Here is the theme for October-November 2017 flagship banners: "Coastal Communities Dependent on Ferries"
The nomination period happens during August-September, up to deadline of September 28, 2017:
This theme is different. There are no ferries and no ferry terminals. If this disappoints you, that's ok. This type of theme is a creative break and a chance to do and see something different. Embrace the creative opportunity.
Banners for "Coastal Communities Dependent on Ferries" are non-ferry and non-terminal photographs of communities that are served by life-line ferry routes.
Let me define the routes where you will find these coastal communities:
- Most of BCF routes (but not mainland major routes, not Langdale, not Powell River (too large), not Saanich Inlet).
- Skidegate or Alliford Bay (but not Prince Rupert)
- For BC Ferries minor routes, don't include communities on the "big city" side of the route. ie. Don't include Nanaimo, Chemainus, Crofton, Port McNeill, Campbell River, etc. We're focusing on the other side of those lifeline routes.
- WSF San Juan routes, but not Sidney or Anacortes
- Alaska routes, but not Bellingham or Prince Rupert
- BC Central Coast route (Bella Bella, Shearwater, Ocean Falls, Bella Coola)
Let me suggest some example scenes:
- Downtown, village core
- Landmarks associated with the community
- Rural scenes typical of that community
- Streetscapes
There are lots of possibilities. Keep good-taste in mind, and please respect peoples' privacy as much as possible (ie. no forum paparazzi shots of Neil grocery shopping at the Hornby Island Co-op or Brandon jogging down a road at Eastsound.)
Let your banners be an example of the local community scene, not necessarily of the visitor tourism scene. There is a difference.
For example, I could do a banner of my favourite tourist resort on Quadra Island (Taku Resort & Marina). But that's not a community thing, it's an outsider experience. A community park or view that residents & visitors enjoy, or a streetscape, are more attuned to this theme. Residents and visitors both enjoy Rebecca Spit as a highly used park, and that's a great banner for this theme.
