According to the Northern tracker she never seemed to be doing more than 10 or 11 knots during her crossing of Hecate Strait.
I know that the NE is not making her official debut Until the 18th but could she be pushed int to service early if the Nor Ad's problem is serious?

The Burnaby seems to be back for good. Hopefully they actually fixed whatever the problem was, rather than just rushing her back into service without completely resolving the issue. We don't have any spare boats for the summer, so reliability is going to be crucial. www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=107333

We don't have any spare boats for the summer, so reliability is going to be crucial. Just to be curious troublemaker, here's me hoping that either the 'Burnaby or the 'Nanaimo breaks-down sometime this summer, for approx 10 days. I'd like to see what happens with a B-NewWest shuffle to fill the gap at Comox or Route 9. It would be interesting to see what happens.... ;D ps: Route 40 Discovery Coast service starts Tuesday June 9th. Maybe the 'Burnaby isn't really ready and all well. Maybe it's just that she's going back to Comox because they've run out of time?

I think that if the Burnaby breaks down, BCF will simply cancel sailings. The run doesn't come close to making money, and it would be very difficult to cover the run with another ship.
If the Nanaimo has trouble, I don't know what they would do. It's possible they will cancel sailings on route 9, but that would be much more dangerous, on a PR level, than canceling trips on route 17. I don't know if we would see a New West shuffle in there... as she will be running full time on a profitable run.

Seems to me the situation is pretty much the same as it's been for quite a number of summers; the number of medium and major vessels is just the same. No 'spares' is normal.

I believe service on route 9 has been cancelled during the peak season ie: July/August before (most recently in 2007?) BCF simply advises passengers to travel via Swartz Bay. I think that since there are almost hourly sailings on route 1 most days, and several sailings on routes 5/5A, it's preferable for them to suspend sailings on that route as opposed to route 17. However, the sadist in me WOULD like to see either the Nanaimo or Burnaby have a few problems over the summer just so I can sit back and watch it all unfold...is that wrong? ;D

I agree with you guys, it would be fun to see what happens I guess the Tachek and Nimpkish could do a shuttle between Powell River and Comox - they're both based at Blubber Bay (at least they used to be). Not sure if BC Ferries would go to the trouble... I'd consider taking a special trip just to see that!

....However, the sadist in me WOULD like to see either the Nanaimo or Burnaby have a few problems over the summer just so I can sit back and watch it all unfold...is that wrong? ;D Well... considering the negative effect it would have on Gulf Islands businesses that depend on the busiest season for so much of their livelihood, not to mention Powell River people who need to get to medical appointments in the Courtenay area, it would probably be best if we didn't get the opportunity to satisfy our curiosity... BC Ferries has demonstrated in the past that route 9 is not considered essential, so if the ' Nanaimo was out for any length of time, the Bowen Queen would be it, plus maybe the Tachek, if they were feeling really conscientious. If the ' Burnaby goes on the fritz, and they considered that route essential- which presumably they would- then the trusty Bowen' would probably be the relief boat. John's suggestion might also be a possibility, but that only gives a capacity of 46, and uses two crews. A slightly longer shot would be to rent a couple of WSF's mothballed steel electrics, fill the hulls full of pool noodles to keep them afloat, and tow them back and forth with tugs. Heck, it worked with the old Smokwa. (Minus the pool noodles.)

AM730 reported that BC Ferries cancelled the Coastal Inspiration's 5:15 and 7:45 runs this morning due to an issue with the brake on the davit for the rescue boat. They stated the Queen of Cowichan would be put in on the 10:15 from Duke Point.

Service Notice - Tenaka Refit July 15th - early September Posted Tuesday, July 7, 2009 Print Version Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Cortes Island(Whaletown) - Quadra Island (Heriot Bay) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MV Tenaka Refit July 15th –early September Quadra Island – Cortes Island Please be advised that on Wednesday July 15th, the MV Tenaka will be removed from service to undergo a scheduled refit. During this time the MV Tachek will be the replacement vessel for sailings between Quadra Island and Cortes Island. As the MV Tachek has a slightly larger capacity and is capable of the same speed, there will be no changes to the sailing schedule. BC Ferries looks forward to welcoming the MV Tenaka back to service in early September. Current sailing information is available at www.bcferries.com. For personalized service, reservations or recorded information call toll free 1-888-BC FERRY (223-3779). doesn't the Nimpkish usually replace the Tenaka?

Yeah that's a little different than usual. The Nimpkish does usually replace the Tenaka. I guess since the Tachek has nothing better to do for the summer, and isn't as crammed as the Nimpkish, it actually makes perfect sense.

The fact that the Nimpkish is also equipped with the stern ramp for the Mid Coast probably doesn't make it a suitable replacement. When you have a spare ferry like the Tachek around, there's no point sacrificing vehicle capacity on a route, especially in the summer when it's needed. You could almost think that the Cortes run could use both a T Class AND the Nimpkish on busy summer days.
The Tenaka is due for a refit too. I can't remember the last time she was pulled out of service for one. It must be nice to have a spare minor vessel in the summer.
Speaking of spare vessels, when will the Klitsa get some action? I have wondered if she would be a help on summer weekends on the Chemainus or Denman routes. I don't know actual service levels on summer weekends for those routes, but would think that a 2nd ferry might come in handy once in a while.
