If it is, it would be interesting to see. I should go down there and get some pics and video of it, if/when it happens.

Seeing how last Saturday's civic elections swayed the GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District) board to the right, and our already right-of-atilla-the-hun so-called "Liberal" provincial government, I'm sure our efforts will definitely not be helped by those who should be first to help.

I'll see if I can't get one of my dad's professional cameras to document it (he's an instructor teaching television/video production at BCIT).

Now, what does this crane look like? Colour? Type of teeth? Take a pic of it and show it to us.

It has to be pretty strong and thick itself to cut through solid steel. I doubt that is what the crane is for.

Lets all charter the Tsawwassen on the scrap date and say one last goodbye to the Queen of Sidney. Acutally I dont know how many of us would want to see that though. It would be a really SAD sight to see!

This idea is completely off the rocket but I might as well say it. Drive the cars onto her one last time filming it all…(in a ceremony of type) then ride as she floats to her death in Surrey. Then Ceremoniously drive off, remove the ramps and give the order (or if someone could even press the button etc) to drive the first claw into her rip her to shreds. Even go as far as have an over-night/party and even be standing on her upper deck (funnel) as the big teeth do a few ceremonious gutting of her (we have to safely get off) also during the ceremony power would be but one last time and a few other things. Also we would need camera's to film form all angles for driving on, deapture, crane coming down etc. Another way (for safety and drama) is to have us on top as she is being crushed and then have a long armed bucket for us to get into as the final farewell and solute is done. Thinking along the funeral lines another way to do the teeth digging in is have on shore (or on ship) set up seats, put up a podeum and have people who the Sidney touched speak about her and then maybe carry one last item off (a box to symbelize a coffen) and then instead of saying "Lower it" trumpets blow, 21 one horn solute and then the teeeth dig in.
Copied from chat so hope it all makes sense.

How are they going to scrap this ferry anyway? I didn't know they would use a "claw" or a type of paper shredder, or in this case a steel shredder that will perfectly shred the Sidney up, and be done in an hour.... sarcastically speaking of course...... But I would assume they would get a bunch a people with cutting torches, and cutting sections of the steel. Not shredding the whole ship all in one go....... But I hate to crap on your idea Mac, but it's pretty exagerated, and I don't think they would let us do that. But don't get me wrong though, as nice as it would be to do that, it would be nearly impossible to be able to orgainize...just in my opinion though.

Your right Chris. Mac exagerated a little too much. It takes months to plan something like that and we have less than 2 months until shes scrapped.

Quite Right, we have about 2 months, maybe she will not be scrapped, it might be for the SS San Mateo instead, anyway, I might be able to call in the BCF Squad to save her, I'll find out after school.

I'm no expert, but I'm still skeptical about this 'tearing her up in one go' idea; I would think that if this was the case, she would have to be completely gutted to do so, let alone having to deal with all the fluids and asbestos, and all of this by January. What's your source, Mac?

I almost can´t imagine it is easy like that, unless you do have an even more careless policy to scrap ships than they have in India. I mean, right it can´t be so that they put a crane there and do it the same way as they do with old houses ?
I would think first of getting a special company that is providing that any health-hazardous materials such as asbestos, oil etc. are removed from the ship in the suitable way. Then the interior must be taken out of course, too and I am sure some of the ship´s parts will find use onboard another ship (Coho, any need of spare parts ??). Then, I am sure they will take everything apart very carefully - don´t forget the ship-scrapping business is actually a recycling business, so I suggest they will look carefully what can be re-used and crane used to lift off parts and load them on trucks etc.
Which leads to one question here - are there any companies in Canada, specialized on scrapping ships ? Perhaps some who are in connection with companies who sell spare parts of ships as well, I can imagine anyone who does think he/she knows anything should perhaps investigate there.

I think this is all a joke...seriously, how do you dig through solid structural steel with thick frames with a backhoe bucket-style device? It sounds really dumb to me...it reminds me of something you'd see at a mining pit, not to scrap ships.
