Did I miss a service notice that the Cumberland is side lined and the Salish Eagle is taking her place on the SGI route. Or is this training for the replacement for the Mayne Queen when the 4th Salish class vessel arrives? Probably refit for the Queen of Cumberland.

I see the Cumberland is now in dry dock in Esquimalt today. I just didn't see the Cumberland move for two days while the Salish Eagle was parked and operating on the SSI at Swartz Bay.

Some of the crews who work on the Cumberland wont need training when the 4th Salish class vessel arrives as many of them have already worked on the Salish Eagle and Raven during past refit relief periods for the Cumberland.

That is why BC Ferries did vessel swap on fly. I wonder if the Northern Adventure will be just for 14 days for Northern Expedition to be cleaned.

Why is it the Renaissance can only run a modified schedule?

I truly don’t understand the current schedule for route 30 because Coastal Renaissance will stay in Nanaimo for 4 hour period in evening; while, Queen of Coquitlam will perform the 6:15 pm from Duke Point and 8:45 pm from Tsawwassen.

I second that I don’t get this schedule right now especially seeing the Renaissance is not doing anything else at the moment.

Yes, the reason for the oddball schedule for the Renaissance is due to crew training. At Tsawwassen, only the regular SOBC crew and a handful of casual/relief pool are cleared to work on the Coastal. The Alberni/New West crew are not cleared on the Coastal, and in order to staff it, it’s likely requiring staffing resources from not only Tsawwassen, but Swartz Bay and Nanaimo. It’s large scale crew training event happening there at the moment, not to mention covid protocols requiring minimal crew, so it’s beneficial to have the ship doing both an operational sailing and also having time off the run for crew to practice ship handling, and drills/emergency response.

Hey Ferryman... thanks for posting that! I ran into somebody who has yrs upon yrs of experience working for the corp who is also a big union guy inside. He says he wasn't aware of that special training session. He's never heard of them doing something like you described before. He actually had a chuckle cause it sounds like a great show of efficiency by simultaneously training crew from three terminals and the corp is known for... you know. I wish I was had your post to show him -I was only able to ad-lib what you said. Can you give more context? I think there is a small error in your post though... re: "The Alberni and the NW crew are not cleared on the Coastals..." I think what you meant to say was watches, but even that isn't entirely correct. Crew members are individually cleared for any of the boats they work on. Watches stay together, so they stay with the ship they are assigned to. I believe this to be correct; can somebody verify? (mods: if this develops into a bigger discussion, does this belong in this thread still? ~sorry)

Service notice - Revised Schedule - Northern Adventure Posted: Tuesday, June 15, 2021
Revised Schedule Port Hardy – Midcoast – Prince Rupert – Haida Gwaii
Please be advised that due to a mechanical problem with its main engine, the Northern Expedition was removed from service on June 3 and will require extensive repairs. BC Ferries estimates the return to service date will be early August; this date will be confirmed by the end of June.
While the Northern Expedition undergoes repairs, a modified northern schedule will be in place on the Inside Passage and Haida Gwaii routes serviced by the Northern Adventure from now until early August. Please check our website for the updated schedule. Impacted customers, with bookings on the affected sailings, will be contacted by our Customer Care team.
The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. We don’t take the decision to revise sailing schedules lightly, as we know customers rely on us to get to their destinations. We recognize this is not welcome news to our customers and communities who have been looking forward to travel bans being lifted and travel returning this summer. We apologize for any inconvenience these schedule changes may cause and will keep you updated as more information is available on the repair plan for the Northern Expedition. We are working to repair the vessel as quickly as possible.
Looks like the MAK let them down. An amazing two months plus for repairs in the middle of the busy tourist season, I have to wonder if the block or crank is damaged. I know a person who is booked on a tour group that was supposed to be doing the day light transit from Rupert. To keep the group and to appease the seniors in that group BCF are now providing cabins for them and a dinner. Not very interesting journey though, when most of the great scenery will be in the middle of the night.

From the notice: ...due to technical website challenges, these changes will not be reflected in the online schedules found at bcferries.com. One of the reasons BC Ferries gave for eliminating printed schedules was that they didn't allow for changes, the way a website does. Hmmh.
