I do not think I have ever seen a sailing leg cancellation.
Service Notice - Sailing Leg Cancellation - Severe Weather - Vancouver (Tsawwassen) - Southern Gulf Islands
Please be advised that the Queen of Nanaimo has cancelled the following sailing leg due to adverse weather conditions - high winds:
7:20 pm departing Tsawwassen to Galiano Island (Sturdies Bay)
The vessel will proceed directly from Tsawwassen to Village Bay (Mayne Island) and continue as scheduled on to Otter Bay (Pender Island) and Long Harbour (Saltspring Island). www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=944404

I also see the Queen of Nanaimo has cancelled her stop at Galiano due to high winds. She will go directly to Mayne Island. Tell me why is it the Nanaimo cancels the Galiano stop yet the Bowen can still sail to Galiano from Swartz Bay?? oh what that sailing would be the Skeena Queen right now. Still a smaller a ship though although I guess the Bowen and Skeena dont have to turn around off Galiano which could have something to do with it!

Still a smaller a ship though although I guess the Bowen and Skeena dont have to turn around off Galiano which could have something to do with it! You've basically answered your own question. But, with a South East wind, Sturdies Bay is proven to be difficult for the Nanaimo for her to get in and out of. It's not that it can't be done, but it's more like, is it worth the risk going there when it's windy? There's no room for error there and no easy way out if the wind takes her on a different course. I think November 2013 in Village Bay was a good example of a close call situation. The Right Angle Drives on the Bowen/Mayne and especially Skeena offer full maneuverability to compensate for those winds, allowing it some ease of stress for the Captain while making the approach and departure from Sturdies. Many years ago the Queen of Sidney ran aground in Sturdies Bay during a sou-easter. There is a big ledge of sandstone that you do not want to tangle with!

As well as propulsion issues, I suspect it's also a matter of the structure of the 'Nanaimo, basically presenting a great big 'wall' for a southeasterly to blow against as she's manoeuvring in and out of a very exposed Sturdies Bay.

Still a smaller a ship though although I guess the Bowen and Skeena dont have to turn around off Galiano which could have something to do with it! Others have basically answered your question but since I was on the bridge I'll add that the concern was more about departing Sturdies Bay than it was about docking. When the wind is from the East it can pin a conventional ship like the Nanaimo to the floating lead. In order to comfortably clear Burrill Point when backing out the ship has to come off that wall before booting astern. On the stop on the way towards Tsawwassen things were already starting to get a little gnarly in there and after departing we monitored the worsening conditions. The Master made the call to bypass Sturdies Bay before leaving Tsawwassen in order to avoid a risky situation. We had steady winds of 35-40kts both ways across Georgia Strait which meant that it was a pretty easy decision. Given the expert shiphandling that was required to get into some of the other, more favourable, docks tonight (two attempts were required at both Tsawwassen and at Otter Bay on the return) it would be fair to say that Sturdies would have exceeded the safe limitations of the ship. That's in my own, personal opinion anyway.

I was on the Queen of Sidney that day almost fifty years ago when we grounded on that shelf going into Galiano and remember our skipper Dave Walton, who was new to that vessel, was going in way to cautiously for those wind conditions, and that ended our summer relief ship for that season, I got home very late and missed a wedding in Victoria! I remember well that nite! mr.dot.

The SOVI was suppose to be back as the #1 boat today out of Swartz Bay. She did her 7am and 9am sailings this morning but then the Celebration took over at 11am which departed an hour late. The SOVI is not running until the following weekend. Anyone know what's up with that??

Been a while since we've seen those familiar italicized, coloured, large font letters. Guess hwy19man has been listening to his favorite radio station, Traffic AM 730, and drinking lots of espresso.

Both the Queen of Oak Bay and Spirit of Vancouver Island had medical emergencies in the same day... Is that a record?

The SOVI and SOBC are running like 15 mins apart! They are both at Tsawwassen now! I really think they should run the Celebration at 7pm from Swartz Bay then tie up the SOVI at 8:35 when she arrives from Tsawwassen otherwise the 9pm won't depart till 11pm and there already is a 2 sail wait from Tsawwassen!

Are they using the same berth? If they are the BC must be sitting waiting for the SoVI to clear. Would be neat to see. But super inconvenient for travels.

They usually note if there's no decrease in capacity, and therefore nothing to apologize for. Whoever did this notice was particularly lazy... or maybe they just have a computer doing it now. Or, it could have been someone who's very fond of the Kahloke... takes all kinds, in this world.

The Queen of Oak Bay is holding in dock due to mechanical issues. This in itself is unremarkable, except now three C class have gone don mechanically in five days. When it rains, it pours I suppose. Funny how this class is so apt at concurrent mechanical problems.
