The last few times I have been on the Coastal Celebration's 4pm sailing out of Swartz Bay we have departed and started sailing out the way the Spirit's usually come in but we then turn to port and go towards SSI then turn to starboard and head down past SSI the way the Spirit's go. I know the SOBC both times has been inbound to Swartz Bay on her 3pm sailing but there have been times where we have passed the SOBC on that same sailing. I saw her 8pm sailing tonight too go that different route out of Swartz Bay as I was inbound on the SOBC. I thought maybe they go that way if they are late. Anyone know why??

Coastal Celebration tied at berth 3, Swartz Bay, during its 2016 refit - 21 April 2016. This shot was taken from her sister (& refit replacement), the C. Renaissance. I saw all three Coastal Class vessels on this one trip. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Coastal Celebration southbound in Active Pass (with the Mayne Island shoreline for a backdrop) while en route to Swartz Bay with the 2 PM sailing from Tsawwassen - 24 June 2016. When close enough you can easily tell which direction these big double-enders are heading. In photos taken from a distance sometimes it is not all that easy to tell. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Anyone know why?? depending on how well the ships are keeping schedule, if the Celebration is leaving late and the following )Spirit) sailing is on time, the CC will make an turn to port and cut between Knapp/Pym islands and Portland Island, then pick up the course used by outbound Spirits. If the CC is on time, it will generally leave the regular route.

Jim... From this angle, do you really think the Howe Sound Queen looks worse than this big hulk? Not so long ago saying anything remotely negative about the 'Super C' class boats would get you lynched on this forum. Now Neil, you are suggesting that this angle on the C. celebration is even more hideous than the Crofton-end of the HSQ? The forum's love affair with these 'new age' boats has diminished a little, but not that much!

From a passenger perspective, I will gladly take any Coastal over any other major vessel in the system (and I do think they have good angles, as you have done a great job of capturing, WCK), though I think there's a strong appreciation for the Spirits here (the C's don't get much love). I understand that the Coastals are crew-unfriendly, however, so they are definitely not without fault...

I thought they were ugly from day 1. I think I kept that to myself way back when...

As homely as the Howe Sound Queen is... well, okay... butt ugly... she has a perky little wheelhouse perched right where a wheelhouse should be- on top. That makes up for some of what's going on underneath.
The Coastal photo you posted shows, again, how blocky, harshly angular, and generally ungraceful those boats are. Mike C. is right; they're comfortable to be on, (in a generic office building type way). They work very well from a passenger experience. But I suspect you could build a model of one of these things almost perfectly out of Lego bricks, and if you sawed off the top bumps, there would be no discernible difference. I've never been quite the disciple of Phil Spaulding that some folks are on this forum, but I wonder what he would make of these paragons of uber-efficient German design.

So by that incredible logic, the Baynes Sound Connector IS a real ferry?

Anyone know what's up with the elevators on the CC? One has been out of service for months, and now a second is also closed. There's wooden boards closing off the entry to the one that's been closed for a longer time.

When I was a kid riding the Seven Sisters back in the 60's I don't ever recall elevators being out of service. I assume that it did happen, though.
One major difference back then though was that able bodied people were expected to use the stairs. They used to make PA announcements saying that the elevators were for the 'use of the elderly & infirm'. These days all sorts of people use the elevators who just might benefit from a little stair climbing exercise. Perhaps the elevators now are over used?
Speaking of elevators, I remember the three person operation needed to allow my handicapped daughter Rebecca to go up or down decks on the QPR. Rebecca was in the chair, my wife or son pushed the chair, and I was employed to hold the heavy awkward elevator door open. The elevators now are a fair bit more 'user friendly'.
