I've been getting my inner nerd primed and planning to tackle riding the last 8 in-service WSF ferries I've not yet ridden yet over Labor Day weekend. The WSF website, Googling, this forum, and evergreenfleet.com have been very helpful in constructing a plan to bag three on the San Juan run, one on the Edmonds route, one from Bainbridge, 1 from Bremerton, and 2 on the Fauntelroy run. Being a motorcycle rider, the ferries are a hoot anyway with boarding privelges and planning to camp one night on Shaw. I also regularly ride competitive scavenger hunts....making the puzzle of time schedules, boat position, and unexpected changes exciting to figure out. I don't expect I'll actually be able to snag the Hiyu over the weekend unless something lucky happens and may end up snagging the Sanpoil as my last on Monday (or another ride on another weekend), but if I can finish bagging the in-service ferries including the Evergreen State by Labor Day...it will be a great weekend. For those interested, I have a blog I'll be doing GPS tracking at www.mattwatkins.org/blog starting Wednesday, August 27th, after work and riding this.:

What's your definition of "snag" and "bag" ? Ridden a particular ferry as a passenger--either as a walk-on, on a bicycle, motorcycle, or car. Is there a better nautical or ferry enthusiast term I should use...or a standard in the community for documentation?

We also use the term "Slam" for the completion of a set. ie. riding all 4 WSF Super ferries, or all 5 BCF C-Class. --------- Have you ridden any BC Ferries or Alaska ferries?

That's yet another great way to slice and dice it....nice! If my plans go as hoped, I'll be slamming the Evergreen State, Issaquah, Super, Jumbo, and Jumbo Mark II classes in the same trip as 8 of the ferries include finals in each class. I have ridden some B.C. ferries! I *think* I remember riding the Queen of Nanaimo (and/or Queen of Vancouver maybe) in 1979 from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo. I wasn't keeping perfect track when I was 11. Mom was leading our Victoria adventure in a puke green 1975 Ford Granada, we couldn't get a sailing directly to Schwartz Bay, and it was my second ferry ride of my life. I also *think* we did the return leg from Schwartz Bay. I do know they were WAY bigger than the Martha S. I'd first ridden when I was 5! Additionally, I rode the Rennassaince and Celebration in July 2013 during one of my competitive motorcycle scavenger hunts....called the Iron Butt Rally. And I had a similar sense of HUGE on the leg out. B.C. ferries are on serious steroids! Those rides helped solidify my plans to start riding at least WSF Ferries first. Haven't been to Alaska yet.

One quick comment on your blog page, related to photo credit (collective "groan" from readers, as this topic rears its head again): You've got some nice WSF ferry photos on your page, none credited. Included is at least one from our member SolDuc, and there might be others. The most common reaction from ferry photographers here (those who are serious about their work) is that permission is almost always given, whenever asked. And it's better to ask permission first, than to ask after. And lots of us take photo-use issues very seriously. Again, all this becomes moot when someone asks, and then credits. It's that simple and easy. --------------- Changing back to your blog of snagging and bagging, I appreciated your section on rider fatigue and sleep needs. Lots of us who've done extreme ferry riding (usually a series of northern long-distance ferry trips) have experience with this same issue. Power naps during the day seem to be the answer.

Indeed, man, there's a lot of uncredited work floating around in that post. Mine are the photos of the Kaleetan, Klahowya (with the Chelan)and Issaquah. The one of the Elwha is by Kahloke I think, the one of the Walla Walla gone clam digging is from Tom Sanislo (but appears on EvergreenFleet.com) and the one of the Puyallup is from Steve Pickens. The one of the Evergreen State is from Jason Slotemaker and the Sealth is from Flickr user -Jon. I have no clue as to where the Hiyu photo comes from. Personally I don't mind having my photos left on the blog as long as appropriate credit (to SolDuc/Guy de Gouville) is given.

Changed to what I believe are in the public domain, CC BY-SA 3.0, and/or my pictures. Unfortunately, my time budget doesn't allow for the time of seeking and verifying individual permission for each image...I'll live without most of the images. Your point also makes me want to revisit my own policy. I don't want to expect people, for non-commercial purposes, to have to do specific attribution of images I put on the Internet. Thanks for the notes all.

Photo crediting is actually pretty easy and quick, assuming that you stay on this forum and see pics you like on this forum. It's as easy as sending a forum personal-message.
And most of us here think that attribution of images is a good and noble thing; well worth the time and effort.

I completed my ride and bagged 9 ferries in one weekend I hadn't ridden before! I'll be posting some pictures and details later this week. In summary, it went mostly according to plan. My biggest goof was not reading the ferry schedule correctly and reinforced with some bum advice that motorcycles would be treated like walk-ons for the run from Orcas - Shaw (that then went on to Friday Harbor). hile I could have ridden the same ferry several hours later--I was camping on Shaw and would have gotten in after dark. The terminal operator was a great sport though, asked the captain via radio, and I was granted permission "for a Danish". It was a joke of course, but I took the gesture to heart and did my best by buying a bag of cookies at the store nearby, and gave it to the bosun to share with the captain and/or crew. I flipped a U, was the only vehicle pointed that way, and rode off carefully to avoid any more drama. Thanks 'Cap! This was one of the many moments over the weekend that I got a glimpse into how running ferries is FAR more complex than I ever had a clue. ![]() I got lucky on Sunday riding the MV Walla Walla as she'd puke some fuel about 24 hours later and be taken out of service.
And while I'd have preferred to finish my ride with the MV Evergreen as my last...I didn't want to wait two extra hours for the cycle to complete again...so I called the MV Issaquah my last one for the Puget Sound and actually had a person snap a picture of my accomplishment.
I was truly done with WS Ferrries on Monday as I rode across the state and bagged the MV Sanpoil for what I consider my last one...unless I get lucky enough to ride the MV Hiyu.....and until the MV Samish starts sailing. Where to next? Me thinks the BC Ferries might have to be a possibility as some sort of binge ride....
