Here's a pic of a copy of "The Wave" from 2006. Okay, back to the QotI now.

The Dolphin has been rebranded as The Wave, however it is still more or less the same.

Just wanted to let you ferryphiles know what happened to Queen of the Islands. It is no longer a fishing lodge but has been converted into a wedding/party venue and is now permanently anchored on the North Shore of Vancouver. The old girl's been remamed "Spirit of the Nation" in honour of the Squamish Nation, in whose waters we are anchored. It has undergone extensive renovations and is now a wedding/party venue with wraparound views of Vancouver's downtown cityscape, Stanley Park, the Lions Gate bridge, and the North Shore mountains. Info on it can be found at www.celebrationonwater.comAttachments:filename (780.57 KB)

Great to learn that this ferry is being used as a public function formal facility. Best wishes to her new owners!

What AGM? That would mean a new constitution, registration of a society and sending of AGM minutes to the Registar of Societies, election of officers, reporting to the membership, annual audit of finances, etc. etc. I'm not sure if PK is being: - funny, and knows that the "AGM" term was usually very casually. - taking the AGM term literally, when that's not what was intended. Either way, it made me chuckle.

Keeping on with this tangent, help me out here....

Keeping on with this tangent, help me out here.... John H = Chair Person of the Bored ? Frugal Horn = CEO ? Who are the other officers? I'll be the Commissioner. ;D Commissioner Larry J. Norris... Or maybe Thomas R. Smith? No, too stereotypical American. Gregoro V. Kumpf? Naww, too Soviet... I'll just go with Commissioner Keller O. Liefsen.

Note: This post is VERY photo-heavy! Photos of the QotI from last thursday: They're really doing a great job sprucing her up! The oak paneling looks fantastic. I'm happy she's found a good home. From the marina dock: Her car deck, from near the stern. You can see where the original end of the superstructure meets with the newer deck up above. The passageway along the starboard-side car deck tunnel. There is still some old St. John's Fishing Lodge branding on the walls. From the bow. Those glass doors are going to be removed, and the bow section of deck is only going to be accessible to the tenants of the two suites on either side of the front of the car deck. Anchor mechanisms. The forward stairwell. Its upper entry's been covered up, and it is to become a storage area. The only thing that worried me slightly was this water in with what may or may not be the anchor chain. The aft stairwell, from the car deck. Her outside deck (deck 3), from the stern. Same as the last picture, but looking aft. Some of that new oak paneling. Looking towards the ship's starboard side, in the aft section of the lower passenger deck. Looking forward on the starboard side of the lower (main) pax deck. Looking aft on the portside of the main pax deck. The little boy's room. It's being remodeled, along with the rest of the ship. The portside davit. Her upper outside deck with her blue funnel (which I could've sworn until I saw it up close was black ) A perfectly symmetrical view of the funnel. Her galley, looking towards starboard. Her galley, looking towards port. The food stores, located aft of the galley. Her back-up generator, located in her funnel. An electrical panel, located next to her back-up generator. Looking aft from the portside bridge wing. Looking into the wheelhouse. Possibly the last piece of navigational equipment left in the wheelhouse. The telegraph on her starboard bridge wing. Her port bridge wing telegraph, and the port bridge wing, as pictured from Monkey's Island. Monkey's Island, looking towards the starboard. Looking aft from Monkey's Island. Looking towards Monkey's Island from near the funnel. Her airchimes, still in place. The door leading down to her main passenger deck. The stairs back down to her car deck. The coat of arms, laying on the vehicle deck. An old brass bell. Some panels, down in the engine room. Her engine. A plaque on-board. Looking up to her funnel. Looking forward, on her starboard side. The port anchor hanging off her bow. Looking sternwards on her port side. Notice those big supports holding her to the dock. Apparently a few days before I was there, there was a fire down in the engine room which took 35 fire-fighters to put out. I didn't see any apparent fire damage anywhere on-board. Thanks to her work-crews for letting me on-board for the photos

Thanks for that photo essay, CV. Although Queen of The Islands can't really be classed as a significant part of our marine heritage, it's still nice to see one of our old ferries finding a useful retirement, and remaining in the area. I hope her new owners do well in their venture.

:)Is it ever neat to troll thru your photo heavy package and retrace my very steps thru these companionways and stairwells, many years previous, a misfit in the ferries fleet built not long after ferries aquired the old private gulf islands ferries and wac began his heavily subsidysed gulf islands venture, of which this was the first newbuild. She was the only design which went to the German&Milne Montreal design firm, and it was an east coast design with a turntable just forward of the foc'cle as I recall, to help those side loadings at Saturna and other old docks in the early days, was an awkward loading process those days! My memories of cleaning similar stairwells on Q of Sidney, Saanich, and QPR! which was part of seamens detail. Would sure make a neat retirement haunt eh! :)mrdot.

I always loved the panoramic view from the upper passenger lounge on this vessel. She was on the Fulford-Swartz Bay run when we lived on Saltspring in 1978.

:)yes for the last years of BC ferries service she did the short hop from Fulford to Swartz Bay, and she must have been a very expensive ship for this run, but was probably a very good ride for foot passengers and the forward lounge was a must for the Long Hbr. run, not so much for the short hop over to Swartz Bay. She would be coming in on her morning run as we were singleing up on Q. of Sidney for her extra summer service runs during my UVIC days! mrdot.

What awsome picture's. Those supports on her portside are probably there to protect her hull. As she will have to deal with the wash from the seabuses. Queen of the Islands will probably make a good breakwater for the marina. It's interesting she is moored close to where the Seven Sea's resteraunt used to be. Since she is privately owned North Van mayor and council can't meddle in her affairs. And do away with her like they did to the Seven Sea's.

:)story of that mrdot picture is a interesting one, as it was shot just before we singled up for an early morning sailing of Queen of Sidney, on our regular extra sailing, late 1960's, those were my uvic years, and the Q. of the Islands was on one of the early crossings from Fulford hbr. my camera was just a simple kodak which I kept handy for these quick shots, just before starting work!

Here is another fresh scan from an old slide. It shows the Queen of the Islands. The date - 19 August 1972. She was preparing to load for the first sailing of the day. Some of you will figure out where this was taken fairly quickly, but I'd like to let our younger members have a crack at that first. Clicking on the photo will take you to a higher resolution version on Flickr. From the JST Flickr photo site ©

Little River? I'm pretty sure. you can see the beach wrapping around the point through her car deck tunnels.
