For November, the theme will be Ferries alongside vessels of the Navy, Coast Guard, or Police. Keeping it strictly with the navy has only produced one entry, so I hope with expanding it to include Coast Guard and police vessels, we might get a few more. With Remembrance Day in November, I've been trying to think of how to incorporate the idea of acknowledging those who have served and do serve our countries with ferry photography. Submissions will ideally feature a navy, coast guard, or police vessel and a ferry prominently in the picture. We'll accept car and or passenger ferries from California to Alaska. If anyone has old photographs of some of the old liners that were converted to military ships for the war, that would also be acceptable, however please do not use copyrighted material. - John H --------------------------------------------- - Entries will be accepted until 20:00 Thursday, October 30. Voting will take place shortly after. - Preferred banner size is 1200 x 340 (pixel size), however we will accept banners down to 1080 x 300. Anything outside these dimensions will not be eligible. - Please post your entries no wider than 1024 pixels, with a link to the larger image. Got to get those Canadian Navy photos in before the whole operation is gone Unfortunately I have no photographic skills, but the Esquimalt Engraving Dock provides some fantastic opportunities.

Just going to bump this topic to see if we can get a few more submissions. I thought due to the prominence of the navy down south we might get some from there. I was thinking of maybe including Navy landing craft (on their own), since they are basic ferries, to give more options, but I'm not sure how many photos there are of those (if you have some, go ahead and post them). I don't mind a bit of discussion here for the next couple days... let me know if you think this theme is workable or not. I may have to come up with a new idea. - John H

I don't mind a bit of discussion here for the next couple days... let me know if you think this theme is workable or not. I may have to come up with a new idea. While it's by no means impossible to photograph Ferries and Navy Vessels together, it's never really been a focus among our members. I can't recall anyone posting any Ferry/Navy combo shots in recent times and until this Flagship, it hadn't really crossed my mind. To get these kinds of shots, it's simply being in the right place at the right time. The same goes with any ship on the coast, including Ferries. Perhaps if you included Coast Guard vessels with the theme it might broaden the amount of entries. At the same time though, Ferry/Coast Guard combo shots could also fall under my point above. If it comes to picking a new theme. Perhaps one of the runners up from the Voyager's Choice Month? Fifty-Year-Old Steel might make for a fun month.

I've decided not to introduce a new theme halfway through the month. However, I have edited the criteria to include Coast Guard and police vessels (alongside ferries) in the hope of getting at least a few more entries.

Would the SeaBus work, John? The Seabus would count as the "Ferry" yes. - John H

I'm guessing otherwise-relevant shots from Istanbul wouldn't be allowed?

Great photo of three distinctive types and ages of vessels which today could be entitled: 'two down and one to go' I'm guessing the Prince George's smokey funnels was a sign that she was coming into or exiting from a pre-season check-up at Esquimalt? The demise of the Prince George was an absolute travesty!

I'm thinking this is HMCS Protecteur on the right. Recently damaged and soon to be decomissioned.

Found one more, almost by accident today, from way back in the 1990's. Had to scan it! The BURRARD OTTER is in the foreground, and I think in the background is the USS RANGER. It visited Vancouver in 1992 (I had to Google it). However, I could be wrong... the numbers on the control tower and partly obscured, however the USS RANGER was 61, and that could fit. www.westcoastferries.ca/images/forum/NOV2014CL.jpg- John H

It's not Ranger, sad to say - Ranger never had the additional mast aft of the island with the SPS-48 antenna on top. Same goes for the rest of the Forrestal class (CVs 59 through 62), due to the presence of one of the elevators in that location. The large size of the island, and the location of the foremast, suggest it's a non-nuclear carrier (which makes sense, since Vancouver is a nuclear-free zone, as those signs remind you as you drive into the city limits along Hastings). Since it's not a Forrestal, we can narrow the possibilities to the Kitty Hawk class (63, 64, 66) and the JFK (67) (also not a Midway class due to island size). Of these, we can rule out CV-66 USS America, as her navigation radar on the forward side of the foremast was higher than the radar on the aftside of that mast, whereas the configuration in your photo is the opposite: the forward radar is lower than the aft one. Plus, America was an East Coast-based carrier, which makes it highly unlikely for her to have visited Vancouver. Same goes for the Kennedy. So it's either Kitty Hawk (CV 63) or Constellation (CV 64). The Navy's official history says Constellation visited Vancouver for five days during EXPO86: www.navy.mil/navydata/nav_legacy.asp?id=69 Does that spur any memories? I can find no mention of Kitty Hawk in Vancouver.

Thanks for your expert eye, timmyc! By process of elimination, then, it must be the USS CONSTELLATION.

Also, not to drag this off topic, but when my mom was pregnant with me she had false labour on the Constellation when it was here for Expo. "We" had to get evacuated off so I wouldn't be born an American, in addition to obvious medical concerns.

It's the Constellation , I missed school for a tour! So what year was the Constellation in Vancouver when you had the tour, do you remember? I was going to say, if it was 1986, you would have been very young! - John H
