:)I don't know exactly when this pic. was snapped, it was in the early arrival of Stena Danica to the ferries in the late 70's and I tromped this area of Deas dock many times during my post ferry working days, and my days in Tsawwassen town planning when side trips down rice mill road were common. As for trips this year, I haven't kept count but I have four on my new gold card! I sure hope they don't recend that like the last 15% rebate farce. :)mrdot.

Photo Courtesy of DOT/JSTJust wanted to point out, that I think I've found out what happened with this float. How cool would it be to have use of this at your leisure. Throw in a little outboard engine, and you're good to go! Alan (Airchime) sent me this video on VHS a few years ago, and I'm now only just getting it digitized online. The quality is awful I realize, but that's what I was given.

That is just brilliant! I am so jealous of this guy. I wonder if he's still in possession of it?

It does sound as though this is one and the same as the scale model on the float shown above. My brother, Mr. DOT, had a hand in building this model. He says that it did end up as a display in a marine-themed pub, which I have reckoned on being a pub known as the 'Wheelhouse' located in Surrey.

Incredible find! If I had a pond large enough in my back yard, I would build something like this. A miniature version of a ferry like the San Francisco Bay STR EUREKA, though. Use pedal power to run the side wheels connected to the walking beam. Make ferry docks on the pond and get radio control cars to board and disembark from my ferryboat. This has got me dreaming!

:)that Queen of Surrey float has a mrdot. connection as the surrey chamber of commerce came to me for help on this model and pat Steven's husbend, the paint forman back then helped us with the paints and the official livery, and I prepared plans, some of which brother wettcoast has scanned, thats the chamber guy sitting by the float at the Surrey open house at fraser/surrey docks. I think the model went to a townline pub. and from there ? check out wettcoasts site for the plan I did for this project, these were during my Delta planning days, shortly after the ferries acquired stena danica, and renamed it as our first Q of Surrey. :)mrdot.

The things that turn up in my slide collection... This is the Queen of the North, at Bear Cove Terminal, Port Hardy. The photo was taken on July 11 th, 1980, during ' the North's first summer serving the Inside Passage route. As usual, clicking on the photo will take you to a much higher resolution version... On this solemn 5th anniversary of our flagship falling, our Queen of the North, I'll be posting some of my captures of the graceful lady before her untimely death. This first volley of captures is from her second-to-last time at Tsawwassen Terminal, after coming down from the north on what was BC Ferries' last public positioning cruise, before heading into the refit just ahead of her sinking... Queen of the North in her dogwood years: Queen of the North and QPR in the early 1980's. Queen of the North in the 1990's. Ever since I first had an interest in BC Ferries, I had always hoped I would one day ride the Queen of the North on the Inside Passage route.

I miss those positional cruises and the Queen of the North. She was a lovely ferry! I have some wonderful memories sailing on her.

What on Earth was the QotI doing at Deas? BCF sold her back in '91! (at least I think it was '91...)

:)these shots posted by retro, and others are very evocative and illumanating works of art, etc. but I will always feel that the indignity she faced in loosing her more pleasing dogwood livery, accompanied her to her watery grave! maybe my framed illustration rests on the seabed with her? :'(mrdot.

I'd say this is the best place to put this. After 5 Years (and a few revisions here and there) I thought I'd pull out a poem I made in school back in Spring 2006 and revise it one more time. The result, I am very pleased with as I hope you all will be. The Sinking of the Queen of the North Sailing the channel, she gives it her all, Invisible between the mountains tall, With a name shining through like glass, On a bell made of beautiful brass. She sailed head-on and into the night, Until all to be seen was interior’s light, Entering a sound she’d silently cruise. Her course unchanged, what was to lose? The ship sailed on to starboard right, As a nearby island came closer in sight, Then striking land, with a painful screech, Ripping like paper, the hull was breached. A mayday relay was soon called down, Inspiring a rescue by a small fishing town, Whom aided the passengers, and to crew, Who thought all escaped, but missing were two. The ship now joins a centuries-old fleet, Sunk to the depths at one-thousand feet, The company left to mourn, but also go forth, and celebrate the life of the Queen of the North. RIP to Our Fallen Flagship - 1969-2006.

What is the bright orange on the top deck behind the windows both for (and aft?) of the funnel? In one picture it was blue.
While we're at it, it very much looks like a modification of the original design (and some of the early pictures bear that out), is that something done by the Swedes, or BC Ferries?

What is the bright orange on the top deck behind the windows both for (and aft?) of the funnel? In one picture it was blue. Located under the mast is the solarium. From what I remember of it, it was quite tight and basically nothing more than a passageway to connect starboard and port sides on Deck 8. The colour of the glass was likely changed on the QotN around the same time the C's solarium glass was changed. It was done sometime in the 90's.

There was basically room for one person to stand and someone could just squeeze by to pass. Because the plexi was slanted the foot room was more than shoulder room. Night time you stood a good chance of running into a couple engaged in activities other than whale watching. And on a very sunny day it was smoking hot (temp. wise) because the arch shape of the solarium preventing much air circulation.
