=============== Attention Northern Commercial Customers Posted February 15, 2008 Changes to Reefer Configurations on New Vessel
In 2009, BC Ferries will be welcoming the Northern Expedition into service on the Port Hardy – Prince Rupert route. The vessel, at a length of 150.75 metres and AEQ capacity of 130, will offer a state-of-the art travel experience to our northern customers. The vessel will replace the Queen of Prince Rupert, which will be retired after 43 years of service.
Of particular interest to our commercial customers is the configuration of the reefer systems on the new vessel. Currently, the Northern Adventure has eighteen diesel/gas reefer exhaust units. In addition to the diesel/gas units, there are fourteen electrical connections. The Queen of Prince Rupert currently has a total carrying capacity of 20 diesel/gas driven refrigeration plants.
The Northern Expedition will have a total carrying capacity of 26 reefers; of which four will be diesel/gas driven refrigeration plants. In addition to the gas/diesel drive units, the vessel will have 22 electrical connections for use by our commercial customers. The switch from gas/diesel to electric units is being made for the following reasons:
· Environment: electrical units cause less air and noise pollution;
· Safety: electrical units pose a smaller fire risk, thus lessening the safety risk to our passengers, crew and vessel;
· Safety: electrical units pose less of an injury risk to our employees.
As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment, BC Ferries is reducing its dependency on diesel/gas reefer units and will ultimately eliminate them from usage and operate 100% electric reefer units.
BC Ferries looks forward to working with its northern commercial customers in the coming months and years. ========================

(and here's the alternate take) =========================== Attention Northern West Coast Customers Posted February 15, 2008 Changes to Reefer Configurations on New Vessel
Of particular interest to our west coast customers is the configuration of the reefer systems on the new vessel. Currently, he Northern Adventure has eighteen bongs. In addition to the bongs, there are zigzag rolling stations. The Queen of Prince Rupert currently has a total capacity of 20 zigzag rolling stations.
The Northern Expedition will have a total capacity of 26 reefers; of which four will be zigzag rolling stations. In addition to the zigzag stations, the vessel will have 22 bongs for use by our west coast customers. The switch from zigzag rolling paper to bongs is being made for the following reasons:
· Environment: bongs have less of an impact on the environment, as they do not use paper;
· Safety: bongs pose a smaller fire risk, thus lessening the safety risk to our passengers, crew and vessel;
· Safety: bongs pose less of an injury risk to our employees.
As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment, BC Ferries is reducing its dependency on zigzag rolling paper reefers and will ultimately eliminate them from usage and operate 100% bong reefer units.

Alright, so does anyone know what will happen for sure after March 31st? I'm thinking the Coastal Inspiration won't be here until mid to late March, leaving very little time for crew familiarization/final touches on the ship. After looking at the Queen of New Westminster last week, I'm having my doubts she would be ready by the end of March. But anything can happen between now and a little over a month from now. The Queen of Coquitlam will be stuck subbing in for the Queen of Oak Bay while she's out for annual maintenance. So if the Coastal Inspiration isn't ready to go by March 31st, perhaps the Queen of Esquimalt will have to stick around on the route. But unless they wanted to restore regular service without a modified schedule with having the Queen of Cowichan take over.

I agree with you, Chris. Although they have gallery decks which reduces overheight capacity, I would concur that they should have a faster running ferry on the route, such as the available Cowichan for April. However, their schedule for April still shows Route 30 having a slower ferry on the run. The only difference between this and March is that the Saturday evening trips are added for April. I still see signs pointing to the CI starting on Route 30 at the beginning of May, which makes sense allowing a month or so to get her ready for service after arriving in BC.

I think that the reason that they have just posted the schedule until the end of March/08 is just to get them through this season (as you stated, with the Saturday PM trips returning). It also buys them some time by getting the current schedule out to the travelling public, and allows them to do whatever they have to do behind the scenes. It buys them another month to see how the refits go (which we all know can run long if there are snags with the maintenance, or if they find more things wrong once they get into it). Realistically though, the venerable Esquimalt will continue to be the Rte-30 boat for the time being. I would not be surprised to see her remain on Rte-30 until the CI is ready to assume her position.

Actually, after having been watching the Siitech website over the past few days, she's no longer showing up at Deas. Maybe someone near the Deas area is able to see whether or not the QPR is actually still there, because the GPS might have just been turned off? I don't know where else she could go, unless she's in the drydock.

I was boarding the 1pm ferry from swartz bay yesterday and the loading for the vessel, Queen of Vancouver was delayed by a police incident. Took around 20 mins to resolve, couldn't load the main car deck, cops arrested someone who was drunk i believe.

Service Notices - Campbell River-Quadra Island
Temporary Replacement Vessel Posted February 25, 2008
Beginning Saturday, March 1 with the 6:15 a.m. sailing from Quadra Island, the MV Bowen Queen will replace the MV Powell River Queen, which is being removed from service to undergo necessary work to replace the car deck. This work is expected to be completed by June 20.
Due to the limited over height capacity of the MV Bowen Queen, commercial operators need to plan their travels accordingly.
BC Ferries thanks you for your patience and looks forward to the return of the MV Powell River Queen _______________________________________________
This will be the second time this year (since Sept) that the Bowen Queen will have replaced the Powell River Queen. She had her regular refit back in the fall, prior to the Quinsam's refit period. I guess this means that the Bowen Queen will not be having a refit period this year.

Service Notices - Duke Point-Tsawwassen
Schedule Change Posted February 25, 2008
Duke Point – Tsawwassen customers are advised that effective Sunday, March 9 to Monday March 31, 2008, the following schedule will be in effect:
Leave Tsawwassen (upper line): Leave Duke Point (lower line): Except Sundays 5:15 a.m. Except Sundays 5:15 a.m. * Except Sundays 7:45 a.m. * Except Sundays 7:45 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m.* 12:45 p.m.* 12:45 p.m. 3:15 p.m. 3:15 p.m. * 5:45 p.m. * 5:45 p.m. Except Saturdays 8:15 p.m. Except Saturdays 8:15 p.m. * Except Saturdays 10:45 p.m. * Except Saturdays 10:45 p.m.
* Queen of Cowichan Sailings
During this period, the Queen of Cowichan and Queen of Alberni will be operating on the Duke Point – Tsawwassen route.
Commercial operators: please note that due to a different deck configuration, the Queen of Cowichan carries fewer commercial vehicles than the Queen of Esquimalt. Customers are advised to plan their travels accordingly. ________________________________________________
Does this mean that the MV Coastal Renaissance will enter service on Sunday, March 9 (or perhaps earlier)? It makes sense that the Cowichan begins service on a Sunday, as it gives sufficient extra time to make the vessel switch due to no Sat evening and no Sun early am sailings. I think this will lead to an additional service notice or news release stating the start of service for the CR!
This will also eliminate the service notice for ship re-deployment from Feb18. Well, I guess not exactly. . .it will be in effect for a whopping 1 week! ;D
EDIT: After looking on the reservations page, it appears the MV Coastal Renaissance is scheduled to start service with the 3pm sailing from Departure Bay on Saturday, March 8.
