With the Salish Orca now at Deas, BC Ferries has commented on when there will be a chance for the public to see the ship in an up-close and personal way.
Yes, it should be "open ship" not "open house" but I'm just happy that there will be such an event.

Salish Orca was moved over to Berth 2 at Deas this morning. Really interesting to compare her for size beside the Queen of Alberni (left), Queen of Oak Bay (right), and Northern Adventure (far right)

Salish Orca is presently making her way downstream on the Fraser River, just passing Steveston right now. Her AIS destination is Tsawwassen, and is likely heading for Berth 1.
Because she is still a foreign flagged ship, she still requires pilot guidance, and the redwise crew will be crewing the vessel.

A Times-Colonist story about the artist and the artwork on the Salish Orca. HERE----------- As an aside, it is interesting (and disturbing) how the very simple thing of the ship's "Salish" name, and/or the artwork is a trigger for a few people in Ferry facebook groups to go ranting on all sorts of racial and other off-topic tirades. To me, it is lovely art and a lovely name that honours the west coast. But I guess people have triggers from some deep anger. Funny how a ship name and artwork can bring that out...

I found myself at that new gargantuan mall in Tsawwassen yesterday so I thought I'd take a short drive down the causeway and check out the Orca with my own eyes for the first time. I parked in the passenger pick-up lot which allowed me to get pretty close. The bow doors were up so I could see inside quite well too. One thing that struck me about it...it seems quiet tall and narrow in comparsion to it's length...especially compared to the Cumberland. Makes me wonder if it may be a bit of a "wobbler" like the old Queen of the Islands was...I was only a kid at the time but I can still remember how it listed making the turns in Active Pass. It was fun for us kids, but the adults didn't seem to appreciate it. Sure does look nice in person though. I'm excited to step aboard for the first time. Though I may have to wait for the Eagle to arrive.

So, no real difference up top, and the deeper hull may provide more stability.

So the Orca has been sitting at Tsawwassen for some days now and no one from the forum got pictures of her there yet? We are slacking off....LOL!
Pictures of her at Tsawwassen to be clear.

I think some of my Forum mates up there in the land where the "Maple Leaf" flies on flag poles may have overspent on holiday shopping. When they get their bank accounts stable, I can assure you they'll start traveling to watch and riding ferries more often and taking good photos avidly again.

I was in Tsawwassen twice this weekend (once on Friday night going to Vancouver and again on Sunday evening coming back) but it was too dark for me to get any decent pictures with my cruddy phone camera (travelling on route one and having the Orca docked the opposite side of the terminal didn't help). I guess I'll have to skip class on Friday to catch an earlier ferry out of SWB when I go this weekend!

I actually did get a couple of "Orca shots" from it's current location in Tsawwassen when I went to have a peek...but honestly, they are nothing to write home about. I blame the camera (phone)...or the skills (or lack) of the photgrapher. One thing is certain...to hang with the great photographers on this site I will need to upgrade both my equipment AND my skills. On my next SGI trip, assuming it's still parked there, I will be able to get some great shots from the departing Nanaimo.

Forum member Koastal Karl posted some decent shots of the SalOrc @ Tsawwassen Terminal on Facebook this past weekend. Too bad that he has not posted them here also.

Second time getting up close to the Orca. I didn't make it in time for daylight photos but I had a real camera (ie. not my phone) with me this time so I managed to get some photos where you can actually tell there is a ferry in the picture! Maybe one of these days I will get to see her in the daylight but for now I'll have to live with dark and/or blurry. Salish Orca as seen from the Coastal Renaissance approaching berth 4 at about 10:30pm. Here is one from the terminal side with slightly better lighting. And here is my best attempt at an "interior" shot. I wasn't quite tall enough to see all the way over the fence (even from the roof of my moms minivan) but I still kind of like this one. I'm really excited to see the garage deck in action because when I look at this photo it somewhat blows my mind that theres is a whole other car deck hiding underneath.

Fourth time through Tsawwassen since the Orca got there and I finally got to see her in the daylight!! Here is a couple more shots I took earlier this evening. I don't foresee any more trips through TSA in the near future so this might be my last encounter with her until she enters service (which I will undoubtedly be driving up to Comox for), can't wait! Same one as last night but thought I might as well post a daylight version. As seen from the departing Coastal Celebration at 5pm this evening. Last one I got before my camera died.
