The high winds forced Ruby to anchor at Royal Roads upon arrival in Victoria from Vancouver. They will attempt to get her in about 04:00 in the morning. All life boats must be off loaded prior to going into the dry dock. The large docking tug, Seaspan Eagle has come over from Roberts Bank/Deltaport to assist in getting her into the dry dock.
At 03:00 Seaspan Foam and Cates #4 towed Queen of Cumberland out of Esquimalt harbor; out of harms way in the event the Ruby got loose from her tugs. (remember the incident two years ago that saw a fish processing vessel break loose and ram a naval frigate) The Foam kept the Cumberland off Royal Roads at about 3 knots until Ruby was safely in the dry dock. Cates 4 and Cates 20 then assisted the Foam in bringing Cumberland back along side.
A busy night on the Victoria waterfront for the Seaspan fleet.

Finally got around to looking at the 2016 cruise schedule forwarded to me for Vancouver. The usual ships making their appearances as per usual. Noticed some (to me) new comers. (I've only been in the loop with cruise ship industry for 5 years mind you). Some ships that stuck out were Le Soleal docking for a full turn throughout the season, which upon further research is the sister to the L'Austral. The HAL Nieuw Amsterdam, and the Seven Seas Mariner from Seven Seas as well. Those ships will be making regular appearances this upcoming season. Sorry if some have known this before hand. I'm still trying to get my bearings on this stuff as I work with the land tourism aspect with the ships.

The Ruby Princess is in Vancouver right now after arriving today from the Esquimalt Drydock. She leaves tomorrow on a 3 night Pacific Coastal Cruise down to Los Angeles. Then she sails to Hawaii! I posted a webcam shot to my facebook page. I dont think there has even been a cruise ship this late in the year in Vancouver that was actually leaving on a actual cruise. This is pretty much the last ship until April!

Not really sure where to put this but does anyone know where the Brotchie (Sea) Navigational Beacon is??? When it says on the Pacific Pilotage page a certain time is that the time from that location to for example Ogden Point?? For like a cruise ship arriving? I know when the Wave Venture departed to Royal Roads Anchor as she does every weekend she left at 11:30am which is the time it said on the site.

There is a traffic separation bouy off the Victoria waterfront; about 6 foot high and orange in colour and is visible from Dallas Rd and the breakwater. Inbound deep sea vessels stay to the east and south the marker, out bounds normally north and west of the marker. It is the VH bouy and is located about 2 miles off shore near Brotchie Ledge. The pilot boarding area is 3 miles south of the marker and is within the inbound traffic lane. The times listed on the Pilotage website for inbound vessels is the time the ship's master or agent has booked for pilot boarding. The pilot boat typically leaves 15 minutes before that time, or when the vessel is 3 miles south of the pilot boarding area. For outbound vessels the time on the website is again pilot boarding time but at the various docks and anchorages on the coast. So yes, the 1130 time for Wave Venture or the cruise ships at Ogden Pt is when the pilot must board with the vessel sailing very soon after that.

The limiting factor for cruise ship size for Alaskan cruise ships sailing from Vancouver is their air draft. Lions Gate Bridge and the power lines at Seymour Narrows are the issue. At present the tallest ships using Vancouver on a regular basis are the third series of Princess Grand class vessels (Crown and Ruby last season, and Emerald next season) and Celebrity Solstice. Solstice must fold down her mast and even then only a few tides a year are suitable. Explorer of the Seas is too high so her sailings are limited to Seattle departures. The final statistics on Norwegian Bliss are not out, but we assume she too will not clear the obstacles.

The one good thing about Seattle,San Fransisco or any west coast USA departures is most stop in Victoria, Nanaimo or some other Canadian port before they go to Alaska...good advantage for the smaller ports for sure!

At the expense of other highlights through the Inside Passage and in Alaska for the guests.

Thank you for posting this link. Great views of the ship in the floating dry dock. This "new" drydock in Portland could spell bad news for Victoria Shipyards. Grand's refit was scheduled for Victoria but with this dry dock now in service, they lost the work. Will they loose more? Star Princess is booked for next fall/winter and it will be interesting to see where she ends up. That dry dock was built for servicing Soviet aircraft carriers over on the east coast of Russia, and was sold off when a newer one was completed, being towed across to Portland. For cruise ships, Victoria is one day farther sailing from California, in each direction, and those extra 2 days allow much more work to be completed. Competition is not always a good thing!

Thanks for the background on that drydock. Didn't know it came from Russia. FYI - Star Princess drydock has been rescheduled from Oct 17 to Dec 17. I don't know if the location where the drydock will be performed has also changed.

The first repositioning of the season, though it'll still be about a month for the Alaska season to get underway.

There does not seem to be very much new this season. 2 vessels that have not been in our waters are Eurodam with Holland America and Emerald Princess. Eurodam is a slightly altered VISTA class and identical to Nieuw Amsterdam that was here last year. Emerald is replacing Crown, and is the 3rd generation of that class of ship, a sister to Ruby. It is the next two seasons that will bring new cruise lines and ships. Norwegian is bring the Bliss to Seattle and thus Victoria, and will be the largest ship in the Alaska market. New visitors will be Azamara, Fred Olsen, Viking and Cunard. I think it is Queen Elizabeth that will be calling after crossing the North Pacific on her way the Panama canal. She too is a VISTA class but with a strengthened hull for Atlantic crossings.
