Hey there sccommuter, I have a copy, that is in very good condition,-spine not broken) of Peter Favelle's book, 'The Queens of British Columbia`-1974, that I may be willing to part with but the price won`t be cheap ;D as it contains 4 special pictures of `my second home`- The Queen of Prince Rupert`. The book is an original printing and I`ve had it for 35 years. There have been other prices quoted on this thread, just wondering what your offer might be Cheers Starsteward - Vancouver, B.C.

Hi, the research I've been doing on BC Ferries over the last five years is finally complete and the book is finally out. Anyone who is interested can get here: www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415883078/ or through amazon or similar online retailers. Bookstores in the region will carry it too, but it might reach them a little bit later. It's a hypermedia book. If you read the normal version you'll find little difference. But if you read the e-book version you'll be able to navigate lots of web-based material, which can be found here: ferrytales.innovativeethnographies.net/ On that website you'll also find a few of the pictures you contributed to the project (thank you!). And in the first chapter of the book you'll find fragments of the discussion board conversation on the sinking of the Queen of the North. I hope you will be interested, and that you'll enjoy it.

It said it could be a 1 or 2 month wait, but I'm patient. - price was $32.50 for the paperback.

I'm currently reading through a booklet by Norman Hacking called "The Two Barneys". It's a story of father-and-son Captains Bernard Johnson.
So far, I've learned that the senior Capt. Johnson mastered some Union steamships as well as GTP's Prince Rupert.
A simple and short history book that makes me appreciate Mr. Hacking for his work.

:)when I was young, Norman Hacking was one of the premier ship historians in this province and unlike me, to my knowledge, never muddied the waters with dumb, or unthought- out commentary. :-Xmrdot.

I'm thankful that Phil took the time to write it for a mixed crowd, meaning that there are lots of definitions and explanations for the various ethnography items that he refers to.

I am having trouble ordering online. If someone sees a copy in Vancouver proper or the North Shore could you please post or PM the location. Will ask a parent to pick it up for me.
Cheers

Today while killing some time for work, I managed to sneak into a couple of bookstores in Sidney just out of curiousity to see if there's anything worth buying. First I went to Galleon Books on 3rd st, and only found a lonely mint condition copy of the "Dogwood Fleet" for 9 dollars. I left it there. Next I went over to the Haunted Bookshop, and that place was a bit of a Goldmine. I came out with a mint condition copy of "The Queens of British Columbia". I already have a copy of that one, but it was getting a little worn out, because I've had it since I was about 10 years old. Plus it was only 5 bucks. I might be willing to part with the worn out book if anyone is seriously interested in it. I also came out with a copy of "A Legend on Puget Sound Ferryboats". This is a thick hard cover book that was published in 1983, and they were asking 25 dollars for it. I'm a little excited to read this one actually. Finally, just for acknowledgements sake, there are two copies of the "Ships of British Columbia" still on the shelf there. One is a hard cover and the other is a soft cover, and they're asking 15 and 10 dollars for those.

I really enjoyed "A legend on Puget Sound - Ferryboats". Not knowing anything (or very little) about the ferries in the area before I read this, I found it interesting learning about another companies history that is so colored. Enjoy!

I received Adrian Raeside's "No Sailing Wait" book as a birthday gift, and I really enjoyed it. It was a quick "90-minute read", and some of that was at Swartz Bay on Friday. Each of the 126 pages has a cartoon, along with a few words from Adrian describing the news-story or happening which motivated the cartoon. ps: you'll never find that book for-sale in the BCFerries Passages Gift Shop.

A few examples from the Raeside book. I like this for its wit For this one, I like how he uses a retro simple berth style and how the ship is old-minor in style, with hull-sides similar to old Pender Queen.

I just picked up that great "No Sailing Wait" book at Munro's in Victoria this week. Great read for the low price!
Unfortunately the high fares kept me from discretionary ferry travel. A shame. As a result I've missed out on seeing some of my favorite book stores on this trip bike.

Two from Washington state, picked up from Serendipity Books, in Friday Harbor. When I was in there, a customer was expounding to the proprietor on how much she loved her Kindle. It seemed to me the proprietor was trying to be polite in return. Crossings is a book for those who simply could never see enough photos of the Seattle- Bainbridge route. 300 pages of photo essay, with some text, all on that crossing. Nicely done, though. The second is a modest work of 72 pages, black and white, with plenty of shots of the SEs, the Hiyu, Evergreen State, and others.

That Nautical Highways book looks like it would definitely be worth a look. You can never have too many photos of the Steel Electrics and Evergreen State class. I think I need to get a copy of the Raeside book as well, although I'm already jaded enough with cynical humour.
Just for the record, there is a copy of "The Ships of BC" in the Bookman in Chilliwack (softcover in good condition), as well as a copy of the Langlois, W. J. (Ed.). "Navigating the Coast, A History of the Union Steamship Company". Sound Heritage, Volume VI, No. 2. Aural History, Provincial Archives of British Columbia. Victoria, 1977

I just received my copy of 'No Sailing Waits' in the mail, and I ordered a copy of Ferry Tales from Indigo, which is apparently processing now. Here's to some nights of good reading!

My wife and I seem to have a tradition of buying books when on vacation, from museum and park gift-shops. We did that again this year, as well as ending our trip with a stop in Sidney BC (Beacon Books, and The Haunted Bookshop).
Here is what we bought. Marine titles first, and then the rest (I'm talking liberties with this topic, but it's all books, so that's ok). -----------------------
"MV International", by Chris Morrison & Ray Djuff. - short booklet about the Waterton Lake day-excursion ship.
"Carving the Western Path: Routes to Remember", by RG Harvey. - this is part of a series by Mr. Harvey, the former BC Deputy Minister of Highways. This volume includes a 28-page chapter on the inland ferries.
"Ships of Mercy", by Don Stephens. - the story of mercy ships. We have a forum member on Salt Spring Island who used to be part of this organization.
"Stern-wheelers and Steam Tugs" by the great Robert D. Turner. - hardcover copy from The Haunted Bookstore.
"San Francisco Bay Ferryboats" by George H. Harlan. - I'll be reading about some Puget Sound ships in this book.
"Ferryboats on the Columbia River - including the bridges and dams", by Robert H. Ruby and John A. Brown. - a 1974 work by Superior Publishing, a great name for these types of books.
---------------------
And the rail books:
"Canadian Pacific: Stand Fast, Craigellachie!", by Greg McDonnell - lots of photos in this recent book.
"All Aboard for Glacier - The Great Northern Railway and Glacier National Park", by C.W. Guthrie. - lots of GNR memorabilia photos in this book. Purchased from the gift-shop at Logan Pass.
"Famous Name Trains - Travelling in Style with the CPR", by David Laurence Jones. - Lots of CPR memorabilia photos in this book.
"Carving the Western Path: by River, Rail and Road through BC's Southern Interior". By RG Harvey. - another book by the former Deputy Minister of Highways.
-------------------------
A couple of travel books:
"Going-to-the-Sun Road", by C.W. Guthrie. - a short book on that fabulous highway in northwest Montana in Glacier National Park. I drove it and I loved it.
"High on a Windy Hill - the Story of the Prince of Wales Hotel". by Ray Djuff. - I took enough photos of this hotel building, so I figured I should buy the book and read about it. - This book, plus 3 others earlier in this post, are all concerning Mr. Hill's Empire Building in the northwest Montana and southwest Alberta area.
Oh, and I bought one more book, today at Beacon Books in Sidney BC: - "Nicholas Morant's Canada". I think that he is my photographer hero.

"Canadian Pacific: Stand Fast, Craigellachie!", by Greg McDonnell - lots of photos in this recent book. I remember buying that book at Costco many years ago. One of very few transport books I've seen being sold there. I have a few of his books, "Rites of Passage", "Passing Trains" and "The History of Canadian Railroads" are my favorites.
