So... what to do for route 3 for the summer. Well, there is the possibility of two three route schedule for one of the ships. They could also cancel route 40 and put the Queen of Chilliwack on as a relief ship, or bring the Island Sky down and leave the Chilliwack on Jervis Inlet for the summer. Should have kept at least one V around for at least one more season, i guess, although that still doesn't solve the problem of when they will ever build another ship, even if only an intermediate one, so this may end up being a seasonal summer problem. Again, especially as the C's get older and not maintained properly without regular crews, then get pressed into service and presto! instant gear issues. It will be an interesting summer for scheduling. Never mind about the retro C class vessels, things will be a mess if a Spirit or a Coastal breaks down!

Finally! Someone agrees with me. They only needed to give one of the V's a major upgrade like that of the QoNW. Then they wouldn't need to build a new ship for at least another 15 years.

Have all the Vs been sold?
Besides RE-building the engines what else would need to be done to a V to make her a good fill-in vessel?

Somehow change Transport Canada's regulations to allow them to carry passengers again.

Somehow change Transport Canada's regulations to allow them to carry passengers again. I believe I had forgotten about the TC aspect of it, as well as the fact that if one of the V's had been kept and put into an extensive refit, it would still be there next October.

I hate to be a wet blanket (actually that's not true... I get a kind of sadistic, un-fanlike pleasure in being a wet blanket) but any talk about re-engining or TC regulations is rather moot.
There is no money to keep a major vessel in reserve. BC Ferries gets a set subsidy from the province, and they received the okay to finance replacement of existing vessels, and no more. They are obliged to maintain certain service levels, but if a vessel goes out for repair, they can get a temporary waiver, as they did after the 'North sank. They don't have discretionary funds sitting around, and there is no way in today's economic climate that the province would okay a huge expenditure to revive a dead V.
Although, maybe they could apply to the feds, since they seem to have endless funds available to finance an international bun toss, not to mention that Muskoka-fantasy play pen for reporters covering it. But I don't want to rile Mr. Keenlyside by getting political.

Just did another round trip on route 3 and the Coquitlam is no longer turning end-for-end upon departing HSB. The crew told me they worked on her over night for a few nights and got her fixed.
