Snow really isn't my "thing". I usually don't have any good grip on the ground with my feet... Chris, my advice to you is to get a pair of hiking shoes with really deep treads on them. That's what I was wearing on the Tsawwassen trip, and they actually stopped me from falling a couple of times when I started to slip (on the stairs). Although they made it hard to get out of the seats in the cafeteria, because the treads of my shoes kept catching on chair rims. They're also really good in snow and wet stuff, but I always still have to walk carefully on ice, because that's the only place they have no traction.

Fortumately I had my YakTrax in my backpack in case I needed them. I'm thinking of buying some YakTrax, for everyday winter walking mainly. Are you happy with yours, Mr. San Mateo? Any advice on different models or uses?

Got plenty of snow here on the Penninsula, up to 13 cm outside of town forcing my school district to cancel at 5:30 a.m. in the morning. Gotta love the white stuff.

We got about 20-25 cm on the north shore this morning. Closed all the public schools. I'm in midterm exam break right now so my S.S. exam got postponed.

Snow day for me as well unfortunately. We have about 6 inches of interior champagne powder on top of the 6 inches we recieved on Saturday. It's about -10 degrees celcius on my back deck right now, with a bit of an Northern Outflow really starting to pick up. I'm also watching people go down my street on snowmobiles. I guess that's their method of transport today, seeming the ploughs won't bother with the city streets, until the Sea to Sky is completely bare.

We have rain and 8C in Toronto. Then we swap with you and get cold again tonight and some snow. All this bouncing around of the weather is crazy. No wonder everyone is getting sick. Huge winds for tonight.

I'm off for the interior tomorrow morning for a week. Work for 2 days, Big White for 3 days, and concluding with Revelstoke for 2 days. A whole lot of snow is in my long range forecast. There will be lots of forum reading to do upon my return to the wet coast.

at baldface lodge today, rode 50cm of fresh snow. avalanche risk was high in the alpine so we stayed below the tree line. had bluebird and 15cm yesterday at whitewater and 30cm and low clouds on sunday. skiing has been great but avlanche danger has kept us out of some of the alpine areas. got some good pics of us cliff hucking the last couple of days.

Just got back from Grouse and it was pretty epic. Skies cleared up just as I put on my skis and the snow was really powdery, much like the stuff in the interior. I ended up skiing down a number of blacks and double blacks and even hitting a jump that some people had built.

Fun day in the snow for me. Got out to my car to go to work and found that a plow truck has almost buried it. At work we find out that we are not going out to Richmond because the SRY put an engine on the ground on the approach to the Fraser River Bridge(from the Westminster Quay side), blocking our line. They sent us to Sapperton/Fraser Mills to pick up a train from CP Rail. Having to dig out every single switch in Sapperton it took us 10 hours to go from the King Edward crossing in Coquitlam to Thornton yard in Surrey.

Thought I would share a couple of pics from my week in the interior. I'm not much of a photographer on the mountain, as I tend to ride the chairs, followed by pointing my board downhill! 4 of my 5 days were powder days, and when that's what you head up the hill for, the old saying goes: 'There are no friends (or photographers) on a powder day!' Big White on Sunday: The new Revelstoke Mountain (at least with chairlifts) on Tuesday: 40 cm fell in Revelstoke that day! Driving home this morning. This was taken in 3 Valley Gap, which is just west of Revelstoke. And the snow keeps falling, as the roads are presently covered outside my place on the North Shore.

I seem to be very picky when it comes to snow conditions. Monday on Revvy was hard packed for the most part, but we managed to find some fresh turns after a few runs and trying to figure out where the good places to go are. Yesterday was crazy. . .started snowing at 6am, 15cm by 10am, and another 20cm on my truck at 3pm.
The town of Revelstoke is pretty good. I stayed at a friend's place so I can't speak for how the accommodations are in town. People already recognize the mountain on the map, as I was told that there were 1,200 people up on the mountain on Saturday. They only have 2 lifts now, with more in the works. The vertical compares to Whistler, so if you go below the upper chair you're in for a long run to the bottom. Revelstoke gets an unbelievable amount of snowfall each year. My friend's lawn has over 6 feet on it right now! If you are an advanced skier/rider and you like powder, this is definitely a mountain to check out! Even better. . .combine it with Kicking Horse in Golden or Whitewater in Nelson (that's for you, Kyle!) and you're almost guaranteed a great ski trip.

drools... That looks amazing...
Coastal Skier needs to get off the coast and to the interior for some skiing. Ok so the conditions are pretty sweet on the mountain that towers over my house. Grouse just lacks the size and the vertical. I'll have to get to Revelstoke very soon because it sounds pretty dope.

Wow! Incredible amount of snow up there. Just to give you an idea of how much snow is really up there, those are the tips of 50-75 foot trees sticking out the snow. Those aren't little bushes set as obstacles along the course of the ski hill.
Jeez, it's snowing here again as well. I really missed seeing it, after the half day or rain we've recieved. It feels like months since I've seen the lawn. Actually, come to think of it, it has been nearly 2 months since I've seen the lawn.

Well, as an addition to nickfro's post above, I thought I'd add some photos I took last Sunday when I went on an early morning trip to Mt. Washington. Looking southeast from the top of Sunrise North from the top of the Boomerang looking toward Campbell River and Quadra Island An awesome view heading down the mountain There wasn't too much new snow, but enough to make it fun. The weather just couldn't be beat though. And a base of 420cm (that's 13.5 feet!) doesn't hurt either. It was so clear you could see the 'Burnaby going back and forth from Comox to Westview. Unfortunately I didn't have my zoom lens on at the time so I couldn't get any photos. More photos on my fotopic site.

heh... I know all about the snow on Mt. Washington... I just got back from a snowshoe trip in to one of my transmitter sites on that hill today. This set of pics was from 2 weeks ago, so just imagine them with another 2 feet of snow on top of them.. Trying to find our road and pull out: Not safe to park on the side of the road! Found the stop sign! Gods I hate snow... Finally at the site. Notice my partner is standing on the roof of one of the buildings. The little buildings are actually rooftop doors with ladders that allow you to descend inside the building. Oh ya, this is what the place looks like without the snow.. This cable tray is 10 feet tall Our building has now snow ladder, but the hot air exhaust keeps a hole clear around the door. Just have to dig a staircase down! Looking out the front door

Revy as of next season when the gondola goes down another 800ft will have more vertical then whistler. we have been having good days at whitewater this week. staying out of the backcountry as the avalanche risk is high right now. had a scare on saturday on some easy slopes with avalanche conditions so will wait for it to get better. taking thursday off and going to baldface for friday and saturday. helps that i know one of the owners so the cost is not that bad.
