The BC Government and by extension, BC Ferries, have been systematically neglecting and showing contempt for the inhabitants and businesses of ferry dependent areas of the BC coast for years. Maybe by showing the flag with their foreign built new showpiece they think people will be fooled into thinking they care about them. Of course, a mere cynic might think it's just more free ( for the governing party) preelection advertising. A shiny new boat powered by natural gas(?) The good news is that it is great experience for the deck crews to get off the "dotted line" and actually sail in different areas of the coast.

I was a bit baffled by some of the dock tests for the Salish Orca. What on earth was the point of calling at Quathiaski Cove? If BC Ferries was just being nice and showing off the new vessel, I get it, but no Salish class vessel will never be on a ten minute route. And aren't all the new docks standard? Don't they have the same characteristics? The one at Shingle Spit is ridiculously big for any vessel that will ever use it... but standardization is the new mantra. Yes, whats next Coastal Renaissance dock testing Descanso Bay. LoL. Seriously though, Salish Raven has a approx 100 AEQ capacity and really if they could consider using the Skeena Queen up there, It would not be out of the whelm of possibility to use her in a Quick fix if needed. Especially if the Raven is tied up at Saltery Bay NIS.

It had been planned at 100, though. Perhaps a source of understandable confusion.

On the subject of the Salish Class being used on small, short routes, am I the only person who is differentianting between a long-term assigment, and a short-term emergency replacement (ie. 1 week while the main ship is broken down and a Salish is the easiest ship to substitute in) ?

Perhaps you're right, in an emergency... but for quite a few years, the Bowen Queen has been placed there when necessary, and I don't think the Bowen is being retired for a while yet.

Does anyone know when BC Ferries will announce the Salish Orca entering service?

Does anyone know when BC Ferries will announce the Salish Orca entering service? I don't know when BC Ferries will announce it, but a CHEK News report from yesterday said that Orca would enter service in "Late April." It also said "Late June" for Eagle entering service.

The Orca is next to the SoVI right now at Tsawwassen. Her Bridge is about five feet above the SoVI! Reading how tall she is was one thing, seeing it is another!

April 2, 2017 Sunday Salish Orca Departed Departure Bay shortly after I posted my last post on this vessel and returned to Tsawwassen. Now as of 1pm April 2 She came back to Departure Bay and is in Berth 1. Not sure if she is tied up or just dock trials. www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/SALISH-ORCA-IMO-9750270-MMSI-316030627See also Departure Bay terminal cam orca.bcferries.com:8080/cc/data/cam2_NAN.jpgCome to think of it, If the vessel is due to enter service this month, I would assume the ship would need to spend some Quality time in Nanaimo so her Comox Based Crew can have easy access to the vessel for training without having to travel all the way to Tsawwassen or Saltery Bay.

Thanks Curtis I got some pics of her in Departure Bay today. I will post tomorrow. I am currently waiting for the Oak Bay to arrive at HB. She is about 55 min late.
I see what everyone means how tall it is.
I also did a return trip to Langdale today, having my first ride on the Island Sky.

We're rapidly running out of April, and the Orca hasn't been out of Tsawwassen at all lately. Rumor has it Transport Canada is the hold up, anyone heard anything interesting?

From the news release for the Raven's departure from Gdansk www.bcferries.com/bcferries/faces/attachments?id=1032210: "Salish Orca, BC Ferries’ first dual-fuel vessel, will be introduced into service next month on the Powell River – Comox route. Salish Eagle, the second Salish Class vessel, will start service on the Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands route in late June. Salish Raven will be introduced in the Southern Gulf Islands in the fall." So it seems the start date for the Orca has officially slipped again... We should have started a pool...

Old news, but on Monday I was at Tsawwassen and got this side-by-side picture with the SALISH ORCA and the QUEEN OF ALBERNI. The ALBERNI is 32 meters longer, which isn't obvious in this photo.
