Queen of Nanaimo arriving at Long Harbour, Salt Spring Island, where a fresh crew awaits - 9 September 2016. The berth here at Long Harbour is another (excellent) example of a berth built to facilitate the berthing of single-ended ferries like the 'Nanny' via their tail ends. Nevertheless, next spring double ended vessels will take over and the 'Nanny' will be gone. Any ideas as to how the new boats will be operated in & out of Long Harbour? Maybe we will see operations similar to what some of us have seen at Balfour on Kootenay Lake with the Osprey 2000. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

The new gen of ships will bring new operational challenges.....

The new gen of ships will bring new operational challenges.....I will agree with you only to the extent that the Long Harbour berth was not built for ships the size of the Nanny, but it most certainly was built to accommodate single-ended vessels of which the Queen of the Islands & the Nanny are examples. In fact, with the exception of the summer supplementary service provided by the Bowen Queen, this route has always been served by single-enders. My point is (was) that these berths that were designed to accommodate single-enders docking via their sterns are not ideal for use with true double-enders such as the Salish class ships soon to be in service on this route.

Same issue with the double-ended ship's inefficient approach to Balfour terminal (as you've already said) and with berth #1 at Langdale. ....and with the seldom used second berth at Clinton, on south end of Whidbey Island. ...and same thing eventually with a double-ended ship at Heriot Bay on Quadra Island.

Fulford and Vesuvius on Salt Spring are also remenants of the the single-ender days when you had ships like the Cy Peck or the Pender Queen calling in there. At least with Vesuvius there is lots of room to make a wide turn into the berth without having to take the time of maneuvering into the berth.
On the topic of Long Harbour terminal though....currently the berth structures are being modified to accomodate the Salish Class. Basically it's in the process of being shortened since the Salish are nearly 23m shorter than the Nanaimo. The trestle is also recieving some TLC as well. Exciting yet somewhat sombre times as we prepare to say goodbye to the dear old 'Nanaimo.

Again for an upcoming sailing trip, is a walk-on ticket from Pender to SWB free? I will be arriving at Pender on the Salish Raven and connecting back onto the Cumberland/Mayne Queen and am curious as to how you must purchase a ticket. The vessel arrives at 1130a and then departs for Victoria at 1205p.

If you are going on route 1 from swartz bay you are better to purchase a throughfare from pender which will cover your travel to Tsawwassen as well.

I am pretty sure you don’t need a boarding pass at Pender! I have boarded the Vancouver ferry there numerous times they never collect boarding passes at Otter Bay for some reason.

They do NOT collect boarding passes for sailings to Victoria from Otter Bay. The ticket booth does give boarding passes for sailings to Tsawwassen, but most of the time the route 9 crew never bothers to collect them... (I’m fairly sure this is always the case, I’ve been to Pender about a dozen times and this is always been the case departing either way)

I don't suppose that I was the only one surprised when it was announced that Gabriola and Quadra were going to get two Island class vessels. Crewing costs and the logistics of accommodating two ferries are somewhat daunting. However, the government and BC Ferries made the decision that terminal expansion to meet future need was also expensive, and- indicative of a new mindset about service- they determined that the communities would be better served by smaller boats on a more frequent schedule.
They need to make the same decision about route six. There has been talk in recent years about major work to expand the Fulford terminal, but it's difficult to see how that would go forward. The route is only 30-35 minutes, but service is only every two hours, partly because of how long it takes to load and unload the 100 car Skeena Queen when things are really busy. Right now they have the Queen of Cumberland, with even more capacity, but in the form of time consuming platform decks.
Two island class vessels, 50 cars each, could give Saltspring service every 45-50 minutes, because of faster loading, effectively raising capacity from that of the Skeena. Maybe they could tweak the vessel design, making them a bit bigger, if need be. Fulford would not be so congested, with cars lined way up the road out of the terminal.
Fulford started out with the Cy Peck, at 18 cars, then the Saltspring Queen at 36, the Bowen Queen at 50, then 75, and now the Skeena Queen at 100 AEQ. I think it's time to re-think the service model on this congested route.

Has anyone seen the new live Fulford Ferry Cam??? The link is here saltspringexchange.com/cams/fulford-terminal/ I sometimes watch it as I like to see the comings and goings at Fulford Harbour. And you can get a view of the ship too in the Berth. If you check out the other cams there is one at Vesuvius too but no ferry view for that one.

I took a look at it, now there is a camera for Fulford Harbor, this will be helpful, also there is a camera for Powell River Terminal as Well.

Would anyone have an update on Route 5 for this Spring & Summer? Will the Salish Heron be on line for May 2022?
It sounds like the Queen of Cumberland will become a spare at that point. What vessel will service Route 5a?
Thank you!

Salish Heron is going to service route 9a when first in service according to the reservation page in May.
