Last night, I was advised by a PM of someone who has copied/pasted my entire posting of photos of the Queen of Esquimalt retirement ceremony. Text and photos, it's all the same. There are even a few other members photos included there. The purpose of posting images on this forum, is to share them with everyone. But if people are going to start taking credit for other peoples work, with out advising the creator, then there's going to be some problems. I will be changing the links to all of those photos tonight, to photos that will have a copyright stamp and my name on it. This is what I'll do for now on. To Mr. ALEC BALD ONE,
You have just proven that you follow this forum closely as a lurker. I'd ask that you pay some respect to peoples hard work, and not take credit for what is not yours. If you wanted to borrow a few images, you could have asked me via a PM, and I would have accepted that. But for someone to come out and advise me someone has STOLEN my photos, really upsets me. Please, either delete your blog posting, or modify it to credit those who actually deserve the credit
Thank you, -Chris Cornwell PS: If anyone would like to see an example of what NOT to do, have a look at this. Please be advised, there is some very graphic material on this page. blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=157088588&MyToken=e0a6b456-2c51-49e8-9f0b-06085267

I belong to a couple of pro-boards forums. I'd rather not say which ones, but on those forums, picture theft was quite rampant and people were getting very ticked off that their pictures were showing up all over the net. People were claiming the work as their own, when it wasn't. The owners of some of the pictures would contact the administrator of the web sites and ask that the pictures be removed. This was successful for some pictures. The owner of the specific ProBoards, had to eventually make a special photo thread for members only, accessible by password only. (The admins decided who would get the passwords and then the passwords were Pm's to who who qualified for them)
The Queen of Esquimalt Pictures were really great to look at, my Dad helped build that boat and it brought back memories of when she was new. I remember riding on her when she was new. Chris you can be proud of your photos.
I do enjoy looking at all the photos, that are posted on this forum. People should be proud of their photos. I think that the regulars on this forum are a really great group.

Even I'd be pissed if I find my photos in the wrong hands. Chris, I am pissed to see your photos in the wrong hands. I certainly hope those get taken down and any others as well.

"Wrong hands" is an understatement re this "Biff" character who stole Chris's photos.
One read of his blog will turn your stomach; at least it did to me. Biff seems to be consumed by hatred; or at least that's what's being expressed in his blog. And it's pretty disturbing to read.
So that's the makeup of the individual that has copied/pasted Chris's pictures onto his Blog. So as much as I am angry about Chris having his photo's stolen, I think that this character has far more worse problems to deal with than copyright.
So I don't think that "Biff" will really care about this issue. That's just my take on it. That doesn't make it right, but I don't think the guy will really care. But good on Chris for speaking up. Once "Biff" gets back on his meds, maybe he'll feel some remorse and stop photo-stealing.

I have also had my photos stolen from that ass Biff so it pisses me off too that Chris's photos are being used without his permission. I cant get onto Biff's photobucket site now as it is set to private so who knows how many more peoples photos he has stolen. I dont know who this guy who stole Chris's photos is but it is wrong and he should of asked permission!

First off, what a strange thing to copy, I'm at a loss. Why copy pictures of a retired ferry that only people on this forum will even know about. Also, it is very disrespectful to Chris who spent a lot of time and effort to take those pictures for us to enjoy. I kind of see it as a slap in the face for the Queen of Esquimalt too because after 45 years of service as we are saying goodbye to a great ship someone goes out and wrecks it. Hopefully this will all get resolved.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but I noticed that Sean's signature picture was also placed into that blog post.
It's really sad to see something like this happen, and I agree with what Canucks said.
Chris, good on you for copyrighting your images, and acting upon this so quickly.

Thanks for the support, everyone!
I knew I would someday find Photobuckets recent massive upgrade to work to my advantage......They provide an "Edit Image" setting, allowing me to add in a text, which saves me from deleting the image, writing in a text on Paint, and then re-uploading it. I'm still in the process of editing each image, and you can already start to see the images starting to show my added in text. Now, have a look! ;D
PS to Esquimalt Queen and Queen of Nanaimo Teen, your images are in there, so I'd advise you to take action as well. We can all bring him down together.

I think it might be time for a Moderator to make the photo section's of the forum members only I don't think so. Just because a couple of unscrupulous nut cakes copy the works of our members, the photos should not be limited to viewing by members only. Most (if not all) of the entries are of superior quality and should be available to all members of the general public for viewing. Those who see and copy these works should, at least, acknowledge the source and authors of these works. We can't control the lack of ethics by a very few members of the INTERNET. EDIT I see that as I was composing my last message that such action was taken. Please reconsider this decision.

Hmm.. tough situation. I am not too interested in "ganging up" on this guy, but if you guys want to take some action that would be fine.
If he would have asked me, I would have been perfectly ok with it!
Also, I think that blocking the photo section is taking it too far. I think that it is a great space to showcase our photos for the public to see. I think we are being a little tooooo paranoid. Abd I mean, if we keep this kind of attitude up, nobody else is going to want to join the forum!
Anyways, thats my 2 cents..... Sean

This person by the name Alec Bald One I am pretty sure is Biff. If you click on his name on that page which I am not advising you to do takes you to another page with that horrible background of you know what in a toilet. The same photo as Biff has. So yeah I am pretty sure that is who it is.

EDIT I see that as I was composing my last message that such action was taken. Please reconsider this decision. You know, I was thinking about this, when it struck me: This is why most of us have links to our sites. For me, I only post about 6 or 7 images documenting a trip, tops, the rest go on my Flickr website. If the public wants to see MY pictures, they can go to the website I operate and pay for. For those out there who do not have photo websites, even stuff like Facebook public albums work, Photobucket, Webshots, and other photo hosting sites.

In the long run, what stops a non-member (guest) from registering here and then stealing photos? The measure that has been taken should only be a temporary thing as was the suspension of non-members from posting on this board. A similar warning should be posted on the page where a photograph is, just like one hears on the CBC telecasts:Any reproduction, exhibition, distribution, and\or retransmission without the express written consent of the original poster\photographer is [glow=red,2,300]strictly prohibited! [/glow]As a further deterent, violators will be prosecuted and\or terminated from this board.

Yes, this is only a temporary measure.
We realize the fact that a non-member may consider registering for the purpose of stealing photos. However there is a plus side in terms of action that we could take against someone if they were to go about it that way...

Some of my photos have been 'borrowed' without my persion also. One way to deter this would be to do what Kevin Stapleton does on some of his photos, such as... i.pbase.com/g4/45/387545/2/62027803.K0J7Mi2a.jpgWhile this detracts from the photo, it would be quite effective in stopping theft.

It is a pee pee off that people would steal pictures and put it on thier own web site. This happend to me before when I first started sharing my photos in public. As a result I decided that when I got rid of my old computer and moved a couple years ago that I would delete all of my old pictures for the time been.
I had posted on Fotopic. net lots of pictures I scanned from my 35 mm film taken of the pre-midllifes on the Queen of New West, Oak Bay, Alberni, etc. I was intending on uploading them again but I just don't have the time, this is my sisters computer and I can not use the computer as I wish. There for I can only upload pictures with my didgital camera.
So I offer my support and sympathy to those affected by what just happend.
Hey, look at how proboards spelled Pssed ! (Pee Pee off)

I would suggest that people who are concerned about their photos being stolen should "watermark" or somehow mark on the photo that it is theirs. Even a simple text of the photographer's name or website would probably work. While someone could still try and edit out the writing or "watermark", it's time consuming and would likely deter most stupid, untalented troublemakers.

I would contact MySpace and tell them that that person is hosting copyrighted material and you own the rights to it. They will remove it.

A little info for you all. When you post pictures on facebook you are handing over your rights to those pictures. They take over the copyright to them
Moderator Note:
Thanks for that information, Kyle.

They take over the copyright to them It'll only be a matter of time before facebook gets their backside sued off over something like that. I realized that from the beginning though and I've only ever posted one photo on facebook, and they may say that they reserve property rights but I wonder how well that would really stand up to a challenge under international copyright or intellectual property laws.
