The "Ice Class" - which we are talking about here - with regards to the fleet of vessel BC Ferries has - is more to "say" that the hulls are or have been strengthen for log hit's. Given that a majority of our hulls - vessels are around the 30 year mark - and very little in design change has or happen over those last 40 years or so - we can then see the strength of the Hull - but with that is additional weight.
Kerry -
Interesting comment - but if that compartment was flooded - then surely a water ingress sensor would have sounded - either on the bridge or engine room. I would think that a smoke / fire sensor and a water sensor would have been fitted to each compartment on her. Did she have a GA on the bridge and engine room showing the different compartments and there alarm systems? If they have alarms - sensor - then did they turn them off ? - like it appears they did on the Queen of the North. In your experience were the alarm system faulty - always going off - or did they not even have sensors for water - fire?
