Has there been in movement on the new Pattullo Bridge? Which one would get replace first the George Massey Tunnel or the Pattullo Bridge? I think the Patullo Bridge should be the first one replace because their has been so many crashes on the bridge.

In memory of the late Stompin' Tom Connors, here is a song about the Second Narrows bridge collapse.

This is one of my favourite bridges. It's called the Seal Island Bridge, and it carries the TCH over part of the Bras D'or lake, about 30 km from the North Sydney Marine Atlantic ferry terminal. I love the swooping steel curves and the arch of the deck. [/URL]

For safety reasons because the lanes are well narrow. You mean they reduce the number of lanes and make the open lanes wider?

They close the center lane in both directions so people do not cross the center line to try and prevent head on collisions that we had. The lanes are re opened every morning for rush hour. At the time they started the night lane closures they also reduced the speed limit to 50Kph from 60.

Good use of tax payers money? Not really, could be used for the replacement bridge. Video about the seismic upgrades for the Pattullo bridge.

Good use of tax payers money? Not really, could be used for the replacement bridge. Video about the seismic upgrades for the Pattullo bridge. Why not: they did the exact same thing with the Port Mann. Seismic upgrades were done in 2001, and extended the bridge life by just over 10 years. Could they do the same thing with the Pattullo Bridge? Probably? Is 10 years of bridge life really worth $150? That's probably pretty cheap when it's only pennies compared to know construction costs in the billions. My only concern is that I fall into the highly exclusive camp that fears the loss of the Puttulo Bridge will leave Vancouver with barely any remaining highway structures that can be considered the true landmarks. Really only the Burrard Street and Lions Gate bridges would be left as true, unique landmarks bridges. The Alex Fraser was an engineering landmark when first built, but now the cable stayed concept has become so widespread that it is hard to really say why one cable stayed bridge is more of a landmark than another especially if we eventually will have three of them within a short stretch of the same river.

Another, reason is the narrow lanes on Pattullo which causes lots of death compared the wider lanes on the Port Mann Bridge.

They could probably widen the lanes if they cantilevered the sidewalks outside the bridge structure, like on the Lion's Gate, but that is another bundle of money just for the engineering studies.

Something I have always thought would be a good temporary solution is a conversion to an alternating-three-lane system with lane controls, very similar to the Lions Gate Bridge.

I agree with that idea, Mike C. I see TransLink doing that one day in the near future.

Since when is there a toll bridge on HWY 1??? The toll is on the Port Mann Bridge, and it has been in place for about nine months.

Well it was just a bit of a suprise cause my g/f and I were at the PNE Saturday and we choose a hotel in Langley cause our regular hotel or any hotel around YVR was booked so we stayed in Langley but I thought oh yeah we will take highway 1 from the PNE to highway 15 to highway 10 but oh we dident know there was a toll on the Port Mann so we exited to go a different way cause we had a GPS but that dident help cause it wanted us to go back onto highway 1. We ended up in Port Coquitlam then just decided to take the Golden Ears bridge and that way out to Langley. If it wasent for the highway being backed up at 11pm we would of probably stayed on highway 1. Still took us an hour to get there and still had to or will have to pay the toll. After a long day at the PNE I was about to lose it, lol! I think it is stupid as highway 1 is the major highway out to hope and the interior and we have to pay a toll now. I dont care that much as I usually never go hwy 1 from Vancouver anyways.
