Island Aurora, meet Coastal Celebration. More witless, meaningless names, not commemorating anything to do with the coast or its people.

Island Aurora. Boring..... And now Island Discovery. Boringer. But now they can bring back the Island Princess (once they retire the North Island Princess...) If we're going to un-retire a 'Princess' as the 3rd vessel of this foursome, how about paying homage to the initial fleet and call the 4th Island class vessel 'Island Queen'? Frankly, I've had my fill of 'Adventures', 'Expeditions', Discoveries, et al. The Greek calamity, now known as the 'Northern Sea Wolf' doesn't sound so bad after all eh?

@curtis can you post your tour here?
The ships look quite terrific inside & out to me. The passenger lounge still has the not particularly comfortable metal seating, but is arranged nicely with consideration for charging, large windows, a TV and generally open space.
Car deck markings are also quite distinct.
I will continue to make fun of the names, but still really like these new builds!

I actually don’t mind the names could they have been better yes. The interior seems nice, I am glad that BC Ferries is coming into future with charging stations at every seat, wise that BC Ferries tried to bring Wifi to these ships. I hope to catch on these vessels in summer.

Breaking news: The names have been revealed! I’ll wait for the official word, but I will say the sleuthing Low Light Mike did has paid off. Thanks to Mike's work I knew the names of these vessels months ago! Congrats to you, LLM. Which vessel goes to which route?

Which vessel goes to which route? Can confirm that the Island Discovery will go to Route 18, while Island Aurora will go to Route 25.

@curtis can you post your tour here? Done! Had to do a little work, but it should work now!! Here are links to the tour of the Island Discovery I made earlier today for our WCF Social Media pages. For the Facebook crowd (This should also work for the non-social media crowd) you can view the majority of the posted pictures in their unedited form. (e.g. none of the bells and whistles the young people use for their story posts) The only thing really missing from what was originally posted are the videos: Island Discovery/Island Aurora FacebookFor those of you who view our WCF Instagram, you can get the more complete unaltered version of the Island Discovery Tour: Island Discovery/Island Aurora Instagram

The likely names of the four vessels arriving in 2022.
Island Adventure. Island Explorer. Island Connector. Island Commuter.

I want to know about doors?
How do the doors leading from inside lounges to outside deck space compare with the Salish vessels? Have they installed double sets of slow moving 'submarine wannabe' doors with triple annoying electronic beepers? I hope not ...

Have they installed double sets of slow moving 'submarine wannabe' doors with triple annoying electronic beepers? I hope not ... Thankfully none of those overbuilt Salish Class doors made it onto the Island Class vessels! They use those sliding hydraulic doors BC Ferries has been using on most of their vessels built since the 1990s. (e.g. on the car deck of the Spirits or the Capilano/Cumberland) The Salish Class actually have this door system too, but they only put them in the stairwells between the main vehicle deck and the passenger lounge. Why they didn’t use the same system for the sun deck doors I will never know.

More name suggestions. Island Transporter. Island Link. You're not serious? Also, just curious... why a new account, when you already had one? The old 'Stingray'. I guess one might forget one's past online ventures.

Regarding the names for this new class of ferries ... Yes, the names are as bad as those given to the Coastal trio. Further, I do not think they should reuse names already given to other ferries currently in the fleet. For instance, Island Connector would sort of duplicate the BS Connector; Island Adventure would duplicate Northern Adventure.
Maybe they could just go back to Queen names seeing as they seem to have trouble coming up with anything original & meaningful.

Not a snowball's chance in hades that there will be any more 'Queen' designations... they wouldn't want to conjure up notions of our imperial past. At least the 'Salish' names speak to the natural heritage of our coast. The first two 'Island' class names suggest that we've gone back to the focus group nothingness of the 'Coastal' vessels.

In as much as I'm rather nonplussed about the 'focus group nothingness' names to which 'Neil' refers, I'm afraid BCFS may be wanting to avoid the increasing rush to be 'politically correct' with all things 'Indigenous' or 'First Nations'. There must be a way to acknowledge all of our political and historical past, while remembering that, like it or not, British Columbia Canada is part of the Dominion of Canada, a constitutional monarchy, with our Queen to whom we bear allegiance, not the Prime Minister. We, in Canada, are therefore bit of an oddity as members of the British Commonwealth of Nations, so we are hardly free of our Imperial past. That said, we must find a way to acknowledge both sides of this relationship with our First Nations peoples, and not trip over ourselves in becoming nauseatingly 'politically correct'. We could, in consultation with the appropriate First Nations groups perhaps double name our vessels, (which has been done in at least one case) whereby demonstrating a 'co-equal' acknowledgement of parts of our history that unfortunately can never be totally re-written.

Will both the Island Aurora and Island Discovery enter service around the same time? BC Ferries is often fairly responsive to questions like this. Best if you ask them, and then let us know.

Besides some short days of docking practice and maneuvers with the Discovery, both ships have spent more time docked over the last two weeks. Is service entry being delayed? Anyone have any insight on the future plans for service for these vessels. BCFS is not returning emailed questions of mine.

Operating losses are so horrific right now that I would imagine they're cutting corners wherever they can, and it's unlikely that summer capacity would need to be ramped up this year. As long as the elderly N.I.P. stays functional, there's little need to rush things.

As long as the elderly N.I.P. stays functional, there's little need to rush things. I don't really have any insider knowledge on this one other than what I hear in casual conversation but the push is still on to have the Discovery take over by mid-May. In terms of cost-benefit analysis keeping the N.I.P. in service beyond that time-frame would certainly be the more expensive option. Again, my impression from casual conversation and with the understanding that I have not yet personally set foot on an Island Class vessel, the crews training on board have been pretty impressed with these boats. I wouldn't read too much into how the vessels are being utilized during this pre-service period.
