WOW, what great pictures! I had no idea that the fire was that extensive. It's amazing that Black Ball could accomplish such a rebuild and return her to service. Have any photos of her in service on Puget Sound before the rebuild been located? I have never found any, but I haven't made a major effort. She was a favorite of mine, although I never had the opportunity to ride on her. I remember seeing her often along with SS City of Sacramento, SS San Mateo and SS Shasta idle at a isolated pier in West Seattle. Later as a young lad I used to ride my bike by her on Lake Union where Stone Way meets the lake. Thanks again!!

Here she is before the fire, with the San Mateo parked directly behind her.

I think that last photo was taken at the idle ferry dock near Alki (West Seattle). As a young tad, I sometimes saw 5 or 6 of the Black Ball old timers tied up there and wished I could ride on them. The old steamers looked so beautiful, yet so sad. The original public cabin on SS Malahat, before the fire, had two levels. They must have been beautiful inside.
Question: SS City of Sacramento, like SS Malahat, also had two passenger decks/cabins at one time, but all of the photos I have of her in service on Puget Sound show that the top deck had been removed. Did she ever operate on Puget Sound with the top deck cabin? I always wondered why it was removed.

That portion, which was an "extended smoking room on the texas deck" was removed before she went into service on Puget Sound. (The Sea Chest, December 1990)

And I just got just this original snapshot of the Malahat heading toward Bremerton with a date of August 1945 written on the back of it.
