We are pleased to announce that West Coast Ferries Forum will be receiving a makeover at the end of October. The purpose of this makeover is to stretch the beam of the forum from 960 to 1200 pixels. Because of this increase, the following changes will result: - Photos acceptable for posting to the forum will increase to a maximum of 1024 x 768.
- Signature images will increase to a maximum of 900 x 260.
- Forum Flagship entries will increase to a maximum of 1200 x 340. Photos posted to the thread will increase to a maximum of 1024 x 290.
The above dimensions will be effective immediately upon the forum going online at 9:30 PM, October 31st. All photos posted to the forum using these new dimensions prior to the wider implementation will be removed. However, Forum Flagship entries and their corresponding photos posted to the thread are exempt during the month of October. In order to implement these changes, the forum will be unavailable between 9:00 - 9:30 PM, October 31st. We feel "this is really like going from a Volkswagen to a Cadillac". ;D

I think that this will give the forum-viewers a whole new level of service. ;D
- Forum flagship participants will be pleased to know that the new ratio will make it easier to fit your photos into a banner format. A bit more vertical space.

I'm excited to hear this! ;D At the same time though I have to memorize the new pic dimensions. I'll appreciate the extra size to my photos and banners because I've felt 800 Pixels compresses them too much. This especially for my flagship banner preview images, perhaps I'm just nitpicking at my nominations but I always feel they don't have that 'edge' against the others because of their compressed size. Just thinking though, I assume this is more a Proboards limitation but why won't the avatar size change?

Well it's about time ;D
Finally, there will be a little less than 6 inches of blank space on either side of the forum. These are good changes, thanks, Scott.

Just thinking though, I assume this is more a Proboards limitation but why won't the avatar size change? If you look at the forum display now, it's the column area to the "right" of the member name/avatar that will be widening; ie the main viewing part of the threads. - so the member info column stays the same width. We want the new space used for the posting content.

Random thoughts...could a skin be added with a photo background, maybe faded out to avoid a busy screen? This would fill in the 'blank' areas for those of us with the ability to have high resolutions while maintaining the readability for those of us with low resolutions.
More random thoughts...don't curse me too loudly Scott ;D ...maybe this skin could be another option for a monthly contest.

Doing a skin photo contest monthly would be a bit much in my opinion, as some flagship contests as it is only get around 10 entries, so this would further reduce people's time they could spend on the flagship contest, and we'd have slim pickings on both contests. Maybe a contest twice annually, and have an easy flagship topic that month, so we naturally get more entries?

While I like the idea, I just don't think much of a background image will show through when the width is increased to 1200 pixels, even for those with high resolution screens. However, I will do some tests in our test forum to see how this might look if implemented.

Cool, because 1920 pixels wide is likely to be a common res soon (1080p), and even on my laptop, I'm running 1600 pixels wide. These higher resolution are becoming more the norm as people are starting think 21 inch monitors are the minimum.

As part of this upgrade, is there any plan to change the 'rules' on acceptable dimensions for signature photos?

14 days until the forum goes to the shipyard for a beam-widening. ...As for me, I've now got plenty of my photos resized and ready to go for the new forum beam.

Fabulous! I just went and made sure my November Signature pic meets the new size criteria (900x260), and, while I was at it, I decided to do a little house cleaning, and so I have closed down my Photobucket account and PBase Account. I am now doing everything through Flickr. So, that meant I got to go and update links this afternoon, most critically the links to my current sig pic and avatar, as well as my submission for November's flagship.

I take it that the maximum size for avatar pics will remain at 100x100? I think going a little larger, say 150x150, is doable an will not interfere with the planned maximum width for that member info area on the left side.

We will also be making a small change on the BCFerries side of the forum. - formally identifying the various ship-specific photo threads as "Photos & Discussion".
For practical purposes, showing a photo and discussing some aspect of that ship shouldn't be separated, and by making it clear that photos-and-discussion go together, this should allow for easier discussion of a ship's issue and better allow a photo to inspire some discussion. - This is similar to what is done on the Alaska page, the Washington page, the Other-BC page and the Retired-ferries page.
We'll of course keep the General-page for all those other types of threads that we have. We have a fair bit of discussion that can't be isolated to 1 specific ship, so that's why we have a well-used General board for BCF topics.
Changes to happen over the next couple of days...
