The current appointed CEO of Translink is the man that drafted the Coastal Ferry Act version 1.0, also known as the height of poor transportation management by the BC Liberals. The outcome isn't surprising as others have discussed. Translink in its current form is much like BCFS undemocratic and unaccountable because of a weak provincial government. Adding insult to injury the Minister, Stone, is spewing his usual "it isn't the governments problem" on radio talk shows this afternoon. It seems hard to believe with the current government provincially and senior leadership at Translink that there will be any positive change. A "bulls-eye" piece of prose there 'Dane"! The Liberal government obviously misjudged the public's dislike, distrust, and disdain for Translink. (more accurately Translink's management group)

My thougts on the Mayor's Council:
This group was set up a few years ago to lobby the province to get transit moving in Metro Van, not long after much of the Provincial Transit Plan fell through. As MileagePhoto points out, this whole thing came together due to a laissez-faire attitude from the Clark government. What's the point of voting when the government "asks" if you want a new tax? I voted anyways... This 0.5% sales-tax was the fairest way of paying for upgrades, so I'm quite disappointed. My best guess is a property tax increase in the future.

I really rolled my eyes when I saw Jordan Bateman on Global just a couple of minutes ago, critisizing Translink for the Skytrain issues (or at least saying "people expect the system to be reliable" bla bla bla). That is the same guy who opposed a tax to upgrade that very system. I don't think very highly of him.

Every time there's an issue regarding public expenditure, this guy pops up on local TV stations or in the Postmedia papers to react against another government boondoggle, as he sees it. He's an example of people who consider themselves to be taxpayers, not citizens, and who always look to their own narrow financial interest rather than the public good. I don't think highly of him either. I'd also like to know how often he uses transit. Probably drives a Hummer. Seems like the type.

Also, Compass machines are available in the arrivals area at both TSA and HSB, where you can load a card up with either stored value or a pass.

I don't usually take in interest in transit, but the station they showed looked very European. We stayed in Untermenzing, just outside of Munich. Looks somewhat close. I like the glass elevator for safety.

I saw the compass card machines at Horseshoe Bay today. Are they like a credit card that you can use multiple times or are they like the regular passes you get onboard??? It would be good to know for next time we do a trip to Vancouver where we take the bus.

Besides, Karl, all of the information (including a series of Youtube videos!) is available on Translink's website. In addition, there is lots of chatter about the Compass card on the CPTDB. Some of the discussion is very informative, so I would suggest that you make an account and browse through the discussion there, as well.

It works the same way the old, magnetic stripe DayPass does - it is activated for the day of the card's first tap. You don't have to use it the day you buy it.

do you keep the same card? Is it like reloadable or do you have to get a new one each time?? For the day pass you can take either. The reusable card costs $6 (a deposit, actually) and is used for reduced fares (the soon to be gone faresavers), monthly passes and daypasses. The reusable card is good for people who live in Metro Vancouver or who travel here often. The disposable card comes with no extra cost. But, the reusable one can be reloaded online if you register it, saving you the trip to a vending machine when you arrive here in Van.

When the Evergreen Line does open later this year, it is going to funnel a lot more people into an already busy Commercial Drive - Broadway Skytrain Station since people heading downtown from the Millennium/Evergreen Line will have to transfer to a new train. I'm sure that's why they're working on some major improvements to the Commercial-Broadway Station, which will eventually include a whole new platform for westbound trains. I wonder how they plan to handle what I imagine will be an increased passenger flow from Commercial-Broadway into downtown when Expo Line trains are already near capacity when they arrive at that station as it is. Ideally they would have some trains just running between Commercial-Broadway and downtown, but I'm not sure if that's possible.
