In a press release yesterday, a spokesperson for the Swedish Stena Line announced that the company had decided to stop their sailings between the Norwegian capital and the North Danish port city permamently and with immediate effect. The Coronavirus thus put an end to a 40 years long tradition, where the MS Stena Saga was the last in a long line of proud ferries to cross the Skagerrak Ocean on a daily basis. The Stena Saga, which was also a popular party vessel among day trippers, was virtually empty over the last weeks because people became afraid of contracting Covid-19 - and eventually also because of closed borders between Norway and Denmark - and Stena Line was facing a huge loss the next 6-12 months if they had continued the route. While all of Stena Line's 30 Norwegian employees are being terminated as a result, the Stena Saga lies tied up in Gothenburg while waiting to be sold, scrapped, refurbished or used on another route. An epoch with a familiar sight in the Oslo Fjord has now come to a sorry end. Photo credit: Drammens Tdende

I'm wondering about the odds of this ship sailing again. Its sister (EX MV Finlandia) is now sailing in the Mediterranean. But the Stena Saga (EX Silvia Regina) is close to 40 years old.

In 2011, the Stena Saga went through a major overhaul, so to the passengers, it appeared as almost new, with a 740 square meters spa facility, new kitchen and a 'duck tail', which reduced the fuel consuption with 4%.
Still, I haven't found out if this investment justifies further sailings for the old lady or what the owners have planned for her. Along with 14 of Stena Line's other vessels, the Saga has also been fitted with green solutions for land power, which eliminates the need to use the engines when docked.
I'll try to follow the development and return with any news that may surface.

Are there any updates on this possible project? This vessel could be a shared resource between the Nordic nations?
