Queen of Saanich mainland bound just south of Active Pass - spring 2002. A sig-sized version of this photo has been serving as the 'signature' photo for Mr. DOT for awhile, now. This photo originates from film, one of his negatives. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr
Nice photo.

MY FINAL POSTING ON THIS SUBJECT
Unless we hear otherwise, and based on PK's charting and Siitech's slate showing today as the estimated arrival, the CRAIG TRANS should be in Lázaro Cárdenas now with the QUEEN OF SAANICH.
With this, my unofficial date stamp will show October 4, 2012, as the arrival of the tow.
Upon consultation with Scott, this will be my closing post on the "MV QUEEN OF SAANICH move to Lázaro Cárdenas" thread. He will merge this to the normal QUEEN OF SAANICH thread tonight.
Seven of our retired northwest ferries have been sent to breakers in Mexico:
MV ILLAHEE MV KLICKITAT MV NISQUALLY MV QUINAULT
MV QUEEN OF ESQUIMALT MV QUEEN OF VANCOUVER MV QUEEN OF SAANICH
One has ended up in the wrong hands and ended her life in Alang, India:
MV QUEEN OF VICTORIA
One was lost enroute on her regular sailing:
MV QUEEN OF THE NORTH
Three "Pacificats" were placed aboard ships and are in Abu Dhabi:
MV PACIFICAT EXPLORER MV PACIFICAT DISCOVERY MV PACIFICAT VOYAGER
One has taken a long trip across the Pacific and is serving people of the Fiji Islands (with the cleanest heads of all ships there):
MV QUEEN OF PRINCE RUPERT (now MV LOMAIVITI PRINCESS)
There are others that have left our coast. These are the most recent.
Our thanks to the MV QUEEN OF SAANICH for her years of hard work and service attending to the transportation needs of the Salish Sea. Rest in peace and we'll see you in other forms of metal products.
The general discussions of the QUEEN OF SAANICH will continue on the regular thread ...

Thanks to Mr Ferrynut and Mr Keenleyside for their efforts in keeping track of things.
What a long journey. Not a particularly cheerful end, but as far as I'm concerned, much less unpleasant than the slow disintegration of the 'Sidney and others.

Thanks to Mr Ferrynut and Mr Keenleyside for their efforts in keeping track of things. What a long journey. Not a particularly cheerful end, but as far as I'm concerned, much less unpleasant than the slow disintegration of the ' Sidney and others. It's been our pleasure. For Mr Keenleyside, great chart work on your part. Now, we'll turn our attention to our new Olympic-Class ferries as the hulls are rolled out from the assembly building in Seattle and mated to the upperworks built on Whidbey Island, finished in Everett, tested, and begin service here in our part of the Salish Sea. We sadly witnessed endings of several of our beloved ferries and are witnessing new ones being built. Life goes on. Scott can now administer the merging of this tread to the regular QUEEN OF SAANICH thread. It's been bittersweet fun to track this voyage. It's done. The memories of this vessel will live on ...

Adios, Queen of Saanich. Being the only V that I can really consciously remember sailing on, and the last V that I set foot on just a couple months ago, she holds a special place in my heart. She served our people well, and we'll remember her for being the reliable old girl she was.

Seems news worthy to me. It seems according to CTV news the Tug CRAIG TRANS has been detained in Halifax because of poor living conditions for the crew. According to the quick blurb the sailors ran out of food three days ago and where forced to dock due to weather. It was heading to Montreal to pick up a scrap ship and take it down to Mexico.
I was not able to find the Video on CTV and they made no mention that it was the same tug that took the Saanich down to Mexico.

No they didn't say anything about the ship they where going to get. After moving east from BC, I remember looking forward to a trip to the Maritimes and the ferry service to PEI. The first ferry I saw was the Vacationland. I can remember thinking that it was the ugliest ferry I had ever seen. We sailed on another ferry so I can't speak for what the inside was like. That is one ferry I have no feelings of regret that it is going for razer blades.

Very interesting to see that she was still intact in those photos, with not alot of activity going on around her to indicate any impending scrapping.

Queen of Saanich @ Berth 2, Swartz Bay Terminal - winter 2000/2001. A few things to note: There are two ferries mostly hidden behind the Saanich. There is also something sticking out from the hull by the forward 'BC Spirit' logo. Any guesses what that might be? photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr

I was just scrolling through this thread, I realized I had not posted any of the photos of this vessel I took in 2008 just prior to her retirement. I, like many other forum members here, took the oppourtunity to ride on Queen of Saanich just before she was pulled from service. So, bear with me here as I post these long overdue photos: Forward Lounge BCFerries sure missed the boat when they redid her interior circa 1995. The color schemes are awful, those fixed chairs in the forward lounge face sideways are awful, and they left the original seats in the upstair lounge area. What were they thinking? The only positive has to be the acoustical tiles covering up the ceiling.

A photo from the Mr. DOT collection from when the Saanich was new, c1964. The photo credit is to the "Photographic Branch - BC Govt Dept. of Travel Industry". The location is not easy to peg as the photo is tight on the ship, but I believe that it is either in the open Georgia Strait between Tsawwassen & Active Pass, or in Juan de Fuca Strait off Victoria. This is, of course, as she was built, before stretching, before lifting, likely when brand new. The original photo is b&W, btw. First post on the forum.
I worked on the venerable Queen of Saanich from 1986 till her retirement in 2008. In fact I was working on her final day, and final sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay. That was a bittersweet day, and the entire crew were quite sad to see her being finally retired. Know I was.
And took part in her official decommissioning ceremony, which really made it final. Quite a few people were there, including current and former crew members, and know that invitations were sent out to her former crew members, and a number of them did show up. It was a good turnout.
Out of the four V class vessels, the Queen of Saanich was easily in the best shape, with the most upgrades as well. Company recognized that she was in good condition, compared to the other three, and spent the money on her.
But her time had come, and with the brand new Coastal Class vessels arriving, she was gracefully retired, while still capable of a few more years left in her. Just didn't make financial sense to keep sinking the substantial money into her, especially as BCF had already spent the money on a replacement vessel, the Coastal Celebration.
She was a great ship to work on, easily my favourite, and gave 45 years of service. The old girl did have a good run.
Which makes it that much harder to see her in limbo. Basically abandoned, left to rot and rust, and being vandalised. Not a gracious ending for this grand old lady. And wish it had turned out a bit better. Think a quick trip to the scrap yard would have been a better fate.
Anyway, great to see some fans of the Queen of Saanich out there, and the V class in general.
They did serve the people of BC very well, almost from the inception of BC Ferries.
