Greetings Everyone! As my submission for the Voyager's Choice Flagship was the Winner, I have the Honour of Creating the Thread for September's Forum Flagship. For the Month of September, the Flagship will be "Ferries Away From Home."Pictures will be accepted of Ferries in an area not considered to be their regular service area. Since this can be interpreted in many ways, here are some examples of acceptable entries: -Vessels providing temporary relief for another vessel. -Vessels docked/moored at a foreign terminal or location. -Vessels that are not in service outside their regular service area.-Vessels on unique and/or rare route assignments. Vessels operating in their regular service area are strictly prohibited as are vessels that operate in an area seasonally. (e.g. Bowen Queen on Route 9a). An exception will be made however for a vessel docked at a terminal in/near its service area which the vessel calls to only on rare occasions. (e.g. the Queen of Burnaby docked in Blubber Bay) Pictures of vessels in refit will be accepted, however, I'd prefer members use them more as a last resort because certain vessels can appear at refit facilities more often than others. (Major and Northern vessels for example)Finally, in regard to vessels which have formerly served a route as a regular vessel, they will be accepted as long as the vessel featured has not worked as a regular on that Route in over 10 years. So a recent picture of the Queen of New Westminster on Route 30 would not be accepted whereas a recent picture of the Tachek on Route 18 would.
Members may Submit up to Three (3) Photos. Usual Restrictions Apply. For more information, refer to the Forum Flagship Rules and Information. Entries will be Accepted until Saturday, August 30th, 2014 at 18:00. A Poll will be set up following the Deadline.

Finally, in regard to vessels which have formerly served a route as a regular vessel, they will be accepted as long as the vessel featured has not worked as a regular on that Route in over 10 years. So this applies to Kaleetan in the San Juans. She's on a temporary assignment in San Juans, while Yakima is in the shop. Kaleetan was formerly a San Juan vessel, but that is over 10 years ago. So Kaleetan in SJI is a good candidate for this theme. ------------- Oh, and Salish has been busy on all sorts of non-regular routes, in the past few years: Bremerton, Triangle and SJI inter-island. So the roaming Salish (and Chetzemoka in SJI too) is a keeper.

Kaleetan and Klahowya in the SJs, Wenatchee and Puyallup traded their runs, Wally at BI, Cathlamet at Bremerton and finally the E-State at Vashon. I guess that's one positive point of vessel breakdowns.

Kittitas at Anacortes When was the Kittitas in the Islands to allow you to get that photo? She was coming into Anacortes to pick up or drop off crew cars, on her way to/from the DCI drydock.

And third, the Sealth rounding upright head on her way to Lopez in the San Juan Islands - January 27th. That's a nice pic of Sealth, but I'm not sure it qualifies for this particular flagship theme. I suppose this is debatable, but I consider Sealth to be one of the regular "fill-in" vessels up in the islands, either for inter-island duty, or as one of the mainline vessels in the winter. Sealth doesn't have a specific home port like some of our other ferries, but The San Juans, F-V-S, and yes, even Bremerton, are routes Sealth can be seen on a pretty regular basis. I'll leave it up to others to decide this, but those are my thoughts on the subject. I have a great photo of Klahowya at Orcas from a few years ago, when Klahowya in the islands was truly a rare thing. I did not submit it, because, as I understand it, it would not qualify now that Klahowya is a regular vessel there.

Any chance I can talk someone into digging out some pictures of the M/V Princess Marguerite III for this contest?

My 'entries' for September are the first three photos below. I am also displaying some others just for fun. I have not identified vessels or locations though it may be possible to read some of the vessels names in the photos & figure out the locations just by studying the surroundings. All vessels are away from home, at least by my reckoning. All WCFF members are welcome to provide feed back here on vessels & locations and to tell me why I should sub in one of the non-entries from the lower group of photos , etc... Any chance I can talk someone into digging out some pictures of the M/V Princess Marguerite III for this contest? This is the only photo I took of the QUEEN OF BURNABY when she was on Puget Sound, in another disguised name. I took this on a special NOAA cruise. I used a disposable (or reusable) camera that day. The day was cloudy. The vessel was about to round West Point to Pier 48 Seattle, landing bow first (she landed stern first at Victoria, just as she did at the Vancouver Island side of the TSA-SWB and HSB-DPB runs). farm6.staticflickr.com/5577/15070453232_965e659e16_o.jpgThis may not win this contest due to the quality. Or it might. I'll leave it up to our ferry friends to decide (history of occasion vs quality). BTW, she looked like one giant hockey stick here. Oh Canada, you love your hockey!

That photo of the BURNABY, in her hockey stick scheme, was taken when she had the name ROYAL VICTORIAN on her sides and stern. Then, PM3. Finally back to QOB. Will she get another name after retirement? Who knows! We have some good candidates here for next month's FFSB. The ballots are coming soon. VOTE!

Interesting to note that it was the Yakima, Kitsap, and Sealth all serving the triangle for that one Sunday, while all the regular boats were in for maintenance. It was the Tillikum that needed covered for just the one day that brought over the Yakima.
