The latest developments with the Walla Walla indicate - according to the Kitsap Sun - that the Rhody may be brought back into service. Field trip! To where? Eagle Harbor or Point Defiance/Talequah? And say that I saw her yesterday and that wasn't doubting that she could possibly be put back to service...nor of the Walla Walla's incident...

To where? Eagle Harbor or Point Defiance/Talequah? Point Def, if they break her out. I'm not saying it will happen, but the Nisqually made one last triumphant return in 2007...

Also, as of yesterday the life rafts of the Rhody were removed: That means that a little amount of work would have to be done in order for her to go back to work...

Reinstalling the inflatable evacuation slides would take about a half-day, if that.

Where's the source of the auction of the RHODY? Is it online? Or, is it in the classified ads?

Time to unretire the RHODY and put her back on the Tahlequah run. Let the CHETZEMOKA do filler trips where needed in the Evergreen Fleet. That's if WSF can't lease the CHRISTINE ANDERSON from Pierce County and give them the HIYU. BTW, where's the source of the auction of the RHODY? Is it online? Or, is it in the classified ads? It looks like our great moderators of this forum may be switching this thread back to the active WSF fleet for awhile. www.publicsurplus.com/sms/state,wa/auction/view?auc=817309

As for the Hiyu, I don't see why the state holds onto it. It's a joke for a ferry. At the very minimum, a backup boat should be no smaller than a KDT with a 16-knot speed. The Hiyu is woefully inadequate in terms of size and speed.

Would Washington state ferries bring back the Rhododendron to operate on the Point Defiance to Tahlequah to replace the Chetzemoka? For the Chetzemoka to go operate on a different route to the Walla Walla is back in service.

Would Washington state ferries bring back the Rhododendron to operate on the Point Defiance to Tahlequah to replace the Chetzemoka? Yes, because she's very restricted to where she can operate. The only other routes that she can be placed on are Vashon-Southworth, San Juan Inter island (but she's probably too narrow) and maybe Mukilteo-Clinton (need confirmation for that one).

I'd vote for the Rhody as San Juan Islands Interisland vessel.
We can dream, right?

That's if WSF can't lease the CHRISTINE ANDERSON from Pierce County and give them the HIYU. Leave Pierce County out of this. The Christine Anderson wouldn't be of more use to WSF than the Rhododendron, so we might as well use our own boat. I think the Rhody would be best utilized as a standby boat to fill in at Pt. Def, relieving the Chetzemoka for possible inter-island duty, breaking loose the Evergreen State so a relief boat of some size (if not speed) is available. Probably down to Vashon Head, relieve the Issaquah-class vessel there... this is looking as fun as when the Hood Canal Bridge went down!

Rhody has been auctioned off. (assuming the check etc clears) www.kitsapsun.com/news/2012/nov/22/state-auctions-off-48-car-rhododendron-ferry/The article also contains additional info on expenses involved in restoring her for service. For example the security system was already ripped out, the COI expires in Jan and she'd need to be inspected etc... As usual Seaquist has something to say about things also.

I wonder what kind of work would be needed that would cost this much. Would this include the reinstallation of the items that were removed or is this separate from that?

I was thinking about that too. I'm thinking that was a misqoute by the author or they didn't provide the proper context. i.e. if they wanted to keep her for longer. If it wasn't for some longer period of time than a year perhaps there's supposed to be a decimal there?

Now we are officially down two boats from 2007. Soon as the new 144 is brought on, out goes either the Evergreeen or the Hiyu. Looks to me that the State is wearing rose colored glasses and doesn't believe we will ever have a boat failure, even though we are in the midst of one. I guess any failure would be "unusual and unexpected".

While WSF may have "officially" had 24 automobile ferries under their ownership in 2007 as a practical matter they had a 22 boat fleet, the same as they have now.
The Nisqually was out of service from 2003 to 2007. And the Hiyu didn't carry a passenger from 1997 to 2007. The self-inflicted steel-electric crisis caused the state to send the Hiyu into the yard for $500,000 worth of work and she has been in active standby status ever since. She even made a few trips at Whidbey on her way to the San Juan's a year or two ago.
When the first two new144s arrive the Hiyu and the Evergreen State are slated to be retired. The official plan is to put one of the newer Evergreens in standby status. However, I'll bet we find an evergreen working the triangle route, as the interisland boat or at Tahlequah quite often.
That will leave a Super or a tub toy in standby. They will have the speed to work anywhere. The tub toy will at least free up a more useful boat and the super will have adequate auto and passenger capacity for most any run. And when one of either class is tied to the dock WSF will be saving money.
It would be nice to see the Rhody in service with Argosy. Perhaps that will come about. She would be a nice addition to Lake Washington. And if she keeps her COI she could get leased back to WSF during their next crisis.
What is a 48 car ferry worth in a pinch? Let's start the bidding at $300,000.

And now every serious buyer knows it "needs $12M worth of work." Way to go, guys.

I've been following vessel watch since the Sealth went out of service Yesterday.
The Salish is running behind schedule on the Seattle-Bremerton run with the Kitsap and Edmonds-Kingston is below capacity with the Spokane and the Kaleetan. On Monday the Issaquah will swap with the Salish at Bremerton and F/V/S. If you have to get on or off of the Kitsap Peninsula it is going to be a tough month until a fourth Jumbo gets back in service.
Reactivating the Rhody and freeing up the Chetzemoka to work as a third boat at Bremerton or Kingston is sure looking good right now.

The other option would be putting Hiyu on Point Defiance, and moving Chetzy up to Bremerton as you suggested. People commuting off the south of Vashon would hate it, but the situation is almost to the point of "desperate".
