Just checked the route 1 schedule for Nov. 25th. The New West will begin her day at Swartz Bay at 10 am. I don't see the point in deadheading, because they still need to bring the full crew complement to Swartz (since Island crews aren't trained on the New West). I don't see why they don't do an 8am out of Tsawwassen. Anyone know why they're not doing this?

She is running in place of the SOVI today out of Swartz Bay according to the Travel Center unless they are wrong, lol!

Since the NW is based in Tsawwassen, she'll have to depart Tsawwassen around 1000 to start her day, and leave SB around 2200 to get home again. I wonder if they'll deadhead on those sailings since they're not listed on the Travel Center?...or carry traffic since they will have a crew on board anyway.

Can the crews at Swartz Bay operate the Queen of New Westminster legally?

The Queen of New Westminster is operating from Swartzy Bay at 10:00 am because of Concerts that are coming to Vancouver those days. Don't know why BC Ferries just do a sailing from Tsawwassen at 8:00 am. Here is a link to why: www.bcferries.com/travel_planning/plan_ahead.html

Can the crews at Swartz Bay operate the Queen of New Westminster legally? Swartz Bay crews are not trained on the New West, so you can rest assured that it will not be operated by them until that occurs. ...but they wouldn't want it because its whistle sounds a major chord, not a high-pitched shriek that most there seem to prefer.

Swartz Bay based crews have operated V-class vessels from the early 1960's right up to a few years ago when the Esquimalt, Saanich & Vancouver were retired. The New Westminster is essentially a V-class vessel and not a lot different than the other V's. It presumably should not require a whole lot of effort on the part of BCFS to 'fam' SWB-based crews on her.

But the Swartz bay crew would have to be trained with the Liferaft Systems Australia slides on the Queen of New Westminster .

Why is there always smoke coming from the New West, even when tied up for long durations such as now? Some sort of generator?
BC Ferries used to lay up vessels in the off season. It seems to me there's enough majors in the fleet they could do this again - given the cost conscious nature of the organization I am surprised they are not doing this again in the post-MLU generation. Maybe it costs more than I think to turn a ship off and protected it for the area's "winter."

Any idea why they're keeping something that isn't used warm?

You could say the same about the mystery-white-sauce chicken in the buffet.

Any idea why they're keeping something that isn't used warm? I imagine it's because there will be less wear on her engines when they are started.

Any idea why they're keeping something that isn't used warm? Best guess is that the process for warming the ship up and starting from a cold state is too long and involved for it to be worth shutting the ship down entirely. Warming the engines up is a long process. On the CG ship I was on, it took approximately 5 hours to get the engines up to acceptable starting levels from cold, and those engines were significantly smaller than the New West's. They were also only shut down without heat for 24 hours. Keeping them more or less ready to start allows them to keep the ship available in the event of a breakdown elsewhere in the system.

Queen of New Westminster pushing into the dock at Berth 1, Tsawwassen yesterday morning. She was waiting for the Queen of Nanaimo to arrive, in order to depart for Sea trials. Divers had been doing a bit of work below the waterline the day before. Queen of New Westminster by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

So it turns out ferry "pans", don't look as nice as bus pans. Nonetheless, here's the QoNW at berth 4 in Tsawwassen last night.
