This might be buried deep in this forum somewhere, but didn't Esquimalt & Saanich have a greater stated vehicle capacity than Victoria & Vancouver? Larger platform decks? I assumed this meant they were the typical #1 & #2 except for off-season maintenance until 1993. Yes, the Esquimalt & Saanich had (after the 'lifting' operation) complete hoistable ramps installed on the main car deck and could, in theory, carry 400 cars if all three decks were stacked tightly. The Victoria had no main car deck hoistable ramp of any sort, and the Vancouver had a partial one. Prior to 'lifting' all four of these vessels had 'platform decks' reached by hoistable ramps. They were exactly the same as what was still in use on the Nanaimo & Burnaby at the time they were retired. Those hoistable ramps were probably a questionable investment in that I don't think they ever got a lot of use. They slowed down loading 'big time', and they left little room for overheights. When the New Westminster was 'lifted' it was not fitted with any hoistable ramps on the main car deck, and the upper car deck was given greater clearance then on the others so that there was plenty of room for overheights to be carried by her. I do not believe BC Ferries ever operated the Esquimalt & Saanich as #1 vessels in the manner that Spirits have been since being introduced in 1993/4. Besides which I believe those two vessels were Swartz Bay based, while the Vancouver & Victoria were Tsawwassen based.

Were the major vessels on route 1 and 2 ever interchanged up until Cowichan Class? Where the Victoria Class operated interchangeably in off peak season except for maintenance period like Queen of Victoria would operate on certain days while Queen of Vancouver would operate on other the days? How did BC Ferries Queen of Vancouver and Queen of Saanich on route 1 when the Spirit where introduced?

How did BC Ferries Queen of Vancouver and Queen of Saanich on route 1 when the Spirit where introduced? Queen of Saanich had an interior refresh and some changes to dining around the time the Spirits entered service, so it was almost always the #3 vessel.

Dining changes came a little later, apparently, when Saanich received the White Spot to match the Spirits. archive.news.gov.bc.ca/releases/archive/pre2001/2001/4606.asp

Queen of Burnaby (+Mayne Queen and Quadra Queen II) at Deas, today. There are now some new white things at the bow of Queen of Burnaby Could be a wave breaker on the bow. That would signify a move is forthcoming, someplace that requires an ocean journey. My guess would be Mexico, or some other location for ship breaking.

I wonder if it would be moved to a location that give us access to the interior of the ship. I forget which, the Queen of Saanich or Vancouver (or both) were moved beside a local island and people were able to just pull up on a boat and climb the ladder.

If that is indeed a wave breaker on the bow (it sure looks like it is) it signifies that an ocean voyage will soon take place. Not going to be parked somewhere up in Howe Sound. Its destination is probably not Fiji, but somewhere else that requires an ocean voyage.

You can actually see the "Queen of Burnaby" text reemerging. Pretty neat how the old BC Flag and the modern blue text are both reemerging, even though they are from different times. It's history is coming back one last time.

There is a hole cut into the bow doors, perhaps they are just covering it with those tarps? Although I don't know why they'd need to do that unless there will in fact be an ocean voyage.

Is the scaffolding new? I think it is new. The floating one on the side wasn’t there last time I went to Deas.

Why would they need scaffolding inside?

Maybe it could be to reinforce the bow doors? Or it could just be the interior walls.

Queen of Burnaby, Bowen Queen, Mayne Queen, and Tachek at Deas Dock, today.
Nothing much seems to have changed since the last time I saw Deas Dock but Queen of Burnaby's bow is not visible from this angle.

You're at that scruffy little beach at the west end of Deas Park, right? From there, the bow of the ' Burnaby has always been visible, so she must have been moved forward for some reason. Also, I couldn't see the Bowen/Mayne very well when I was there a couple of weeks ago, so that's another move, I think.

I was actually at the end of the "South Arm Marshes Wildlife Management Area" just to the west of Deas Island yesterday that has a slightly different angle. The previous photo with the Burnaby is from that beach at Deas Jungle, which I think is the same as now.

Would they do a in house scrap operation I wonder because of that crane. It appears to me that the crane is working on a piling/dolphin repair at the entrance to the basin. There was a really old/rickety dolphin there earlier this year when I was there last. Nice to see it finally be upgraded since that's the deep side of the entrance.

Can someone possibly send a update picture of the queen of Burnaby? Why? I was at Deas Park a couple of weeks ago, and the ' Burnaby looked just as she has for the last several years. More rust... but what else are you expecting to see?
