Just a quick fluff and buff refit. She had her 10 Year drydock last year. There will be a rare sighting of the Coastal Celebration in Nanaimo for 3 weeks starting Monday. Is she coming in to Departure Bay for maintenance? The Queen of Coquitlam is docked here this morning, ready to head over to the Duke Point run.

Well.... That didn't go as planned. She will be leaving later today for Swartz Bay due to the Surrey "incident".

I don't see the Coastal Celebration on the schedule for today, but she has left Departure Bay and is on her way south in the Strait. The crane barge is still here next to berth 1.

The Bowen Queen is now running on Route 5a as of this afternoon. She has been in lay up since the end of summer so this ought to be a good run for her to blow out all the cobwebs, so to speak.
The Mayne Queen has traded spots with the Bowen, and she is now tied up at Fulford Harbour, Berth 2

Good questions, Neil. I’m not exactly sure of the reason behind the switch, but I’d imagine maintenance is once of the driving factors behind it all. I’m not sure if refit is really applicable in this case, due to it being such a quick sideline. However typically when the Bowen covers for the Mayne, they will typically staff the Bowen at the same staffing level as the Mayne Queen. This would mean no snack bar in that case, unfortunately.

I assume the Mayne Queen is going for refit. I remember riding the Bowen around this time one year while the Mayne Queen was in refit. It would be awesome if they would switch the Cumberland and run her in place on the Mayne Queen while the Mayne is out then put a Salish on route 5 again. The only comfortable ship they have on route 5 is the Cumberland. Honestly I try to avoid the Mayne Queen at all costs. With route 5 and 5a being multiple ports and sometimes 2+ hours on those boats on some sailings it would really be nice to have food service on the ships even like a limited Cafe serving a few meals would be nice.

It was sometime in the '90s, I believe, when they shut down the Mayne's snack bar. I guess the '5A' route they had her on didn't provide the traffic to justify the expense.

Northern Sea Wolf is loose! She's off SGI accompanied by SMIT Pride. Doing over 14kts so she's under her own power.

There was some movement overnight to prepare for the weekend, with the continued out-of-service period for the Spirit of British Columbia and the Coastal Celebration still in refit. The Queen of Coquitlam left Departure Bay at 4 am (with a rather rude series of toots) to move down to Duke Point. The Coastal Inspiration moved down to Swartz Bay. Hopefully no ships have trouble this weekend.

Northern Sea Wolf is off Gabriola and heading north @ 14kts... She's passing by Departure Bay now, on her way north for testing and "viewing opportunities". Northern Sea Wolf Viewing Opportunities Central Coast terminals and Port Hardy - May 5-9, 2019 BC Ferries’ newest addition to the fleet, the Northern Sea Wolf, will be sailing to Central Coast terminals and Port Hardy in the May 5 to 9 period, with opportunities for public to come on board and see the vessel. The Northern Sea Wolf is preparing to assume the Central Coast Connector service later this month and the new Port Hardy-Bella Coola direct summer service on June 3. Final preparations include testing the fit of the vessel with the dock structures, and while there, the crew will welcome the public to on board as time permits. Viewing opportunities at the five terminals it will serve are as follows: • Sunday, May 5: Bella Coola; 10 am to 11 am • Sunday, May 5: Ocean Falls; 5 pm to 6 pm • Monday, May 6: Shearwater; 3 pm to 4 pm • Tuesday, May 7: Bella Bella; 10 am to 11 am • Thursday, May 9: Port Hardy; 2 pm to 3 pm Additionally, formal welcome ceremonies and open houses are being planned for Bella Coola on June 2 and Port Hardy on June 3, as the Northern Sea Wolf officially begins the new direct service route between these communities. BC Ferries will release more details closer to these dates.

Northern Sea Wolf is off Gabriola and heading north @ 14kts... Unfortunately for me, she is heading up between Lasqueti and Texada, which is going to put her a long way out from Hornby. Think I'll head over to Helliwell in a while anyway, just to catch my first glimpse of her at sea. EDIT- Well, so much for that idea. I misjudged how quickly she would get past Lasqueti, so she was a ways past the closest view... and anyway, she was so far over toward Texada that most of her hull was swallowed by the curvature of the earth. Even if the view had been better, Neil the ace photographer had a dead camera battery.

The Coastal Renaissance came in to Departure Bay a little after 1 am and is now tied up at berth 1. The Coastal Celebration is back in service this morning.
The Coastal Renaissance is off the schedule until May 22, when she starts on the Duke Point run. At that point the Coastal Inspiration goes off the schedule, returning to service on June 15.
The Coastal Renaissance is then off the schedule again until June 20, when she starts Departure Bay service for the summer.
I assume we may have the Coastal Inspiration here for a few weeks for maintenance. We'll find out on Wednesday!

Bowen Queen currently stopping in at Buckley Bay, before her summer assignment at Alert Bay. Supposedly, the Quadra Queen II will be hanging out at Buckley this summer.

There have been a couple of interesting sights at Buckley Bay lately. The Bowen Queen arrived two or three weeks ago, and according to a crewman on the cable ferry, the Quadra Queen II arrived later yesterday or perhaps overnight. Apparently, she'll be sitting there all summer, taunting travellers spending six or seven hours getting to or from Hornby. Or maybe BC Ferries will astonish us, and occasionally, when their traffic records predict, crew her and send her around Boyle Point to spend eight hours or so helping disperse four sailing waits to and from Gravelly Bay. One can dream.

The Queen of Coquitlam has left the dry dock, done some circles in Howe Sound, paid a visit to Horseshoe Bay and is now tied up at Langdale
