wrangell Narrows near Petersburg would definitely qualify. Good theme choice My geographic knowledge of Alaska is not strong. You may need to help me out in this department.
I have added four locations based on suggestions: - Wrangell Narrows (AK)
- Entrance to Departure Bay (BC Route 2)
- Entrance to Snug Cove (BC Route 8)
- Entrance to Keystone Harbour (WA)
I would just like to emphasize again that the ship must be shown transiting the narrows. Ferries shown in berth are not eligible.

Ok, so I have a few suggestions to add: Victoria Inner Harbor (Duh) Most minor non-WSF ferry routes (Pierce co, Herron Island, Guemes Island, Lumni Island could also be eligible. Maybe the columbia river ferries as well)
For this one I will try to resist to my hurge of submitting Active Pass photos but if I have a really good one or can't find three other ones I could end up submitting one, but I hope that doesn't happen.

Most of our ferries in Washington, BC & Alaska, for the most part, operate in passageways that are fairly narrow. That is because most ferry routes are contained within some portion of the Inside Passage, which starts in the southern extremity of Puget Sound, and extends all the way north to Skagway, Alaska. The Inside Passage itself tends to be narrow; 'sub-channels' within it are narrower.
I think it might be good to 'narrow' the criteria here down to say channels that are not more than 400 metres (1/4 mile) in width. Perhaps even more restrictive than that would be good. Going further, it would be desirable to have photos in which both sides of the channel are visible, as well as having a boat in there somewhere, too.

I am regrettably disqualifying this photo, as the ferry is not shown actually inside the narrow passage, which kind of defeats the purpose of the theme. As stated in the first post of this thread: A ferry should be in the foreground of your image. The narrow passage scenery should be obvious and present in the photo (i.e. you can't take a photo from Active Pass, looking out into the Strait of Georgia. If you could submit a photo of the Kitsap inside Rich Passage, that would be much preferred. Thanks! You're probably wondering why I am allowing the San Juan photo: I did say anywhere in the San Juan Islands - my limited geographic knowledge hinders me from making any specific requests. I may change this upon further research (I won't disqualify your photo though, that would be kind of a jerk move, seeing as I said I'd allow anywhere in the SJI) .
I think it might be good to 'narrow' the criteria here down to say channels that are not more than 400 metres (1/4 mile) in width. Perhaps even more restrictive than that would be good. I did consider a distance regulation for the flagship theme, but decided to make things easier for myself by just creating a list, and requests can be pursued later. I was (roughly) following a 0.5 km guideline, similar to the suggested 400 m.

I think the onus should be on the one who is submitting their nomination, to find a photo that is consistent with the parameters of the theme. Your guidelines are pretty clearly spelled out. I wouldn't spend too much time revising them or adding new places to your list. You've told us what you are looking for. It's up to us to meet that requirement. However, if you want to revise the San Juan Islands section, I would say that the following locations are suitable for meeting the narrow channel criteria: Thatcher Pass (between Blakely and Decatur) Peavine Pass (between Blakely and Orcas - this one is rarely used, so if anyone were to get a photo of a ferry in there, that would be a gem) Harney Channel (between Shaw and Orcas) Upright Channel (between Lopez and Shaw) Wasp Passage (between Orcas/Crane and Shaw)

Mike C - I deleted both the photos I uploaded earlier. IMO the ferry in the San Juan picture wasn't close enough to shore, which I realized when comparing it to the pictures that were sumbitted. I will also try to follow the both-sides guideline. I'll check again in the pictures I have but all three photos might have tp come from ferry trips that I'd take this month. I also eliminated Rich Passage from my list as its too common for ferry pictures. So I guess we'll see. There is a particular photo of the Kaleetan in a very narrow passage that I'm thinking about...

There is a particular photo of the Kaleetan in a very narrow passage that I'm thinking about... If it's the one of Kaleetan going through Pole Pass, EGFleet had posted that in the Kaleetan thread at one point, but the link no longer works. I would never have believed a ferry, let alone a Super Class vessel, would be able to go through that pass if I had not seen the photo - pretty amazing.

No, its actually narrower than that and the photo is indeed from EGFleet. I'll reveal the mystery later today.

IMO Howe Sound and Lambert Channel aren't exactly "narrow passages."

This is an opportunity for members to use their discretion and ensure that their nomination meets the spirit & intent of the theme.
Our lesson from some of the nominations from last month was that if the theme is "ferry loading/unloading," then the nomination photo should show this action prominently. A shot from across a bay of a ferry in-berth was not what the theme intended.
Likewise for this month's Narrow-Passages theme, each nomination should show in an obvious way that the ferry is in a narrow passage.
So, please use your good judgement and discretion in ensuring that the theme's intent is met.
thanks !

Is the Skeena Queen photo good for this theme of "narrow passages"?

I exchanged 2 of my earlier nominations for new items.
Purpose: to zoom-out and show more of the "narrow passage" and less of the ship.
Reason: The theme is the narrow passage setting, so I don't need to have the best close-up of a ship. What's important is a good photo of the ship in this specific setting, where the setting is clearly seen.
ie. I've got better banner photos of Columbia and Kwuna that I didn't use this time, because I wanted to be true to this month's theme and choose photos that give the narrow-passage view of the route.

Hi everyone, I am thrilled with the popularity of the flagship theme, and the fact that we are dealing with these inquiries issues now. I appreciate those who have chosen to revisit their submissions for the purpose of better following the spirit of the theme. SolDuc: I will add your suggestions to the list, as they all qualify. At this point, I am going to say salt-water ferries only.Blue Bus Fan: Both entries are good I think. I will add Fulford Harbour to the list - good suggestion. As my other moderators have suggested, I ask that everyone follows the spirit of the theme as closely as possible. Thanks!

Is Grosse Pass close to Gosse Pass by any chance?
Haha. Not to be a complete pain though and to offer a legit suggestion, however I'm sure someone is bound to challenge you on it anyways, but Colbourne Pass which Swartz Bay is in the middle of may come up in addition to Gosse Pass. Ie: the route that the Spirits tend to normally enter and exit through, via Fircone Pt (East Entrance), or via Arbutus Island (West Exit). Colbourne Pass spans from Coal Island (Fircone Point) all the way to the northern most tip of Saanich Peninsula. Gosse Pass is strictly the gap between Piers and Knapp Islands.
Long Harbour might also come up as a possibility?
