Regarding the bow door bolts:
I'm wondering if that was the Cowichan this morning. As I was taking wave action photos from the upper car deck, I got talking to another passenger who just came up from the main car deck saying there was crew members trying to secure the bow doors. I didn't really pay much attention to it, because I didn't ever think that would have been an issue. But those waves would have definitely been putting some stress on those doors. But like I said, I'm really curious to know if that was in fact the Cowichan.

The photo of the NIP reminds me of some trips I took aboard her as a kid. It's no wonder the Islanders love her so much...there's little that will stop her from making the crossing.

The locking dogs are woefully under sized and even tho we always chained the doors in heavy weather, I've seen those chains just snap. I wonder if she was on a weather course when this happened.

Alright, its been confirmed that it was in fact the Coquitlam that had to turn around due to the bow doors beginning to fail. Also on the topic of damages to the Ferries from that storm, the Alberni had a window stove in at the cafeteria. Plus I already mentioned the damaged dog kennel on the Cowichan of course. But isn't it a little ironic how all of the 1976 C-Class sisters were the ones who were damaged?

Service Notice - M.V. Quinsam Major Vessel Upgrade Update Posted Wednesday, April 14, 2010 Print Version Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Nanaimo Harbour - Gabriola Island (Descanso Bay)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
April 14, 2010
MV QUINSAM MAJOR VESSEL UPGRADE UPDATE
The Quinsam has just undergone the second half of a major $16 million vessel upgrade and BC Ferries is finishing off work on this major project.
The ship was originally scheduled to resume service on the Nanaimo Harbour – Gabriola Island route mid-April, however the project has been extended by four weeks.
BC Ferries is working with the engine manufacturer to make some adjustments to the pitch of the propellers and alterations to the Right Angle Drive (RAD) units. In addition, BC Ferries also needs more time to familiarize the crew on all the new systems.
BC Ferries expects the Quinsam to return to service on the Gabriola route during the week of May 17. In the meantime, the Bowen Queen will continue to service the Gabriola Island route.

According to A-Channel news tonight, the Quinsam hit the seawall at Cameron Island, next to the Nanaimo harbour terminal, this morning.
Then after that, she had an unrelated mechanical problem that caused her to miss some round-trips.

I was down at Cameron Island Yesturday Morning to get my first good look at the Quinsam since she returned and took a video of the ship arriving and of the damaged to the Cameron Island pomenade casused by the ship last saturday. It is very easy to understand how she could run into the shore since she heads directly for it before turning into her berth. BC Ferries are lucky The Sam was not running at full speed at the time. I was in Horseshoe Bay this afternoon and they had the Horseshoe Bay maintenance boat and the Coquitlam's rescue boat out doing boom duty to contain the leak.

Coquitlam is still useable....Just break out the Oars and use some of the passengers to paddle the ship back and forth. Hey, At least it would cut down on fuel costs. Its always something to do with the Gears when a C-class breaks down.

This is becoming a trend lately, Summer is almost here and we're running out of C Class Vessels. Where's the Vancouver Saanich and Esquimalt when you need them now?

BCFS appears to be having what can only be described as 'an awful day on routes 2 & 3. One C-class is still in the shop (Surrey) and three others are ailing. A Super C (Renaissance) is also running way behind schedule. What is going on?

How many times did I say we should've kept the Saanich? GAWSH. I guess BC Ferries deserves it for thinking they could run all their routes smooth-as-cream with barely enough vessels as it is. Unless they have at least one surplus vessel, which they currently don't, that afore-mentioned cream curdles very quickly... It's not too late to take back the Esquimalt, is it? It doesn't seem that she's ever going to leave Port Alberni... If they get really desperate they could always buy back the Queen of Sidney and give her a 20 kajillion dollar refit... or they could get a lease on the Tsawwassen for awhile.... What happened to the Saanich, anyway? Wasn't she last seen anchored somewhere on the central coast ??
