Wartsila's rendering certainly is one of the more interesting uses of my photography!

Since the ships will be getting a new set of engines during the conversion, why would they not go to diesel electric propulsion. I have heard that the system work very well, and reduces the vibrations caused by gearing and perhaps frees up space as well. There are many experts on this board, and their thoughts are eagerly awaited. Thanks

None of the single-enders in the fleet have such, to my knowledge.

So the SoVI is unexpectedly out of service for at least two weeks, some of that time having already passed. Best case scenario to return seems to be end of the month.
I post this here only because it is interesting to see how much this has stressed the major ferry deployment. Sunday sailings are added for Rte 30 in the morning and the New West is covering several more tips but that's still eleven sailings down according to the BC Ferries news release.
While I appreciate this is unexpected and refits of other ships will be scheduled as much as possible to not conflict with the Spirit class MLU it still makes me think we are in for quite the unpleasant couple years being down a Spirit in the shoulder and low seasons. The extra time to get to Europe certainly isn't ideal either.

Could we see a Cowichan class ferry going between Swartz bay and tsawwassen while the spirits are in Poland? Or the super C's?

Could we see a Cowichan class ferry going between Swartz bay and tsawwassen while the spirits are in Poland? Or the super C's? Considering the Coastal Celebration currently does daily sailings year-round between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, I'd say that's a yes to your second question.

Driving through the tunnel today and noticed the Spirit of VI is at Deas, what is it having done? Its not very often there is not at least one of the Spirits running.

With the Spirit of BC away in Gdansk Poland for her mid-life refit, and Spirit of VI is having a quick annual refit done at Deas (Fraser Marine Unit). Coastal Celebration has been the #1 Tsawwassen based ship on the Tsawwassen-Swartz route during the Spirit of BC's long absence. Coastal Renaissance is the #1 Swartz Bay ship while the Spirit of VI is in refit.

Just to add to what Mike has said, in recent years it has been 'normal' for both Spirits to be out of service during January & February. One of the Spirits would be in refit while the other was idled but still in service only to do the extra boat even hour sailings on Fridays & Sundays.

Someone told me that there going to make another Spirit class called "Spirit of SJ Island, is that right It's part of the proposed triangle service between Vancouver Island, the lower mainland, and San Juan Island. Don't tell anyone, but BC Ferries plans to build a new terminal at the English Camp on San Juan Island. The official reason is to tap into the promising traffic demand of Victoria and Vancouver travelers who need to visit San Juan Island. The unofficial (ie. real) reason has to do with an NDP-Green strategy to gradually undo the effect of the Treaty of Washington. When the new terminal and new ship are ready, BC Ferries plans to celebrate with a BBQ on San Juan Island. Pulled Pork on a Kaiser bun.

Just poor weather ahead en route and are holed up for an improvement in the weather. Smart...don't make a mess of the galley and piss off the cooks this early in a long voyage!
