Could not they move the Queen of Nanaimo to Comox and then run extra route 1 ships for through fares to the Gulf Islands?? Maybe keep one Spirit on standby seeing both are scheduled to be out of service starting Wednesday. That way Island Sky could stay at Saltery Bay and they wouldent need to move the NIP to Saltery Bay. That will not be fun for people using that route. That's it. My ridiculous-suggestion post quota has been reached for today.

That Global report is poor to say the least. They make it sound as if Powell River is being cut off. Clearly it is not. There will still be 4 round trips daily to Comox and capacity should be adequate for this time of year. I am not so sure if the NIP will provide adequate service on the Jervis Inlet route, however. The place that is being hit is Texada Island but even there there will still be four trips daily to get cars on & off the island, plus there will be the passenger only water taxi. To me BC Ferries is making the best of a bad situation.
To top it all off, in less than a year, Powell River will get the first of the shiny new Orca class ships.
Lastly, it is nice that Global credited "Frugal Horn" for his video work. Nevertheless, they should (legally) be:
a) asking first & B) sending a cheque to Mr. Horn

The Queen of Cumberland is out for refit. That impacts capacity on Routes 5 & 5A, meaning that Swartz throughfare is not a good option at this time.

Judging from Curtis' photos, the old girl looks like she is rusting from the inside too.

The Queen of Burnaby is looking good and back on Route 17 So good to see that there was a few bucks in the paint fund to give the old girl one last trip to the 'powder room". If the schedule for the arrival of the 'Salish orca' is still on schedule, the poor old 'Burnaby's' day are indeed numbered.

The Queen of Burnaby is looking good and back on Route 17 IF the transition to Salish Orca goes according to schedule, this would be the last image of Queen of Burnaby in-service in January that we'll see. (well, not counting tomorrow) The countdown is on, with conflicting feelings of nostalgia, relief, anticipation, sadness. I will feel all of that.

When is the Salish Orca supposed to arrive on Route 17 anyways? She is supposed to arrive at end of August 2016, and be in service "by the end of the year." I'm banking on January 17, 2017 for service start at Comox - Powell River.

Perhaps we should consider starting the "Salish Orca 'In Service' Pool" soon considering we've already got some dates I've got a good feeling about November 1st, 2016.

The Burn's certificate expires on 10-31, and training usually takes two months. I would suspect that the Orca will be in service no later than that, unless some unforeseen issues come up and we see more Bowen Queen on route 7.

Did my last trip on her last summer, will do the Nanny this year. Sad to see the last of the stretched-only ships. Fond memories of the Burnaby and Nanaimo on route 2, back in the 70's.

Here's 13 soundings of Robert Swanson's Airchime horns, on board the Queen of Burnaby. ...evidently, 12 wasn't enough. It is funny, I have always loved the horns on these boats. Working on the sister ship, the Nanaimo, I've discovered from veteran crewmembers that there is actually an art to the perfect whistle. Many BCF bridge crews seem to take pride in coaxing the perfect chime out of the ship's horns. There is a lever that produces a sharp sound with all pipes activating together (which seems to have been used in most of the clips you've provided flugelhorn) and which is the easiest way to sound the whistle. I usually use this to make maneuvering signals such as three short when we are backing out of Tsawwassen. However, another way, and by far the most artistic way (if there is such a thing with a ship's whistle), is with a manual pull on the cable from the bridge. If you carefully, slowly, gingerly yank on the wire just right (and believe me, some crews really try) you can activate each horn individually and get the classic tones of the BCF whistle. Just today I had a visiting Officer from another, more modern, ship on board who lamented the lack of such an an iconic whistle on his vessel.
