STATEN ISLAND FERRY FIRE
A fire broke out in the engine room of the Staten Island ferry SANDY GROUND on Thursday, December 22, 2022.
The vessel had departed Whitehall Street at 5 PM. Twenty minutes later the crew became aware of a fire in the engine room. The room was sealed and the CO2 fire suppression system was activated. The fire was contained but the ship became to fill with smoke and passengers where directed to the upper deck where there are outside promenades. The captain anchored the boat and put out a call for assistance. Vessels of the Coast Guard, Police Department and the Fire Department quickly responded .
It was decided that the safest course of action was to transfer the 800 plus passengers to other vessels. Two large tugboats helped secure the ferry while the New York Waterways boat FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT took off about 600 people. A NYC Ferry vessel took off the rest. The SANDY GROUND was then towed to Saint George. There were only a few minor injuries thanks to the quick and professional response of the crew and the rescue vessels.
I will post more details as they become available.
