Queen of Burnaby at 6:45pm on December 29, 2014. - at Comox, BC clear winter evening, and cold... Beautiful pics! Night photography has it's rewards, doesn't it? I certainly enjoyed wandering around downtown Victoria last weekend with my tripod capturing the lights of the city.

Yup, I'm processing a few videos this week.
Here's a compilation of Q'Burnaby items, from a Powell River to Comox trip on Boxing Day 2014.
- arrival of Q'Burnaby at Westview - driving onto the ship - departing Westview - crossing the strait as the Comox land gets closer and closer and closer...

Here's my video of Queen of Burnaby on December 24, 2014: - Arriving at Comox (seen from shore) - Sailing to Powell River (onboard video)
===============
One thing's for sure: when the 'Burnaby is finally retired, I'll have a good library of legacy videos in my YouTube account.

Here's a noon-time ferry jam at Westview, Powell River. The schedule doesn't cause this, this is because the 'Burnaby was a bit late. - seen December 24, 2014 from the edge of Hwy-101 in Powell River

The 'Burn in the fog. - video of Queen of Burnaby's evening departure from Little River, on 2 consecutive nights in early January 2015
Purpose is to see how foggy it was, especially the second clip in the video where she is barely visible.
But the the first clip also gives a good view of how the Burnaby starts her Westview-bound trips by sliding towards starboard, in her Comox corral, instead of just backing straight out. I'm guessing that this is because of the proximity of the beach behind her.
Both clips also show her "Nemetz" departure warning lights in action.

This shot of the 'Burnaby' belies her doom I'm afraid. Too bad BC Ferries couldn't splurge on a couple of cans of white paint. I suppose cost comes before 'image' to the company at this point but be darned if I'd put my name on something that looked like I didn't care about how the world perceives my 'product'.

Does anyone know when the upper solarium deck was torn down from the Burnaby?

Nevermind, it was 2007. Found 2 pictures that were different. One dated 2006 and the other was 2007.

It would be nice if BC Ferries did to their ships like WSF do by applying a gold ribbon on their funnels to denote 50 years of service.

It might be even better if we emulated most European carriers and recognized the importance of marine transit systems by replacing vessels before they become fifty year old rustbuckets... but perhaps I'm just being cranky.

Not really, Neil, but seeing the condition of the Evergreen State last June compared to some of the recent photos of the Queen of Burnaby is shocking to say the least.

:)this 'worn out queen' and all it's onetime sisters served us well, and were a testament to our onetime shipbuilding skills, before the gordo downturn years! mrdot.

All of this may be true but please keep in mind that rust and old age are 2 very different things. I personally like the idea of having the 50 year old gold stripes for BC ferries, but the one problem with that is that BC ferries retirement baseline is 50 years, so the gold stripe symbolization could be 40 or 45 years. By the way legend has it that the Burnaby will be retired along with the Nanaimo in August of 2016. I would need to agree with Neil about the rust issue though.

I think the Coho and the QoNW prove that the old Spauldings could be viable vessels for years to come if maintained properly and upgraded as necessary. The Burnaby looking the way she does is in my opinion a sign of contempt for BC's marine heritage.

The Burnaby looking the way she does is in my opinion a sign of contempt for BC's marine heritage. While I agree with your point of contempt on the Q of Burnaby, the New West is not a viable vessel anymore. Any full load and she's extremely uncomfortable to ride on, especially on route 1 with all the foot passengers. She would be ok on route 30, except she's outgrown by the Alberni and Inspiration. I think the main reason the New West is in such good shape is due to the very limited amount of revenue trips they use her for. Not to mention that 55 million refit that extended her life for 13 years.

I completely agree with Deck Cadet. The New West is an example of poor expenditure management combined with nearly three decades of capital asset neglect / negligence by the governments.
The Coho is a one of that I'm lead to believe isn't actually as in brilliant as shape as is frequently claimed. Not to say the ship is in bad shape, but the dynamics of maintenance, traffic and use are entirely different.

The Queen of Burnaby at Horseshoe Bay in August 1986. I presume she was providing extra capacity on Route 2 during Expo 86? This photo was scanned from a slide purchased on Ebay. MV Queen of Burnaby at Horseshoe Bay by West Coast Photography, on Flickr It looks like she's arriving Horseshoe Bay from Langdale as there's no wakes from the west to see in this photo. If my memory is correct, the QUEEN OF BURNABY and QUEEN OF NEW WESTMINSTER were working together on the HSB-LAN run that summer. I took a ride aboard one of them on that run during that time period in EXPO86 year in Vancouver. That was a fun fair to go to. Wished many of you young forum mates were born earlier to have enjoyed it. SkyTrain was new as well as BC Place Stadium. Lots of transportation things to ride and look at. BCTV and CBC newscasts were done in front of live audiences. And, EXPO ERNIE!

Back in May, the Queen of Burnaby marked 50 Years since her enter into Service. I took a round trip that day to mark the occasion. I'm surprised it took me this long to post this, but life does get in the way I suppose. You'll be pleased to know I wasn't the only one aboard to take note of the anniversary that day, the crew had too. A nice collage which you'll see below with news clippings and pictures from various points in her service life was on display near the Chief Steward's Office. The captain also came over the P.A. and gave a brief history of the vessel. To top off the occasion, the cafeteria was giving out pieces of cake to passengers. (It was delicious of course) Now, onto the pictures! Warning: Photo Heavy! All Photos are © CS16 Photography and may only be used with Permission from the Owner. Here is the collage. Well done on the perfect angle to get all 4 quadrants of the "through the ship" background same-sized. I love walking the beach and stopping when I find that exact spot... - thanks for spotting my photo. I like that they included it. I think it's great that someone who works on the 'Burnaby did a hand-made collage on her. I like that kind of real-person (non-corporate) employee tribute.

Late August in Powell River is blackberry season, and the local brewery puts out a special offering for the Blackberry Festival. BC Ferries also brings out a special ferry just for the season, and then leaves it in place for the rest of the year...
