Does anyone know when the North Island Princess, because I was going to go on it this spring break but I am not sure if that is going to happen now due to the Coronavirus. I would like to know just on case I have to plan a trip to Powell River April or May. from what I understand the NIP will be replaced by one of the two Island class ferries somewhere in the time frame of May or June but i am not to certain of this so sorry if I am not correct on this. Cheers Jimmy PS the Coronavirus is being blown up by the media and unless you are a senior or have underlying health problems then it is very unlikely that you will die and you will be fine+ BCFS is cleaning every inch of passenger accessible areas to avoid any risks.

Let's not be stupid. The media isn't blowing things up. You might be fine, but this isn't just about you. It's about the vulnerable people you could pass something to. Yes, live your life, but take all the precautions that are being publicized. This isn't a hoax, as even the clown in the White House has now admitted.

I wouldn't be so quick to just brush it off as media hysteria. While currently the chance of contracting it here in Canada is low, that could change very rapidly.

I agree but it was all because of people eating bats and monkey brains and then coming all over the place and now its all over the world but keep it in mind that when compared to the black plague and Ebola the deaths are minimal but that's just me and my family's opinion.v

Cheers Jimmy C Nothing to do with anyone being offended, or with what anyone's religious beliefs are. What's important is recognizing that many millions around the globe are at significant risk, and that all of us take every prudent step possible to ensure that we don't harm those who don't have our vitality. It's not a media event.

All I know is that I'm thankful that I'm not a moderator anymore...
I don't have to figure out how to respond to posts about eating bats, about the inevitable death and advice on how to live, and on whether we should care about not transmitting viruses to vulnerable people.

You know Mike if i may call you Mr.Horn you just made me chuckle and i should be controlling my mouth but i do have ADHD and Autism among other disabilities which i take as a blessing, but as one wise gentleman once told it's always good to have debates to know other peoples opinions aslong as you are not belittling or throwing racial slurs at gods people. AS god says and you being a believer might know this to but there is only one race and thats the human race. Cheers Jimmy Carlos

Aswell my poor brother Jack had to have his trip to London which he has been looking forward to for months cancelled due to the coronavirus so i am not saying that the media is blowing it up but millions of people die of the flu each year and the media won't cover that but all of a sudden the coronavirus comes along and despite not being as deadly or at least for now as the flu the media jumps on it like a swarm of locusts destoying a farmers crops.

If you think this whole business surrounding COVID 19 is just 'media hype' you need to look at the numbers coming out of Italy. There is no reason whatsoever that those numbers could not be repeated in this part of the world. I would also suggest that you read up on the so-called Spanish flu that hit the human race in 1918-19. An estimated 50,000,000 people world wide died, many more people than lost their lives in the First World War. Is this COVID 19 virus as dangerous as the one that caused the 1918 flu? Probably not but taking precautions is fully warranted.
As for this being no more dangerous than garden variety flu, you are wrong again. Data indicates that it is significantly more infectious, and that its 'kill rate' is in the order of 10 times higher. Lastly, 'just for fun' ferry rides should be not happening until this passes, which could be several months from now.

Okay, Enough...
I'm not trying to mini-moderate here, but I think that you, Jimmy, need to take a step back and think about what you are saying here.
COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease, and unprecedented action needs to be taken here and now, not necessarily to stop its spread, but to at least slow it. Maybe you personally are not at risk, but what needs to be remembered here is that countless people in this world are. The fact is COVID-19 is ten times deadlier than the regular flu, and even if you are not at high risk, if you do contract it you run the risk of passing the disease on to someone to whom it does pose serious danger.
I personally take issue with this comment- I think it is insensitive at best, and I don't see the reason that it had to be said.
There is evidence to suggest that there may have been a reservoir of COVID-19 in some food products that may seem alien to us, however, be careful- the way in which you phrased the above comment could be perceived as overly arrogant and borderline racist.
Besides, at this point, it doesn't matter that much where the virus originated from. The point is that, at this time, the virus is spreading and we need to take unprecedented and coordinated action to slow the spread.
I take particular issue with this; to put it bluntly, ADHD and Autism are not an excuse and you should not be using it as such. I get that these are challenges, and I make a point of trying to be respectful, but it isn't an excuse. If you are self-aware enough to to acknowledge that you should be controlling yourself, then, like, you should be controlling yourself.
===== Conclusion:
The COVID-19 Crisis is something unprecedented, and it needs to be taken seriously. We all need to come together and take appropriate precautions, and not get swept up in this idea that "It's a hoax" or that "It's not that big of a deal", because it most certainly is. And we need to recognize this fact and move forward in an appropriate, coordinated manner. This is not an opinion, this is science.

Now someone that works for Nintendo of America has tested positive for Covid-19. Here is more imformation about it from Spawn Wave.
It also mentions about how video games in general could be affected by the Coronavirus.

Despite this wretched disease, I may do a random on Wednesday. After all, real ferry geeks never stay inside! (unless there is an invitation to visit the wheelhouse, not that I would expect that with what's happening)

All:
I’ve made the decision to lock this thread. It is my view that the seriousness of this pandemic is not something that is worth debating. I understand that the measures taken by government bodies and agencies have significant impacts on our day to day lives, and even greater impacts on travel plans - I myself am in the process of canceling about $1200 of Amtrak fares, so I hear you.
Some folks who are on this forum (myself included) are in the public service, and are working under extreme circumstances to balance the ability to provide a service to those who rely on it, while also working to protect our most vulnerable. I therefore have this list of requests for members:
Don’t travel on the ferries unless you have to. Take social distancing seriously. While you yourself may not be impacted by COVID-19, you may be directly or indirectly putting someone’s health in substantial jeopardy. In all likelihood, someone you care about is in a position of significant risk at this time.
Respect the requests of government bodies and agencies, including BC Ferries. This is on an ongoing basis, but things are likely going to get tighter, and the number of cases of COVID-19 are forecasted to rise sharply. BCFS, as well as other agencies, are likely going to take further measures to curtail the spread of the virus. We can debate and evaluate the legitimacy of policy in less extreme times.
Don’t discount what the media tells you as “hype” or “overreaction”. If, at the end of this, we say that we overreacted, then we made all the right moves.
Thanks for being responsible ferry travellers and contributors.
