Yes, well while I was on the Queen of Coquitlam last year when the vessel was on the Langdale run, we departed with one car alarm going off. We pulled in with 5. All on the upper deck. Domino effect: one alarm goes off, then another, then another...

that reminds me of the "symphony of car alarms" on the Bowen Queen on our Galiano Trip back in July. The captain even came over the PA and told people to turn off the alarms.

With my car, I just lock the door with the power lock button on the inside of the door, when I don't want to activate the alarm. So if I want the alarm activated, I just lock the doors with the keyless remote. So BMW's really don't have this option? I know I won't ever leave my alarm activated, my alarm is very sensitive, and will go off if someone gets too close to it. For that generation of cars the closest in some word I won't attempt to spell mode, which sadly will not reduce the chance of the alarm going off because of ferry vibration. It is possible to staright out turn the alarm off, but most owners likely don't know this.

One of my best ferry rides was sitting in my dad's van on the middle deck of the Queen of Oak Bay or Queen of Cowichan. We had a spot right next to a "window" (those spots are getting rare these days) and I had an excellent view with the warm summer air blowing right into the car. Reclining seats, not much noise... it was pretty good!
I rarely take a car to the Island these days, but if I get a good spot, I don't mind sitting there for part of the trip. I don't think I've ever sat in the car for a whole trip though.
A while ago I heard some comments from David Hahn about forcing passengers out of their cars in the future because of terrorist concerns or because of Transport Canada regulations changing because of terrorist concerns.

Making people go up to the pax deck is not a smart idea, instead, you could have some of the deckhands go around the cardeck at a certain amount of intervals instead of forcing everyone on the passenger deck just to make sure you are under surveillance. Who is going to force people out of their cars? Will they just stop loading and make the people disembark each time a sailing happens? That would be even worse what they do here in the states. On the major routes, there is no point since most are upstairs cause it is such a long voyage but on the minor routes. They don't even have security cameras on the minors do they?
This is another case of overreaction to terrorism. It is a threat but do we have to make it to a point that no one can be trusted?
