Looks like MV Quinault might be heading to the Islands this afternoon. She has been spotted on the WSF Vessel Watch heanding north of the Keystone landing. Welcome back MV Quinault .

Thanks for that, FerryNutSeattle.
I've been trying to keep track of the Illahee via Whidbey Island and Seattle Area Vessel Watches, but no luck so far.

I have a question about the Q-boat. It concerns her usage as a replacement for the Klick during maintenence periods. It seems as though the Quinault has a hard time keeping with the schedule. The weather is turning for the better now so I know there is more traffic, but she seems to take longer to complete her schedule. Even when she is paired with the Klickitat during the summer, she lags behind most of the time. I have my guesses why she is slower, but I would like a more informed opinion to this query.

When I rode her on the Edmonds route she seemed pretty slow, even compared to the Evergreen State. I even heard one passenger comment on how slow she was.

Now that Q-boat has been replaced on the Pt. Townsend run, will she be scheduled for maintenence, scheduled for duty in the Islands to replace the E-State on the Inter-Island run, or the only boat held in reserve in case another boat has a problem?

Took some pics of the Evergreen coming into Friday Harbor at about 5:15pm tonight, might be the last time she is there. Eh, I think it will be a few years yet before the old girl goes cold iron for good. We still don't actually have a construction deal for the new ferries, and nobody is getting the heave-ho before then. You'll note that if we had to fire up the mighty Hiyu Maru, we've used every other piece in the arsenal, so we can't spare any boats yet. In fact I do suspect any plans to dispose of the Hiyu have been quietly discarded until at least 2009... if they don't change their mind and turn her into the Southworth shuttle after all.

IN the past two years, the Evergreen has been the savior of many a commuter's day. She is a great boat.

Absolutely! We who work the boats have been saying for several years now, "y'know, for what the state calls an 'old and unreliable' boat, she sure does manage to answer the bell an awful lot."

I am willing to be that most people who say that she is unreliable have never set foot onboard any of the boats. They simply look at some numbers and make false conclusions.

The Evergreen State was 'mothballed' in 2001, allegedly because of her age and unreliability--so the office told us. She hasn't hardly spent two consecutive months in Eagle Harbor since.

*pfft* So much for unreliable, she's been put to some good work and helping out when needed. Especially in the crisis of the Elwha MIA case. In fact, she might be used as Bremerton's 3rd boat. That'd be a site for me since that would only be the second time in the last decade she has been put on the Bremerton run?

Well even the "iron horse" has to falter on occasion. Out of all of the Steels, I think the Q-boat is probably the most reliable WSF has got.
She seems to answer the call at PT. Townsend, San Juans, and PT. Defiance whenever they need her. I think she is in need of a little TLC. It just comes at a very bad time.
Maybe they should have left the E-State in the Islands a little longer.

Maybe they should have left the E-State in the Islands a little longer. While my favorite, and probably the Steel E in the best shape, she needs to be retired, period. As do all the Steel Electrics. You're going to see this kind of problem cropping up more and more as time goes on...you can give those boats all the TLC you want and you're still left with 80 year old, riveted hulls with 50 year old welded sponsons. They're going to be steady money drains for WSF until they're replaced...hopefully they're realizing they're going to end up building "boats to order" for the Keystone run, since the idea of any kind of new dock there is completely dead.

How long do they think that the Steels are going to last? If they are going to keep 2 boats for the Pt. Townsend/Keystone run, then they better keep the other two at Eagle Harbor for parts. Anyway, if they are not going to build new terminals, when can they build route specific new ferries? Another question. Isn't the State trying to move the fleet towards standardization? Building two new ferries just for that route going against policy? I think all sides need to come to the table and rehash this subject again until a realistic plan can be developed.

Well, I suppose two route-specific vessels would actually indicate a concession that not all routes are standard, either.
At any rate, WSF needs to get the new boats for the route running as soon as possible; moreover, while we're at it, perhaps funding for a fifth and sixth vessel should be heavily considered, too.
