Roberts Bank/Deltaport A close-up of the Maersk Line cargo ship. If anybody knows the type of flower this is, please speak up. It's in a flower pot at Tsawwassen Terminal. A self-dumping log barge, full of dumpables. A goat on the roof at Coombs market. Based out of Campbell River, the CCGS Point Race attends all marine emergencies in the area. Bates Pass, a little boat moored in Heriot Bay The Heriot Bay Inn was built in 1895. That makes it 115 years old! At whaletown Scenery around Whaletown. That's Quadra Island in the background. a branch Another branch. The Susan Laverne It was a sunny day. This isn't retro, this is ANCIENT! I'll try to keep that in mind tonight while I'm eating that fresh sockeye salmon in the oven right now.... Another self dumping log barge. This dumbarse zipped in front of the PRQ three times, just for the fun of it.... CCGS Point Henry, also stationed at Campbell River. A candle. I had a cross-screen filter on my lens while taking this. The road up Mount Washington. An alpine flower. Another alpine flower I hiked from the parking lot all the way to the top. The trail was invisible, and it was this steep, pretty much the whole hour-and-a-half long hike. Snow! Paintbrush. Comox Valley Purple flowers Nearing the top The chalet from the top. Another view of the Comox Valley Campbell River. The village, with the lodge on the lower left. The beach at Little River

If anybody knows the type of flower this is, please speak up. It's in a flower pot at Tsawwassen Terminal. It's a lily. Without seeing more of the plant I couldn't tell you for sure what kind of lily, but given what I am seeing in the background I'd wager it was a daylily of some kind. (Which isn't a true lily, but that's a different story completely.)

Rogers Arena and Downtown Vancouver: #1: BC Place is still BC Place. GM Place is what the yuppies call 'Rogers Arena', or the 'phone booth', or the 'video-rental store' #2: To me, it's always be 'The Garage'/GM Place. That will never change.

Agreed Luke, I'm also having a hard time adjusting to GM Place being called "Rogers Arena." I just put the name above the photo because that's what it is, but if I were to talk to you about GM Place face to face, I would always say GM Place

I feel no loyalty to either brand name. To me, Rogers Arena sounds better and is a better description of what it actually is.

I feel no loyalty to either brand name. To me, Rogers Arena sounds better and is a better description of what it actually is. I think Rogers Arena makes it sound like a tiny little local arena, like Pitt Meadows' Twin Rinks Arena. If it were Rogers Place, that would be nice, but the name 'arena' makes it sound small and insignificant.

Like "the phone booth" or "the call center" or "the connection center." They just don't sound suited for hockey. Also, people often confuse Rogers ARENA with Rogers CENTER in Toronto. Interesting to see how fans will react to the change during the 10/11 NHL season.

Best nickname I've heard for Rogers Arena is The Cell. But for now, I'll always remember this 'Arena' as GM Place/The Garage. Besides, I'm sure many Jays/Argos fans still call their 'Centre' the SkyDome. (IMO, it should be Rogers SkyDome) Doesn't matter what it's called though if the Canucks can win games there.
It also makes me wonder if there was a deal saying Rogers gets the Arena naming rights if they broadcast Canucks PPV games on their new Sportsnet One Channel.

It also makes me wonder if there was a deal saying Rogers gets the Arena naming rights if they broadcast Canucks PPV games on their new Sportsnet One Channel. The Rogers Skydome is simply called the Dome by locals. The Air Canada Centre is called the Hangar for obvious reasons. This naming thing gets confusing as naming rights have become quite expensive and the more you pay the longer you get your name there. Things often used to be named to honor someone, or as an inducement to for a significant donation. The assumption was for life. Now more often than not they are named after a corporate entity or donor, but have expiry dates written in the contract. As you may or may not know (or care ) Toronto is the third largest theatre centre outside of NYC and London. The theatre that was called the O'Keefe Centre for a long long time, changed to the Humingbird Centre for the Performing Arts, and is now the Sony Centre. What was the Pantages Theatre (historical) keeps changing and is now the Canon Theatre. The Mirvish family has resisted so far and we still have the Royal Alexandria and Princess of Wales Theatres. I know the renaming thing also happens in other centres too. I was quite pleased when Fairmont took over the landmark railways hotels, they had to compromise on naming in many cases. The Royal York Hotel had to be kept prominantly named, and a la bill 101 even the font sizes between Fairmont and Royal York were dictated by the city. Hotels that are owned by an investment group can abruptly change management companies so the branding changes. The Pinnacle Delta Hotel on West Hastings, where I used to stay, became the Marriott Pinnacle. The Toronto Howard Johnston, became the Delta Airport, and in short succession became the Renaissance, and now is a Sheraton. The last two at least are Starwood Members so it doesn't screw up your points programs .

Those lifeboats are where people get their lifeboat training, and possibly man-overboard drills, when they are training to be working on a vessel.

Here are the rest of my photos, starting with some from the Burrard Dry Dock: They finished restoring the old crane. The crane from the pier Atessa, the yacht of Dennis Washington His personal chopper Somebody name all the equipment on this mast from top to bottom. A seaplane throwing up some spray as it takes off. The Radiance of the Seas is hiding in the back there. Some more dry dock cranes This always makes me laugh. They're telling you that nobody is allowed on the roof, but then they're also telling you that if you want to go on the roof, they'll let you if you call the number BC Place is full of cranes. Make a guess as to where I'm standing. Science World, formerly Expo Center. Can someone identify the breed of this huge thing? A little houseboat city in the Fraser River just West of Derby Reach. That's all the photos.

The next few are some important ships, featured in the styling on the Marine Building: I was curious about the spelling of the name of Drake's ship. I've always seen it as "Hinde". So I checked online, and saw a few comments that the "Hind" spelling is a modernization of the traditional "Hinde" spelling. It's interesting that the tallest mountain on Vancouver Island has the same name, and its is spelled "Hinde".

A couple questions for you Ferrydude and one for whoever knows.
Did you stay at the Tin Wis in Tofino? If so are the rooms still clean and well looked after? Did you see in the Longhouse/Meeting facility? I had heard they had augmented the Longhouse. I had stayed there once when everywhere else was full and was quite pleased.
Maybe someone knows, but I was told that there was going to be pullout and commemoration/memorial built at the location of the Peace Camp, that was the main base for the Clayoquot Sound protests. It was along Highway 4 not far from the Kennedy River Bridge where everyone was arrested. I remember stopping at the camp on the way to Tofino one summer before the mass arrests took place. I haven't heard anything about this and can't see any information online about it. I think the person who told me, perhaps misheard someone expressing a wish.

I was at Tin Wis in Feb 2010, and they were in the process of updating their guest rooms and renovating the restaurant. - I will be there again in October, and I'll see what's new. The Tla-o-qui-Aht 1st Nation band office is also on that TinWis property. Regarding the black-hole area where the 1993 protests were, I haven't seen or heard anything about a commemoration. I track the Tofino local news regularly, and I've never heard of this initiative.
