A pusher-tug and barge, at Tofino, in February 2010. The tug is the Sechelt Ranger. Owned by G&N Towing from Powell River.

I did a day of ferry-riding on 8/26/2010, and I saw plenty of working-freight during the day: --------- I saw this ship in morning and also in afternoon at same place, off of the mouth of the north arm of the Fraser (or somewhere near there). I tried to read the ship's name, but it's not clear. - Does anyone have an idea of what this ship is? that pic. off the sandheads mouth of the Fraser is fraser pile & dredge's Fraser Titan. it often lays over at Vito's old shipyard, where the lego queens were pieced together. mr.dot.

Here's a close-up photo of her off Gary Point Park earlier this month: I like this shot of our Fraser's primary dredge unit a lot. Thanks for this, John. Again the burden of navigating through back issues of Western Mariner magazine has stopped me in my tracks, unfortunately. I learned recently - through WM of course - that FRPD's Fraser Titan, the workhorse for giving the Fraser River's South arm a navigable passage, recently had 2 new Mains (Cats, I think) installed. Again, I'll report back if and when I am able to properly sift-through this trail of glossy paper.

Here is some working freight, off of Horseshoe Bay. - I saw this rig at Sewells Marina earlier that morning (Oct 1, 2010), and then I saw it when I was later on the Queen of Capilano. - the trucks had been parked in Sewell's parking lot, and then were driven onto the barge at the beach there.

Mike, Do you think maybe those two trucks might be headed up to Woodfibre? I can't think of any other communities up Howe Sound that are unaccessible by road, except for maybe one logging camp, just south of the midway narrows. If they are headed up to Woodfibre, might they be doing something with the Queen of Vancouver?

So maybe it's heading to a building site on Gambier Island, or Keats Island?

There's another barge company that operates out of Gibsons. www.crosbymarine.ca/barging-tugboat-services.html I've seen them in the Gambier vicinity in the past when I've been leaving Langdale. As Mr Horn suggests, they're probably on a Gambier or Keats run.

Ah. Thanks. Less exciting than my proposal, but much more logical.

For those who like to keep up with shipyard happenings in the news: - we've lost a news source, in Feb.2011. Harbour & Shipping had an extremely low profile in recent years. I didn't even know they were still publishing. I couldn't find a website a couple of years ago when I was wanting to subscribe (still can't find one), and I have no idea where you could purchase a magazine. Good thing we still have Western Mariner, although I'd like them to reflect more the reality of Vancouver being such a major seaport in their content.

I think that I only saw "Harbour & Shipping" as extracts on the Seaspan company website (news section), and maybe as an insert in Western Mariner magazine.

I found a random copy once in a BCF gift shop. That was probably more than a year ago, and I haven't seen it since.

A few different working-vessels in Seymour Narrows / Menzies Bay: - June 2011. ------------------- Inlet Rustler returning towing a boom. - tall mast for the # of lights required to show the load-extent. ----------- Check out this rig sailing up Seymour Narrows - close up of the barge, showing the various vehicles placed like match-box cars atop a box.

A few different working-vessels in Seymour Narrows / Menzies Bay: - June 2011.----------- Check out this rig sailing up Seymour Narrows I saw this same tug/barge in Milbanke Sound in early July, and the comparative timing (day) between that sighting and my June sighting shown above in Seymour Narrows suggests that this is on a regular schedule. The tug is the Western Navigator. She is part of the Western Towboat Company fleet. Their related company "Alaska Marine Lines" has various weekly barge routes from Seattle to Alaska. So that's what I've seen twice this year. www.aml.lynden.com/shipaml/southeast.htmlAnd here's the barge in Milbanke Sound area

Fuel barge & pusher tug operated by K-Sea Transportation Services, registered in Portland Or. I spotted her in Queen Charlotte Strait, off of Port Hardy. - I was on the BC Ferries Queen of Chilliwack in early July 2011. The barge is "DBL 55", and I can't make out the name of the tug.

A freight scene at Port Alberni's waterfront, on a foggy December 4, 2011. - the Port Alberni industrial waterfront seems empty without the familiar sight of the ex Queen of Esquimalt.
