These two babies link the town of Levis with downtown Quebec City. As you can see they hold cars as well as passengers. The docks are set up for side-loading only. The run itself takes about 10 minutes each way across the Saint - Lawerence River. It usually takes about 20 minutes to unload/load. They are scheduled to leave both sides at the same time, but in this photo the sailing left Levis a little late! These photos were shot in October, 2005.

I saw those ferries in 1995 when I was in Quebec City. Do they run in the winter as well? I think the river freezes up in the dead of winter, although there are icebreakers all over the place as well.
Are they free?

Hi John,
I never thought to ask if they ran all year round. There's a bit of a language barrier that far east!
I know they're not free because I saw ticket booths at the terminal. I don't know how much because I didn't have a chance to ride them.
Sorry I couldn't help you more.
Alan

I was aboard one of those two when I was ten or so, on a trip to see the francaphone corner my fine country, and remember them crossing the river in the dead of winter; I'm assuming that they're light-ice-breakers, the same as the Sunshine Coast Queen (former Vacationland) from her days on Lake Michigan. I fondly remember the ice-canoe races.. yes, ice; groups of people raced canoes across the river, following the same route as the ferries. My view-point was from aboard one of those two same ferries. The ice races were part of the Winter Carnival, which is a celebration of winter that goes on every year in Quebec City. Fract: Quebec's equivalent to our Legislature is called the "National Assembly"; this is announced to all vehicle travellers to the capital by large road signs. here's the link to their website: www.traversiers.gouv.qc.ca/trav/quebec/index.asp

I saw them run in February this year. One crosses the river well upstream of the other and there was ice on the river.

I guess I never noticed this thread much, but I took a ride on them in July 2007. They're pretty nice boats. I enjoyed the ride and the Scenery. Funny Enough I was able to take a bunch of Photos of her on a low-dead battery life. Here's a Picture of Myself in front of the Alphonse-Desjardins After I rode her...

Okay, no photos, yet, but while googling around the islands north east of Quebec, QC, I noticed a ferry route indicated. I think this is the correct link CTMA Ferry

I had forgotten all about his ferry. I know someone who took it from Montreal on the summer cruise and she said it was good. Not being a shippy type she wasn't very forthcoming further. She flew the return journey from where ever she disembarked. I think with the Olympics coming BC Ferries could run a number of these short duration/day cruises and sell a good number of tickets.

And another in Montreal. This might be the ship on the route I noticed, too. Not too sure... ...here's a link with a bunch of ferry links.

You know what I noticed is the tinypics doesn't produce the "correct" usage for the proboard forum url inline code when you upload video. That will teach me to check my links. Let me know if you still can't open the videos; they worked for me, but... Oui, c'était le temps de Bonhomme Carnaval. Pourquoi d'autre voyageriez-vous à Québec en hiver? ;D Le terrain de la glace et de la neige! Brrr! lol, actually I would go back in winter anytime. I think to truly appreciate the city and how beautiful it is, you must experience it in winter. I'll post a few general shots when I get home tonight.

Okay, I finally got around to loading a few photos from Quebec not related directly to the ferry. Now, did I mention we had a bit of snow there? I think the ice sculptures were one of the coolest things we saw in the old city. There are quite a few murals depicting the history of the city on the building in lower city. This is just one of them. A very good restaurant. Many thanks to pnwtraveler for the recommendation. The famous ice castle built for the Carnaval. It's life expectancy is not long...apparently it is torn down shortly after the end of Carnaval. Where is the bus? Well, I'm not sure, the schedule says it comes here. With all that snow in the way, how do we know it's coming? Well, I'll stand out here where the snow doesn't get in my way!

I leaving to go to Ottawa on Friday to visit a friend and then on Saturday we are driving out to Quebec City to see some of the sights. We will probably be taking these ferries across the river a few times to get back and forth. It looks like a nice trip across the river with great views. Hopefully the weather will be good!

Try going at dusk Karl. You catch the city both in the sun and then when the lights come on. Makes for great pics if you have somewhere to steady your camera and do a time exposure.
When you are inside the old city try Au Petit Coin de Bretagne just inside the St. Jean gate on Rue St. Jean. Great crepes done in the large square Bretagne style. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are other locations including in Ste. Foy in the Place du la Cite Shopping Mall and on Grand Allee just outside the old city gates.

Take the time to stop for some crepes at Au Petit Coin de Bretagne, and I would recommend dinner at Aux Anciens Canadiens (pictured above). If you have a car, Ile d'Orleans and the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency are very worthwhile. Northern Exploration can give you an extensive list to augment this one that will likely leave you looking for additional time to even partially complete it! ;D Edit...to avoid confusion, standardized some names with NE's post

I am back in Ottawa after spending a night in Quebec City. We got to take the ferry over from Levis to Quebec and then we came back on an evening trip across the river. I must say Quebec City is really nice and the views from the ferry are great. I am really suprised how nice those ferries are inside seeing the length of the trip is 10mins. I took numerous photos which I will post when after I get home tommorrow!

Ok here are some photos from my trip on these ferries. I dident notice till now that the two ships are a bit different. The one we took both ways has the enlosed bow where as the other one dosent and it looks like the other one could offload vehicles from the bow in addtion to the loading on each side. This is the Raddison the one we never took Onboard the Alphonse-Desjardins Cars go around the stern a model of the ship onboard The ships passing seen from the Quebec side View from the hill above The Levis terminal Looking across from the Levis side The crossing only takes 10 mins but it seems your onboard for quite a while before they depart. Some night shots coming back from the Quebec side The other one was tied up for the night It was a fun trip!
