Interesting to see that there was a plan for a B/V class vessel for the Gulf Islands. Didn't happen, nor did the second northern vessel. Jim wonders about the 'second' Gulf Island vessel mentioned in the article... wouldn't that have been the Mayne Queen? I believe the Gulf Island vessel Bennett referred to ultimately became a much smaller vessel, the Queen of the Islands. They might have been better off had they opted for a larger vessel because, Neil, as you have pointed out, the QotI was too small right pretty much from day 1. Update: The QotI was being constructed at the same time as the Nanaimo & New West, but not at VMD. Perhaps Bennett already knew the little boat was going to be a misfit. As you probably know the Bennett's had a summer place on SSI. WAC had a vested interest in the place.
The article also seems to refer to a North Coast running mate for what became the QPR, the fabled Queen of Kelsey Bay.
What made BC Ferries cancelled Queen of Kelsey Bay and eighth V/B Class vessel?

The QoTi was launched and in service at the time of this tender call..... perhaps the the extra Victoria class vessel being bid for was what became the Burnaby?? When the Burnaby did enter service in 1965, it allowed the Sidney to operate a summer supplemental service on both route 1 and 9, and were it not for the of the SSQ to the fleet in 1968 making the Sechelt Queen available, the QoTI may have spent more years as the primary route 9 vessel. Even with the sechelt running from Long harbour, the summer 'Sidney schedule as 3rd from from SW withe SGi stops continued to at least 1974.
