CCGS Eckaloo (IMO #8712465) on the edge of the Beaufort Sea (Arctic Ocen) @ Tuktoyaktuk, NWT 18 July 2018 Apparently this vessel is/was used to ensure safe navigation along the Mackenzie River from Great Slave Lake right on down to the Arctic Coast. Each year navigational buoys & markers have to be reset after the ice goes out along the ever shifting channels of the big river. www.nauticapedia.ca/dbase/Query/Shiplist4.php?&name=Eckaloo%20(C.C.G.S.)%20(II)&id=4944

The markers are installed in the spring and removed in the fall, and then cached in safe locations along the river, otherwise they will be annihilated by the ice in the winter. You can easily find the caches on google earth. The Eckaloo and Dumit share the responsibility for the river; in general, one ship is responsible for the north half of the river, and the other responsible for the southern half. I believe the "divisional point" is Norman Wells. The ships are somewhat unique in the CCG fleet in that, as opposed to the normal 4 weeks on/4 off, they have one crew on board from spring breakup to freeze up, with up to 2 weeks leave in july/august. Leave is subject to relief availability.
Forum member "Quatchi" spent 3 months on the Eckaloo as a cadet a few years back.

If you're interested, I'm tracking the new Canadian Coast Guard ship Captain Jacques Cartier on my website at patbaywebcam.com/cartier.php. This ship is sailing from Victoria British Columbia, through the Panama canal, then to Dartmouth Nova Scotia. Tracking now includes: Full SAT AIS tracking, voyage days, distance, Speed Knots last/max/avg, wind and weather forecast for current position, and whenever possible I include timelapse videos of the ships going through the Panama Canal. As always, if you have suggestions/requests/ideas for changes, let me know and I'll see what I can do. You can either discuss it here or use my site contact form at Pat Bay Webcam Contact Form Previously I've tracked the Island Class ships, Salish ships (Orca, Eagle, and Raven), The Northern Seawolf, the Spirit of BC, and the Spirit of Vancouver. These transits are on the tracking archive page at patbaywebcam.com/tracking_archive.phptak

CCGS Sir John Franklin in Kitimat Harbour this afternoon - 11 February 2021. When I first saw this vessel this afternoon at about 3 PM I had no idea of why it was in Kitimat. I later checked 'Marine Traffic' and discovered that the RCMP vessel Inkster was also here. It was only after I returned home that I heard the sad news about a marine tragedy that took place during the night last night, not far from Kitimat*. Very sad, indeed!

Thanks Tak22 for keeping us posted. Great to get some positive shipping news these days. As the vessels are bound for Tahsis and Hartley Bay, I'm wondering who might be in charge of manning the vessel in Hartley Bay? Great to see new vessels being added to improve safety on our Pacific coast.

I've started consolidating some threads, and have now grouped separate threads about various coast guard ships into this one thread called Canadian Coast Guard. Anything to do with Canadian Coast Guard vessels should go here.

CCGS Provo Wallis (IMO 7006766) @ the Coast Guard base in the James Bay district of Victoria. This vessel spent most of its service years on the east coast before being moved to BC a few years before I took this photo. This vessel was decommissioned in 2011, I understand. The photo was taken from the deck of the ferry Coho while underway from Victoria Harbour for Port Angeles.
